Elam: Browns to Sign CB Quincy Butler

According to a tweet by safety Abram Elam, it appears as though the Cleveland Browns have signed defensive back Quincy Butler to the 53-man roster:

Congrats to my boy Quincy Butler new addition to Cleveland Browns secondary!

he came from the Rams we were teammates in Dallas our rookie year!

Butler spent a couple of years on the practice squad of the Cowboys and Rams. He played in 14 games with St. Louis last year, starting in seven of them. He finished the year with 28 tackles and 5 pass deflections. When the Browns faced the Rams in the preseason, Butler was the player who picked off Seneca Wallace's deep pass intended for Carlton Mitchell.

Right now, there is no word on who the Browns waived to make room for Butler. Also, there could be more roster changes on the horizon. An official announcement should come later in the day.

Grossi tweeted the following guesses on the practice squad:

Asante, Geathers, Ivey, Sanford.

I still hope to see Francies on that list.

I’d say it’d be Geathers we don’t see.

I read that Geathers was claimed by Miami.

I think I would have rather kept Francies.

This is very interesting and Butler has really good size (6’1" 190 lbs) and speed too (4.4 40-yard time).

Mangini and Heckert must have liked what they saw of him versus the Rams this preseason.

I’m still confused as to why only 3 CBs were kept though since I thought Francies and D. Smith would have been good depth at the bottom of the depth chart.

Per the Rams site, Butler had five special teams tackles last year.

but that’s sorenson’s job…

This made me laugh.

that wallace deep pass was underthrown, but Butler did a good job keeping up with Mitchell who is pretty fast and played him physically. Now which LB did we drop?

Kinda OT but according to another Elam tweet BMac got picked up by the Cardinals

Congrats @bmcdonald22 headed to the desert with @HamzaAbdullah41 u gon look sweet in that red and black!

Wow, they love our crap don’t they?

they are to us this year what we were to the Jets last year..

HA! Excellent comment!

they signed Hadnot too right?

Yeah, we really should have kept him

They’ve got Jason Wright as well.

Too bad we don’t play them.

I went digging around and found this:

T.J. McCreight is the Cleveland Browns’ Director of Player Personnel and a candidate for the team’s vacant General Manager position. The 2008 season was his fourth with the Browns and second as Director of Player Personnel. McCreight initially joined the Browns as Assistant Director of Player Personnel. McCreight is involved in all facets of the personnel department including pro and college scouting. Before coming to the Browns, McCreight worked for the Baltimore Ravens personnel department from 1997-2004. In his last two years with the Ravens, he served as the team’s national scout. He was featured in Next Man Up, John Feinstein’s book about the 2004-2005 Ravens.

(this is old…but he is now the Player personnel director in arizona_

So they now have our former director of Player personnel (almost like an assistant GM. in charge of coordinating college and pro scouting) and he is their director of scouting other Pro teams…No wonder he is picking up a lot of savage’s crap.

Interesting stuff, bross.

I thought so. Plus, if you read the thread chris made about the practice squad, he lists a few more former browns (picked up during the Savage era) that ended up there.

Is Ralph Brown still playing out there?

The Cardinals picked up Brandon to help teach their receivers…
because he has a lot of experience catching Anderson’s passes in practice

this was pretty good.

Browns GM Tom Heckert confirms that the team did not sign CB Quincy Butler via @TheOBR on Twitter.

Heckert: Tweet on Butler was “kind of erroneous”. We have not done anything with that right now.

People speaking to the media usually won’t confirm a signing if they haven’t officially announced it. Still wouldn’t be surprised to see Butler’s name show up later.

some other interesting quotes…

Heckert: We think we’re OK at cornerback because Mike Adams can play both CB and Safety.
Heckert: Shaun Rogers will start practicing this week. We’re expecting him to be out there.
Heckert: 12 linebackers are because you have to keep extras if some are injured. No exact date on DQJ’s return, but optimistic.

i still expect them to pick up some CBs and drop a few linebackers.

I think Rogers will be ready for game one and I also agree that at least one LB will be dropped and another CB (probably Butler) will be added.

The more I think about it, the more I think the LB situation will shake itself out when the guys who are/were hurt get back up to speed and either show they can play or need to be released. I’m putting DQJ in the former and Barton, who supposedly looked horrible in pre-game 4, in the latter.

I think we’ll open the season with 9 LBs. 10 at the most.

Housh just signed with the Ravens and that makes a deadly combo with him and Boldin as starters.

What’s going on with this? Did Elam jump the gun a lil’?

Never bank on a twit, er, tweet. Whatever. Don’t trust them.
