Clayton's Mailbag :: Browns Draft Dilema Question

Q: Big Browns fan here. A friend of mine and I endlessly debate the state of the Browns and draft strategy. Lately we're wondering whether Colt McCoy has shown enough this year. The Browns desperately need playmakers, and playmakers could help McCoy take another step forward. But the Browns' best chance at drafting a playmaker (their first pick in the 1st round) is the same pick they'd potentially use on a Landry/Barkley. What do you think?

Matt in Columbus, Ohio

A: You may be right. If there is a slam-dunk quarterback for the Browns to draft, they should do it. But I don't get the feeling they are going to get Andrew Luck or Matt Barkley. Is Robert Griffin III or Landry Jones that much better than McCoy? Good question. They might be better served to get a wide receiver with some deep speed. As great as Andy Dalton has been for the Bengals, he's having a great rookie season thanks to A.J. Green. That is the type of playmaker needed for the Browns.

I don’t trust the pony tailed alien.

Landry no, Griffin has X factor so yes.

I think Griffin is way better than Colt.

Well, didn’t learn anything from that.

I agree with his point about A.J. Green. As such, if Justin Blackmon is on the board (not likely), then I strongly support taking him over Jones or Barkley.

Peter King suggested yesterday on Twitter that Blackmon would look good on the Browns.

Blackmon would be an instant massive upgrade over our entire corps of WRs and add a very badly need playmaker to this offense. McCoy or no McCoy.

He has Rams written all over him.

Would we trade ATL’s #1 to STL for Blackmon?

You mean our spot plus the ATL pick? Would do. Blackmon is just tat important.

I agree.

I wouldn’t.

I’m not entirely opposed to the idea, but I get why some wouldn’t want to give up any picks, we have holes everywhere.

I would give up a pick or two, but I would not give up a mid-first to move up a spot or two.

I am a huge Blackmon guy (see my prediction of him being better than AJ Green), but we need more picks, not less.

The only position I would trade up for is QB (early in the first round), and that is something I would be hesitant to do.

yeah, i get the sense that the FO is on your side with this one. high in the first, they’re trading up for a qb or not trading up at all.

I wonder if we could get Terrelle Pryor since Oak picked up Carson Palmer and also have that other guy from Washington.
