Well, I had hoped to get one more roster projection up-and-posted, but there's no point now since the cuts are quickly starting to roll in around the league. Today, two of the "big" cuts reported were cornerback Brandon McDonald and defensive end C.J. Mosley.
I doubted McDonald's chances heading into camp, but it seemed like he'd be "okay" as the fourth cornerback. Apparently not, and he won't even get the chance to "rape" Terrell Owens. Mosley, meanwhile, spent all of camp on the physically unable to perform list.
NOTE: GO HERE FOR THE FINAL BROWNS ROSTER CUT THREAD.

Here is the official list of Browns players who have been cut so far:
Offensive Players
- WR Jake Allen - No surprise given he had two horrible drops in the final preseason game, one that led to an interception. He's also made several blunders at the receiver position in other preseason games.
- WR Syndric Steptoe - He was a former seventh-round pick who happened to stick around awhile. I thank him for his cool name, but after several years, it was clear he really couldn't benefit our offense.
- TE Joel Gamble - We didn't get a long look at the young tight end, but he was already released once so this wasn't a surprise.
- OL Casey Bender - Bender had no shot at making the final roster, and neither did Fanaika below. They either didn't get reps in the preseason, or were a part of the offensive line that kept getting McCoy and Ratliff killed.
- OG Paul Fanaika - See above.
- OL Joel Reinders - We finally saw our YouTube project in action against the Bears for a few series. His highlights were allowing a pass rusher to easily blow by him and then to receive a lecture from Mangini on the sideline. There's still an off chance he could be on the practice squad for development.
Defensive Players
- DL C.J. Mosley - With Brian Schaefering coming on strong, this wasn't too big of a surprise I guess. On that note, I would've thought we would've just left him on the PUP for six weeks in case we needed him.
- CB Coye Francies - Can we please try to get Francies on the practice squad? He has a knack for taking a chance at making the tackle at the line of scrimmage rather than waiting for a receiver/runner to come to him.
- CB Brandon McDonald - This is probably the biggest surprise given the news that Gerard Lawson and Coye Francies had already been cut. This either means we will keep the extra safeties for special teams help, or someone like Chris Chancellor or DeAngelo Smith will sneak on the roster. If nothing else, we could probably find a veteran corner who was cut from a different team and sign him.
Use this as the official open thread for rumored cuts on the Browns or big cuts around the NFL. After all the cuts are made, I'll go back and look at the last roster projection I made. However, I'll go on record with one change here: with Montario Hardesty done for the year, I'd insert Chris Jennings in his place by default.
so who is left at CB now? Haden, Brown, Wright, DeAngelo Smith? Chancellor (sp)? I like our top 3 but if someone needs a breather it could be nasty.
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
Mike Adams would probably double as the fourth cornerback if necessary. I’m half expecting us to look on the waiver wire an sign someone who has been cut at the position.
Chris Pokorny - September 4, 2010
That does make sense. Lots of interesting cuts today.
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
DeAngelo Smith has looked good on special teams, he can play some CB, he can play some S, and he can play in sub packages. He seems like a second Mike Adams and the type of guy Mangini might like to have on the end of the 53 and possibly the 45.
Bumblyjack - September 4, 2010
The Falcons just cut Chevis Jackson, a better tackler and physically bigger guy than McDonald. If we’re just looking for a dime back, I’d take him over Mike Adams, who’ll get burned by any decent slot receiver.
Michael Jay - September 4, 2010
FYI, for a list of cuts, the OBR is doing a pretty good job maintaining a list here:
http://forums.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=149&f=1547&t=6307157
If someone finds a link to a good cumulative cuts list somewhere, feel free to share it!
Chris Pokorny - September 4, 2010
With Mosley gone, Geathers will likely stick.
If Rogers can’t come back from his injury yet then we might keep Derreck Robinson too.
Bumblyjack - September 4, 2010
I’m REALLY interested to see the cuts at linebacker. Seeing Mosley cut gives me hope that Mangini won’t keep his old Jets around. Bowens I could live with, but Eric Barton showed nothing last year and we’ve got a ton of youth there for Rob Ryan to play with.
