Cleveland Browns:
- "What would it cost to move up in draft for RG3?" (FS Ohio) - This topic should be familiar to you. You can expect to see even more of it throughout the next several weeks and up until the draft actually takes place. Pat McManamon seems to think the only way to get RG3 is by trading up. I don't think it's as certain, but McManamon makes a good case for it.
- "Browns: Free agency first look" (AFC North Blog) - This is a small piece that looks at the Browns own free agents. It discusses those that need to stay, such as D'Qwell Jackson, and those that are likely to go, such as Peyton Hillis. I still really hope the latter turns out to be wrong, but it seems inevitable.
- "Browns in position to get Robert Griffin III, but may have to trade up" (Sporting News) - This is basically the same topic as the first link. Only here it's by Russ Lande and offered in video format.
- "The Remote Report: Looking At an Offensive Cleveland Browns Offense" (Dawg Pound Daily) - Redundant titles aside... Okay, it's not really redundant, just a play on words. Merriam-Webster offers one definition for "offensive" as "giving painful or unpleasant sensations." Yeah, that's the one. In all seriousness, this is an interesting look back at the Browns offense with some bits of looking forward.
NFL:

"Offseason road maps for all teams" (SI) - This is a really good column that takes a look at all 32 teams and their needs that they should address in the offseason. Spoiler alert: Jeff Diamond lists the Browns' needs as QB, RB, and WR. Personally, I'd cross off RB by resigning Hillis (as unlikely as that seems now), then try to fill a need at LB or DE.

"Ranking the NFL’s announce teams" (SI) - This is another really good one at SI.com. I've expressed my opinion about most announcing crews in the past. In a nutshell, I'm not really fond of most of them. That said, it's fun to see them all ranked in order like this. It's a shame they didn't create one more ranking below "practice squad" just for Jim Mora Jr.

"Offseason promises to be wild" (ESPN) - Yeah, this is more about the offseason. But, this one also pertains to the Browns. John Clayton received a question about the Browns in his mailbag. You'd never guess the topic. That is, unless you'd guess RG3 and the prospect of trading up. Clayton, too, doesn't think RG3 will fall to No. 4.

"Steelers cut Bryant McFadden, Arnaz Battle" (PFT) - This doesn't come as much of a surprise. The move will save the Steelers "roughly $3.5 million" against the cap but they still have a ways to go.

I’ve heard a lot of people say Washington is a definite possibility for Peyton Manning’s landing spot. If that happens, I like our chances of landing RG3 at #4. I just see a major drop-off in talent after pick #5, and I think that St. Louis trading down to #7 is even a stretch. I think unless St. Louis can draft Blackmon, Kalil, or Claiborne at the spot they trade into then they won’t trade. IMO those are the sure-things (or as close as you can get in the draft), and they will be gone by pick #5. If I am the Rams then I want someone I can be reasonably sure will be an impact player right off the bat, and I just don’t think there are many of those kinds of players past the Bucs pick.

This is more or less what I hope happens. Taking the Redskins out of the running by them picking up Manning or Flynn at least lowers the price of moving up if we are still worried about the Phins moving up by removing an irrational buyer from the field.
And I’m totally fine if we package year’s first if that’s what it takes if we can keep the 22nd this year. I mean we’re winning the Super Bowl next year, right? The 32nd pick is nothing more than a glorified second rounder.

I’d love to see Flynn to Washington and Manning to Miami. (Or the other way around). Lessen the market for that trade up.

Agreed. That is basically our perfect possible future, assuming the FO is sold on RG3. May not even need to trade up at all in that scenario.

That would be awesome. Most likely our biggest threat would be Seattle. I would be nervous of them moving up in a trade with Minnesota, (less the Rams since they’re in the same division) so you would still have to consider a trade with the Rams, but it wouldn’t cost less.

Rats. I forgot about Seattle. Well, it they were dumb enough to believe that Tavaris Jackson was a clear upgrade over Matt Hasslebeck, maybe we can interest them in a used Jason Campbell or Kyle Orton, or a shiny new Tannhill instead.

