D'Qwell Jackson Put On IR

It is over before it even started.

The Browns have announced that they have placed ILB D'Qwell Jackson on season ending Injured Reserve. They have filled his roster spot by signing Sam Aiken who was last seen playing for the New England Patriots.

Last we heard was that DQ had a setback in his rehab and was planning on giving it some rest. Apparently it was much more severe than originally thought. This puts DQ's future with the Browns in major peril. An ILB that has missed a season and a half due to the same injury, albeit different sides, can't be counted on as a major cog in a defense. He is a free agent after this season, after signing his one year restricted free agent tender before this year.

This move means that someone in the middle is going to have to step up. With Maiavia and DQ now on IR, the Browns ILB depth is quickly drying up.

H/T to Browns Town for the tip

**UPDATE**

Shawn Rogers (hip, ankle) and Brian Robiskie (hamstring) have been ruled out for Sunday's game. H/T Avidian for the tip

I’ll say it again.

Oh my f&*king god. Trade this glass muscled guy.

We can’t.

This was his final season under contract.

You mean we can’t because it’d be highly unlikely or that’s just a rule?

It’s a rule. We can’t trade a player who we have on our IR. Then after the season ends, he’s no longer under contract with the Browns.

That’s what I have heard anyways. But even if he could be traded, it’s also highly unlikely because he wouldn’t be able to go to the active roster of the other team. So this other team would be gambling that when the next season comes around, they would be the ones to sign DQ to that fat contract he wants.

You’re correct.

You can’t trade a player that is injured. He wouldn’t pass the other teams physical. Now the Browns could reach an injury settlement with DQ and then release him. You see moves like that with lesser players that are injured but are able to return in shorter time frames (6-8 weeks for example).

Should have gotten value out of him while we could have.

Who would trade for a guy that can’t play the rest of the season and is then a free agent? Phil Savage?

I didn’t think it through.

The thought was good, just not possible.

so does this mean a full season of eric barton?

At least until the wheels finally come off of him.

Thanks Phil.

Just another example of horrible, horrible luck with injuries (Baxter, Bentley, etc etc).

But hey, good thing we shipped off Wimbley for Gocong! That guy’s been all over the field for us! /sarc

I do not miss Wimbley’s one spin move into the dirt.

Two sacks and a FF so far.

Just sayin’.

I know for a fact that’s coming from being with the Raiders. Whether it’s from the system or the fact that people are just forgetting about him, but that’s not Wimbley.

I assume that this is a joke.

Of course. We all know that sacks earned while playing for the Raiders don’t really count, because when teams play the Raiders they often forget what players are on their team.

because when teams play the Raiders they often forget what players are on their team.

I assume that this is a fact.

Also, gtfo.

You didn’t know? sacks earned while as Raider was apart of the old CBA.

they are playing 2 different positions in 2 different Defensive systems.

I don’t care. On third down Wimbley has his hand down here or there.

I was just thinking that you were still trying to do Kwoog's thing of comparing Gocong to Wimbley, which now I realize you probably weren't.

We didn’t ship him off for Gocong. We moved him to make room for Marcus Benard, who is a younger, less-expensive version of Wimbley.

I don’t agree. He’s one measly year younger, can’t play the run or defend the pass 1/4th as well as Wimbley, and his pass rush skills are equal at best. All of which doesn’t address the point that Gocong has been invisible and Wimbley is still a solid starting NFL linebacker.

Wimbley is among the worst linebackers against the run I’ve ever seen. He’s very good against the pass, but never developed into a complete linebacker. To continue paying him top dollar wouldn’t help the Browns win games. Even so, I would have liked to see him stay this year.

Your insistance that we somehow swapped Wimbley for Gocong is absurd. Wimbley was dealt well before we acquired Gogong, and Gocong wasn’t even the player we were after in that trade. Sheldon Brown was. Gocong was an afterthought.

Even so, Gocong has, I think, one fewer tackle on the season than Wimbley, so I guess you’re going to need to define ‘invisible’.

Strongly disagree on his abilities vs. the run.

I compare Wimbley vs. Gocong b/c of the synergy of all the moves, not the direct swap. When Wimbley was dealt, Holmgren said it would eventually become apparent what their plan was, and Gocong was then acquired at the LB position with a lot of hype how he’d be a better fit in the 3-4. I appreciate the possible overall upgrade that Gocong/Fujita/Brown/whatever is for the defense over just Wimbley… I just think undoing that Wimbley trade makes this a better defense. Roth/Wimbley/Fujita/Jackson-whoever is better than what we have now…

For a team trying to build from the ground up, trading a guy that will want to be paid in a year makes a lot of sense.

well…the planted Gocong in a different position on D than wimbley played. benard, who came on at the end last season at Wimbley’s backup stepped into wimbley’s role, and so far, has been as good.

He’s one measly year younger

actually, there are only 12 months in a year, not 22.

Actually, in the limited statistics we have, he can play the run and pass MUCH better. He looked good last year against the run in limited action. Wimbley’s numbers suggest he is a solid LB against the pass, but well below average when defending the run. there are stats to show it and any game tape you can find of him missing a tackle bad.

you don’t address golan’s point that marcus benard is less expensive too. Just in basic base salary (discounting bonuses like roster bonuses and start bonuses which are more prevalent in wimbley’s contract), wimbley is about 2.8 times more expensive than benard this year. in raw financial breakdown, we made a good decision even if benard is HALF the player wimbley is (and he is much more than half).

wimbley will also be an unrestricted free agent this year and will likely demand much more money. Benard will be a FA, but he is an ERFA, and ERFAs have no negotiating rights (and we retain him even if he doesn’t sign). in raw front office numbers, Benard is a much wiser investment.

Gocong doesn’t even play the same position. they play 2 different positions in 2 different defensive systems and have 2 different sets of responsibilities.

Wimbley was traded for a draft pick and is also a free agent after this season.

the combination of these newses is terrible, particularly for Sunday.

mayeb stuckey/ Cribbs will show up.

Cribbs is questionable.

So. DQ, Rogers, Robobiskit, Delhomme is out.

Cribbs, Harrison are questionable.

Well, damn.

I know. As if tomorrow wasn’t looking dismal enough.

Maybe I should just keep drinking through Sunday....

….and stay away from the keyboard, at that. Apologies for the dreaded headline.

I can’t recall a break for this franchise in my lifetime. I guess a certain owner( not to be named) worked the system to get Bernie. But beyond that, they have been few and far between.

I’m taking a little comfort in knowing that the defense has played good without him so far. To think of our defense with Jackson in there instead of Barton makes me realize that we may be really close to having a very good defense.

In lieu of Jackson going on IR, the Browns should move Fujita to ILB (where he has played ILB in the past) and then start Benard at OLB opposite of Roth.

“In lieu of” means “instead of,” not “in light of” or something similar. I think I saw you use it this way in a headline in the past. Check it out:

BB is not going to like you impinging on his turf.

I agree. I HATE seeing barton at ILB. The thing is, Rob Ryan likes guys who are versatile. Fujita is versatile, however he is not a ‘pass rush specialist’. usually you want two of those guys to start at your OLB spots. Fujita can rush the passer (like gocong) but would be a better fit at ILB where he can diagnose plays. Even though roth and benard are pass rush specialists, they are good run defenders for 3-4 OLBs, which helps to give us versatility.
