In need of a new defensive backs coach after Jerome Henderson left for Dallas, the Cleveland Browns hired Tim Hauck as the team's new defensive backs coach on Monday. As is the case with most coaching hires, he already has some times to the current front office.
It actually wasn't that long ago that Hauck was a player himself. Hauck was a safety, entering the league in 1990 as a member of the New England Patriots. His final season came in 2002 as a member of the San Francisco 49ers. He had a stint with the Packers for three years while Mike Holmgren and Dick Jauron were both on the coaching staff. Hauck was also with the Eagles for three years, and although Pat Shurmur was an offensive guy, he was on the coaching staff at the time. Hauck left Philadelphia one year before current Browns cornerback Sheldon Brown was drafted.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer talks about Hauck's recent endeavours as a coach:
Hauck most recently was assistant secondary coach of the Titans under Jeff Fisher in 2009-10. Prior to that, he spent five years as a college assistant at his alma mater, Montana (2004-07), and at UCLA (2008).
I'm assuming that Hauck was out of football last year after the removal of Fisher from the Titans.

Slightly off-topic, but STILL no OC hire? Nobody playing last week ran the WCO, and obviously nobody playing this week runs the WCO. This is getting depressing. By ‘this’, I mean both the fact that there is not an OC coming and that the Browns are going all-in on the outdated WCO philosophy.

Just heard Pluto on 92.3 talking about this. He hasn’t heard any names either. He thinks Shurmur is having problems finding an OC who won’t call the plays.

It sounded to me like Shurmur would be willing to give that up if the right guy came around. I think we’re waiting on the playoffs to eliminate teams and for other teams to make their HC hires.

Not that it is the right strategy (don’t ask me to defend Shurmur’s search), but maybe he is mentally sold on someone like Sherman and is just waiting to see if he gets a head coaching gig before officially conducting the interview.

It seems to me, though, a bit of a stretch to think that someone who is being talked about for a HC vacancy would come to Cleveland as a castrated OC. I suppose anything is possible.

LOL, it actually surprises me more that someone is considering Mike Sherman for a head coaching job. I think Chilli is coaching the Senior Bowl this week so he could be waiting for that to end too. I agree that there are still 3 open HC jobs so if he’s waiting to see how that pans out its a good indicator they want someone with HC experience or qualifications.