Michael Jay - September 4, 2010
Ratty. Gone.
Donald Thomas and Jarvis Green would be worth a look, I’d think.
golanbatrac - September 4, 2010
Count me in on some Jarvis Green.
Bernie19Kosar - September 4, 2010
I like green. He would be a lot like coleman here. Veteran, solid starter, good size, and lots of 3-4 experience.
Thomas may be worth a look as a backup/spot starting O-Lineman. I would rather have him than any of our backups at this point.
bross09 - September 4, 2010
Again, Mangini’s dumping “his” guys. Major relief. Ratliff hits the practice squad, I’m guessing.
Michael Jay - September 4, 2010
As if it were ever in question that he would dump ‘his guys’ when they were no longer atop the depth chart.
golanbatrac - September 4, 2010
He can’t.
SpecialBrownie - September 4, 2010
I wonder if the Browns will try and go after TJ Houshmanzadeh?
OSUMoneyball - September 4, 2010
Please God no.
Michael Jay - September 4, 2010
I have a feeling he might end up back in cincy.
johnnyphoenix - September 4, 2010
With Cincy cutting Bryant and Jones, I wouldn’t be suprised either. I think that it would be nice if the Browns at least tried to get Delhomme a veteran that can still play a bit. Also someone to help out the younger receivers a bit since I think Engram will be cut.
OSUMoneyball - September 4, 2010
Engram stays, I think.
golanbatrac - September 4, 2010
No way because Jordan Shipley has already taken over Housh’s old role as a possession WR in the slot.
theW0LF - September 4, 2010
79 Catches for 900 yards last year. He may not be great but definitely a second or third option upgrade.
OSUMoneyball - September 4, 2010
Are you serious?!
If the Browns sign Housh, then they are impeding the progress and development of our young WRs.
No thanks.
theW0LF - September 4, 2010
Per the OBR, Ray Ventrone will be on the 53-man roster:
Chris Pokorny - September 4, 2010
When do final cuts have to be made by today?
OSUMoneyball - September 4, 2010
6:00 pm eastern
Browns town - September 4, 2010
Isaac Sowells cut by Bengals. Alex Hall cut again by Giants. Troy Smith cut by Ravens.
golanbatrac - September 4, 2010
Somewhere Jaws is weeping.
North Coast Flea - September 4, 2010
This is how players get screwed by restricted free agency. Smith could’ve found a team that was more interested in him (not us).
TheDriveStillHurts - September 4, 2010 via mobile
I think there will be some legitimate interest in Smith.
bross09 - September 4, 2010
SMITH! GET HIMMMMMMM.
SpecialBrownie - September 4, 2010
No.
golanbatrac - September 4, 2010
All quiet on the roster cut front, but I’m sure the news will come flowing in soon…
Chris Pokorny - September 4, 2010
That’s because the Browns announced they will make all their final cuts official at 6 pm.
theW0LF - September 4, 2010
Yeah, doesn’t seem like any more early leaks (i.e. McDonald, Mosley) will come in.
Chris Pokorny - September 4, 2010
I’ve been scouring and watching Twitter and I got nothing either.
theW0LF - September 4, 2010
Now the Browns have said that they will not make their announcement until close to 8pm.
theW0LF - September 4, 2010
Just wondering, where/who made this announcement? Was it online or someone on radio/TV.
Chris Pokorny - September 4, 2010
My nemesis Tony Grossi just tweeted it.
theW0LF - September 4, 2010
so that means there is only a 50% chance of it being the truth correct? I think thats about how accurate his articles and info are.
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
I wish that were true but he has access more so than either Chris or myself to the Browns and this is the truth seeing as how we have not heard anything yet and it is nearly 7 P.M. now.
theW0LF - September 4, 2010
I still dont get how he got that kinda access. His articles are garbage. I really think that if you, chris, Sam, or Brian were given his access you could make the PD’s Browns coverage bearable again. Hell for your limitations in access you guys are pretty spot on with assessments and recaps and such.