I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if Miami goes after Flynn. If anyone knows whether Flynn can be a legit starter, it’s the OC of the Packers that took the Miami HC job (Philbin, I think)

that’s assuming Peyton comes back from his 3rd neck surgery….from my personal experience, fusions take a year or more to heal, but nerve damage is something else altogether.. then there are adhesions to consider (scar tissue). You are never the same after a fusion..I’m concerned that he had to have three procedures in 18 months…don’t get me wrong, I hope he plays again…

Ouch – more than both our first rounders for RGIII. Oh well – that is the price of poker – if Heckert and Holmgren love RGIII you just cannot sit on your hands and wait. You have to make the deal.
I remember when we were picking a few picks ahead of the Steelers and we needed a FS just like today. It looked like Troy Polamaulu would fall right into our laps – then Pitt trades up and jumps up while we sat on our hands. They overpaid to the value chart – not sure they care.

I just don’t see the trade from either Miami or Washington, both need more than QB’s so I see them sitting & going after FA QB’s because the price will be too high. Flynn probably follows his OFF coach to Miami (As head coach), that leaves Manning when he’s cut. I can see Washington pay dearly for Manning when he hits the market, then they’ll cut off some payroll beef & fill it with their draft picks.

I’m still not sold on RG3… If we deft him, what makes you think he is going to do so much better with what we have? Colt had had a year and a half to work with and people are already giving up on him. Holmgren said himself that it takes 4 to 5 years to really develop a QB, we keep giving McCoy the reigns, get a solid o-line, a solid receiving core, and we’re good. McCoy can do it…. I feel that a lot of RG3 fans will be dissappointed on draft day when they see we pass on him.

Apart from fan sentiment, is there anything to indicate that HH&S want to do another year with Colt McCoy? My own feelings are mixed not because I believe that McCoy will develop into another Drew Brees, but rather because I would like to get two all-Pro caliber players from the first round and I would hate to spend both picks on RGIII. But, as luck would have it, it’s not my call to make. Although they are both surely fallible humans, HH&S are neither stupid nor reckless. If, after doing all that they will do and seeing all that they will see, they decide that they want to build a team around RGIII, I will put my ‘told you so’ in a box under my bed for the next three years and start getting excited to see how the kid plays.

One reason Colt gets a short leash around here is because he was a 3rd rounder. The fact of the matter is that those guys are usually not very good. A first round QB will get more chances than a guy like Colt.

And that is very understandable.. But after 1 1/2 years? That’s kind of ridiculous. I just don’t see it. And as mentioned above, it isn’t our call to make, and we’ll learn to deal with whatever happens anyway

The other part of it is that when you see a franchise QB even in his first couple of years, he may not win a lot of games and he may throw INTs but you also see a lot of things that tell you he’ll be good. Things like throwing in rhythm, with power, good footwork and pocket presence, and ability to see the field somewhat. Colt really didn’t show any of that. He looked either confused or worse, scared to throw the ball. When he finally did, it often had bad results. Usually when he threw on time he had good results but he needed the guy to have completely beat his receiver before releasing it and that just won’t happen very often in the NFL.

Don’t worry, once free agency starts there will be people complaining about how we didn’t do anything in free agency and Holmgren doesn’t want to win vs. people who believe that the right path is mostly through the draft. I wouldn’t mind grabbing a DeSean Jackson and a Mario Williams in FA, add RG3 and a RT in the draft and boom! Super Bowl.

I think we will be more active, but I don’t think this FO will ever go nuts.Probably more along the lines of Fujita, Watson, etc. Now we were in on Eric Weddle last season, but the money got stupid. Thankfully our FO was smart enough to realize that and got out.
Spending smartly is more important than spending.

Well, from the games I watched, he seemed to be afraid to pull the trigger and was a bit skittish in the pocket. ..good quarterbacks make those tough throws, even when a receiver is covered. Both sides of this debate have valid points to consider. If we could get Luck, would your argument to stay with Colt be any different? :)

For the FAs I would like to see us keep Hillis, Jackson, Patterson, Adams (as depth at least), and Dawson for sure.
From the OL bodies I suppose that Greco would be good to keep for depth. Not sure about Vallos.
Maynard seemed decent for a punter, but he’s never had a 68 yard run on a fake, so there’s that.
I was hoping for 2011 to see if Benard would fit well in our 4-3, but not sure if it’s worth resigning him to find out in 2012.