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
It is because all PD reporters are Union.
theW0LF - September 4, 2010
Last I checked, the Plain Dealer was the major daily newspaper in Cleveland. Of course their lead Browns reporter is going to have better access. It has nothing to do with any unions.
woodsmeister - September 4, 2010
I think he may have been commenting on how they get to those positions in the first place.
bross09 - September 4, 2010
You are correct.
theW0LF - September 4, 2010
And thanks for the kind words.
theW0LF - September 4, 2010
not a problem. While I was living in AZ Dawgscooper kept me informed on the QB battle (or lack thereof in terms of talent) between Quinn/Anderson and you literally had a breakdown of each days practice and each pass.
Brian and the rest I saw for the first time here and on Bleacher report and came away impressed. Insightful, for the most part unbiased reporting that didnt just say what the masses wanted to hear. It was like actual gasp journalism.
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
Here are some of the cuts that the Eagles have made (sort of noteworthy in case Heckert sees any alumni):
I liked Norwood when we had him; I’d like him on the practice squad if Mitchell makes the final roster.
Chris Pokorny - September 4, 2010
I am a bit surprised they cut ingram and Demps. They were both young and talented and without them, the depth at TE and SS isn’t great. however, both have had major injury issues so they probably didn’t want to waste any more time on them. I guess getting Nate Allen and Kurt Coleman just makes Demps and Harris expendable…
bross09 - September 4, 2010
Ingram re-injured his knee.
Bernie19Kosar - September 4, 2010
I didn’t know that. I did think (like I said above) it would have to do with his major issues of not staying healthy…because he is a very good talent.
bross09 - September 4, 2010
If Houshmandzadeh goes to the Vikings, that later-round pick I made for him suddenly looks a whole lot better.
Chris Pokorny - September 4, 2010
plus…he will be the starter for most of the year…and has favre. nice pickup.
bross09 - September 4, 2010
Leinart was cut by the Cards, looks like Anderception will be starting after all. In the words or George Lopez: “They’ll learn”.
North Coast Flea - September 4, 2010
that news is so 2 days ago lol seriously though the Cards were in the same boat the Browns were in last year. Leinart/Quinn (Carbon copies of eachother on the field) and Anderson.
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
Former Browns tight end Martin Rucker cut by the Cowboys.
Chris Pokorny - September 4, 2010
Brett Ratliff has been cut according to CLE news.
theW0LF - September 4, 2010
Hopefully this ends the “Colt McCoy cut” garbage thats been floating out there.
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
That rumor was a direct product of Grossi, who wanted some national attention and sadly, he got just that. I’m sure his bosses praised him for that seeing as it brought a ton of attention to both the PD and Cleveland.com, when he should have gotten fired for printing such nonsense.
theW0LF - September 4, 2010
Nothing new, just from Doerschuk this time:
Chris Pokorny - September 4, 2010
Schefter has to have that info…
theW0LF - September 4, 2010
And queue another Lombardi article about “the Secret”.
North Coast Flea - September 4, 2010
Rams cut LB Bobby Carpenter….I think he would make a great addition and both Eric Mangini and Rob Ryan could turn him into a good player here in Cleveland.
theW0LF - September 4, 2010
He’d definitely be worth a flier.
Brad D - September 4, 2010
I think so too…he would be cheap and ready to prove himself worthy of playing in the NFL. Sometimes a guy who is in the position that Carpenter is in, is highly motivated to succeed.
theW0LF - September 4, 2010
Meh.
golanbatrac - September 4, 2010
my thoughts exactly. He may not be a ‘bad’ addition, but I wouldn’t care either way what we did in that situation.
bross09 - September 4, 2010
Also consider the fact that the Browns have many older LBs like Eric Barton, David Bowens, and Scott Fujita. Bringing more youth into the ranks is never a bad thing.
theW0LF - September 4, 2010
thats true…but how many old guys will we have after final roster cuts? I think barton is definitely gone and Bowens could also be out the door. that leaves us with younger guys like gocong, Maiava, and Veikune…in fact, if both of those guys get cut and the roster shakes out like I think it will after that, the average age of the browns LBs, will be 25.9 years old. Carpenter just turned 27 so in a way, he would be a veteran almost on the team. gocong is considered somewhat of a ‘veteran’ on the inside and he has been in the league as long as carpenter and has more game experience.
Even if we keep bowens, carpenter is still older than the average age of our LBs.
bross09 - September 4, 2010
so he wasn’t ready to prove himself worthy of the NFL the past 4 years?
The Licensed Pessimist - September 4, 2010
He just got cut and that is what I was referring to. You read into that wrong.
theW0LF - September 4, 2010
Once the other roster cuts go up, I’ll have another thread up highlighting the released players and any surprise additions.
Chris Pokorny - September 4, 2010
excellent thanks Chris. This feels like Draft day all over again for me in terms of anxiousness. I love Browns season.
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
OT: Just hung out with Delhomme, Mack, and Pashos. They were just drinking some Stein Bach Pale Bock at GLBC. Any other DBN people up there?
Clevo's Finest - September 4, 2010
Were they worried about getting cut?
bross09 - September 4, 2010
Yeah, they were really pounding down some Great Lakes… Probably worried about getting cut.
But last year Martin Rucker was there…
Clevo's Finest - September 4, 2010
hahaha…And rucker got cut, then cut twice this offseason…sucks to be him right now.
bross09 - September 4, 2010
Lions release CB Dre’ Bly.
Chris Pokorny - September 4, 2010
hmmm
Brownie's Year - September 4, 2010
there was a reason he was cut. he was a solid starter…several years ago…
bross09 - September 4, 2010
Didn’t know they had enough depth.
Brownie's Year - September 4, 2010
I dunno if its a depth issue, it may be a ‘dre bly can’t really play anymore’ issue.
bross09 - September 4, 2010
Ur probably right.
Brownie's Year - September 4, 2010
I have no idea…I am just making an assumption since he is 33 and a D-Back and wasn’t amazing in his prime.
bross09 - September 4, 2010
Juaquin Iglesias was cut…just letting any Lisa Lampanelli fans on here know.
OSUMoneyball - September 4, 2010
But somebody I would like to see the Browns get, James Hardy was cut by Buffalo.
OSUMoneyball - September 4, 2010
I saw that, the former second rounder. I haven’t followed him enough, but I wonder why he didn’t play much on a Bills team that seemed to lack receivers.
Chris Pokorny - September 4, 2010
I know one year he was injured. But I remember him on Indiana and giving Ohio State some trouble, I thought that he would at least be better than Ginn.
OSUMoneyball - September 4, 2010
really? I was hearing Hardy had a good shot at winning the job in Buffalo
bross09 - September 4, 2010
Yeah, when I google’d him to make sure it was the same guy I was thinking of, I saw a couple of articles confirming it.
OSUMoneyball - September 4, 2010
Buffalo is a bunch of morons. He’s got some height and skill. do beleive he had some injuries somewhere along the line.
discoinferno083 - September 5, 2010
I hate Lisa Lampanelli.
North Coast Flea - September 4, 2010
Rectified
Brownie's Year - September 4, 2010
The Bears cut loose Dan LeFevour too; Mike Holmgren reportedly liked him prior to the draft.
Chris Pokorny - September 4, 2010
he didnt look too bad that last preseason game. I liked him as a late round prospect in the draft, but we already have a project QB on the roster :(
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
thats a bit of a surprise. then again, they had to cut someone.
bross09 - September 4, 2010
Wow…LeFevour was the Bears’ future more so than Cutler IMO.
theW0LF - September 4, 2010
Woah, that’s surprising.
SpecialBrownie - September 4, 2010
Graham Harrell cut yet again.
golanbatrac - September 4, 2010
I actually have a pre-made thread formatted (so that I can quickly make a new post with all the names) made up. I have a section called “former Browns released,” so Harrell is on the list. Just waiting to post the darn thing already; I’m tired of refreshing pages for the past several hours.
Chris Pokorny - September 4, 2010
Sorry.
And, yeah, the wait is getting a bit ridiculous. I hope they’re up to something big.
golanbatrac - September 4, 2010
You’d better be sorry.
Chris Pokorny - September 4, 2010
like I said to golan, Alex Hall and rucker were both cut. for the second time this offseason. I even posted a FB status about how many former Savage guys are being cut.
bross09 - September 4, 2010
…and Alex Hall cut again…and Martin Rucker cut again. maybe these guys just aren’t NFL players.
bross09 - September 4, 2010
Grossi:
Chris Pokorny - September 4, 2010
If the Browns are trying to make this such a secret, I’m wondering exactly who is on the list. Could there be some suprises that they cut but want to keep (how ever that works)?
OSUMoneyball - September 4, 2010
i wonder if they’re shooting for the all time record
davus - September 4, 2010
im shocked it hasnt been leaked by cut players/agents yet.
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
This is funny
Brownie's Year - September 4, 2010
Didn’t realize NFL.com has a good complete list of league-wide cuts here:
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d81a25abd/article/cutdown-day-teams-release-players-to-reach-53man-roster?module=HP_headlines
Chris Pokorny - September 4, 2010
and ours still isnt complete lol
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
This is all old news though
North Coast Flea - September 4, 2010
interesting note, Cribbs posted a twitter saying “A lot of my boys were released from the team.. :( some things I can’t understand”
This has me expecting some vets/bigger names gone
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
Bobby Engram cut according to Schefter.. and Kooistra
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
Leads me to believe that Carlton Mitchell is now on the active roster.
MoMass, Robo, Stuckey, Cribbs, Mitchell… am I missing any other WR’s?
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
Who the hell backs up Thomas then?
golanbatrac - September 4, 2010
i’m guessing, should he get injured, they’d just put eric steinbach in his place. john st. clair can play LT as well
davus - September 4, 2010
Thomas will NEVER get injured.
Brownie's Year - September 4, 2010
Steinbach. drrrr.
I’ve had this conversation before.
golanbatrac - September 4, 2010
just posted by ESPN Cleveland on Twitter" Waived: L.Asante, C Chancellor, P.Fanaika, C.Geathers, T.Ivey, C.Jennings, B.McDonald, S.Miller, P.Murray, B.Ratliff, B.Sanford & D.Smith
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
So hopefully Robaire and Shaun are ready to go because we dropped quite a few DL players… and shocked to see Asante cut already.
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
Asante, wow
Brownie's Year - September 4, 2010
whats funny about that is they have an article up on Clevelandbrowns.com interviewing him and talking about him possibly getting the call to play this season…
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
asante is a surprise. I think Asante and geathers WILL make the PS.
bross09 - September 4, 2010
I hope they do, Geathers is a project but god damn is he a monster. With the right coaching (Ryan and Mangini) he could be a force on our DL.
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
yeah, i’m excited about geathers as well
davus - September 4, 2010
I agree. I was hoping Him and Mitchell we would keep.
bross09 - September 4, 2010
Not surprised about Kooistra…Engram wasn’t that big of a surprise, but he looked nice when he saw the field.
bross09 - September 4, 2010
I thought they would keep Kooistra over Yates who has looked AWFUL.
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
ditto.
golanbatrac - September 4, 2010
I agree. I just thought both would be cut (I guess I thought we would go with St. Clair and porkchop as backups and then pick up a waiver wire guy)
bross09 - September 4, 2010
in other news Shaun Rogers activated from the PUP according to ESPN Cleveland
Justin Kowalczyk - September 4, 2010
Horay
Brownie's Year - September 4, 2010
I’m taking this with a grain of salt…it could be possible that they may still miss a couple of games but the Browns didn’t want them to have to sit out 6 games.
OSUMoneyball - September 4, 2010
Hey guys, if you don’t mind, let’s try to move the reaction discussions over to the new thread:
