In today's edition of Around the Pound, we take a look at Jim Brown turning down Holmgren's invitation again to the Ring of Honor ceremony, a player from the Buccaneers in hot water after last week's game, what Eric Mangini has been saying in the press conferences, and some personal touting from the official Dawgs By Nature fantasy football league.
Is it wrong that I'm starting to get the same feeling from Jim Brown's quotes that I do whenever I see Braylon Edwards mention Cleveland in an interview? With the Ring of Honor ceremony approaching this Sunday, Brown has once again officially turned down the team's offer to be at the ceremony, according to FOXnews:
"No, I won't be going. My legacy won't be defined by Holmgren."
Good riddance. Honestly, Brown has probably done the team a favor in terms of making fans more aware that a Ring of Honor ceremony will be taking place in the team's home opener.

Remember how Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib was suspended for last week's game against Cleveland? Well, apparantly the terms of a suspension indiciate that you can't attend the game, even as a spectator. According to reports, Talib was at the stadium watching the game from a private box.
When he was asked by the St. Petersburg times where he watched the game, he told them he watched it from near his home in Dallas. The NFL is now investigating the situation.
While linebacker D'Qwell Jackson is expected to practice today for the first time in about a month, he doesn't think he'll see action this week against the Chiefs:
"I doubt it at this point," Jackson said of playing against the Chiefs. "In order for me to play I have to have a week of practice just to get the feel of everything."
During his Thursday morning press conference, head coach Eric Mangini talked about preparing for the Chiefs:
"What we're working on today is the Chiefs. We'll do some review from yesterday, cover some of the two minute situations and really standard in terms of our prep for an opponent so nothing out of the ordinary there either. I know their numbers weren't very good offensively on third down, but Charlie (Weis) is creative and I think they do a good job of identifying what the defense is in and I know Matt (Cassel). I've known Matt for a long time and he's a really smart guy so I think that they'll present some challenges. In addition to that, like we talked about yesterday, they have quite a variety of guys that can make plays in those situations.
Offensively, I thought that the plan that they had against San Diego last week, especially on third down, was a good one. It was aggressive in terms of the way that they covered them, a lot of bump man last week which you got to hold up and they held up well against a really good passing offense. They did a nice job in terms of getting some pressure on the quarterback some with design pressures and some with just a four man front. That's what we are focusing on here this afternoon."

Ooooh we got some trash talk going!
emily522 - September 17, 2010
If I want to compete I need Matt Schaub and AP to score more than 17 points combined.
notthatnoise - September 17, 2010
No pun intended, but Clemson has some dawgs.
SpecialBrownie - September 18, 2010
Let take a different approach with Jim Brown. I am 37, have never seen Jim Brown play, havent seen him do anything substantial to help the current version of the Browns & in fact all I’ve seen him do is create problems. For myself if he doesnt want to come because his feelings are hurt thats fine. I see no reason to have an attachment to him. I understand history & its value it but when history doesnt care the present or its influence on the future then it isnt really of value.
sleepy042 - September 17, 2010
Same deal here. I never saw Jim Brown play. I grew up with Walter Payton, the consummate professional and person. I think about #32 and in my mind, there is no comparison to #34.
Monsters of the Midway - September 17, 2010
Well, for what he did in the game, that is false. For the way he acts though, that’s probably true.
SpecialBrownie - September 17, 2010
I still think Payton’s steroid use is open to debate, but there’s nothing more than circumstantial evidence for that.
notthatnoise - September 17, 2010
I agree. He certainly didn’t do much of anything to help in his ambiguous ‘advisor’ role. And like I mentioned before, if he truly was a legitimate ‘advisor’ then he deserves to be fired like the rest of them for, well, sh*tty advice. He wasn’t even fired anyways, he was just given a title and responsibilities befitting what he was actually doing…which was standing there wearing his hat and looking surly….basically just being Jim Brown. He’s acting like a janitor who gets pissed for being called one instead of a ‘floorcare technician’ or something.
johnnyphoenix - September 18, 2010
Parenthood’s season premiere was good.
golanbatrac - September 17, 2010
I think “the feeling you get” is wrong.
Jim Brown is not the type of historical proponent you can afford to disenchant, if this is a Browns site with any type of reasonable slant on continuity.
Party has participate in it, if Jim Brown does not participate, it´s not a Browns party.
mooncamping - September 17, 2010
We don’t need Jim Brown anymore, we all have Joe Thomas to look up to now.
North Coast Flea - September 18, 2010
I’m obscurely reminded of a Roger Ebert quote from a review of TOP GUN:
I vote we routinely acknowledge Jim Brown’s awesome on the field performance, and routinely ignore anything that comes out of his mouth in the present day.
RelapsingDawgCatcher - September 18, 2010
awesome. rec.
Dawg Nuts - September 19, 2010
I feel you’re due for an avatar change…
Nothing that directly relates to your name of course…
SpecialBrownie - September 19, 2010
I know, I’m pretty attached to that picture but now seems like the time. it seems ridiculous commenting about how big of an asshole jim brown is and having his picture next to it.
Dawg Nuts - September 19, 2010
Jim Brown disenchanted HIMSELF. And Jim Brown doesn’t dictate how or when the Browns ‘party.’ He’s been afforded every manner of respect and reverence befitting his career with the Browns, and the fact that he can’t see that is his fault…no one else’s.
johnnyphoenix - September 18, 2010
Alright, that´s your honest opinion.
But regarding club culture, you´re decision is not pro generational involvement.
mooncamping - September 19, 2010
Whoa. How did Culture Club get into this conversation? Never mind. I misread that.
JustBob - September 19, 2010
pro generational involvement in club culture?
Moon, do you really want to hurt me?
johnnyphoenix - September 19, 2010
Why would Mike Holmgren amble on in and tick off one of the most well known player personalities available to the Browns? Who is the new guy, Jim Brown or Mike Holmgren?
mooncamping - September 20, 2010
1. If I have to choose between Jim Brown and The Cleveland Browns I’m choosing The Cleveland Browns.
2. They got rid of Bernie too…and he went quietly.
I will always respect Jim Brown for being the greatest player in franchise history and one of the very best to ever play the game…BUT I’m starting to see why the front office asked him to resign from his position.
Bumblyjack - September 17, 2010
This is where everyone else starts to see what us smart fans already saw, much like LeBron… a jackass that everyone else loved and gave the benefit of the doubt too… until now.

That’s pretty bad for Bernie to only get 4 points from his running backs. My WR numbers should go down this week, so hopefully my RB numbers, through MJD, go up to balance things out.
Chris Pokorny - September 17, 2010
Yeah, I thought that was pretty interesting; Bernie takes backs with three of his first four picks and gets 4 points; I take Wide receivers with three of my first four and lead the league in points from backs (thank you very much Mr. Foster). It’ll be a wash soon enough though.
golanbatrac - September 17, 2010
Yeah, my RB’s straight killed me.
I actually would have won if Floyd would have caught that last second TD.
Bernie19Kosar - September 17, 2010
criminy i need to fix my TE/K/DEF
sleepy042 - September 17, 2010
I wouldn’t do anything too drastic just yet. The sample size is waaay too small to be significant. Give it a few weeks (I’ll be updating these stats every week for the duration of the season) and if you’re still lagging, then, maybe, you might want to think about adjusting your roster.
golanbatrac - September 17, 2010
Do you have a message board in your league?
Brownie's Year - September 17, 2010
Yea, I don’t even pay close attention to the result until week 4 or 5. I try to keep playing who I think are the better players.
Roger Dorn - September 17, 2010
I had a good week. Top 3 in every category, and I think I was number 2 overall. It’s a long season though. I don’t see Welker and Forte giving me the numbers they gave me that often (though Welker is always good for a solid number). But on the other hand, I don’t see Ray Rice putting up 5 points all too often either.
TheDriveStillHurts - September 17, 2010
I got ripped for my Welker pick at when I took him. He’s healthy and a solid target for Brady. Don’t worry about him.
Brownie's Year - September 17, 2010
Not worried about him at all — he is a solid starting WR. Just saying you can’t count on him putting up the numbers he put up last week every week. He usually racks up yards not TD’s.
TheDriveStillHurts - September 17, 2010
Yeah, my team was terrible last week. Andre Johnson didn’t do very much and Beanie Wells was injured. I thought that I had started Darren McFadden in his place when I saw that Bush wasn’t playing but was mistaken and started Sims-Walker (who didn’t have a catch) so that really hurt me. McFadden’s 20 points would have made my score much more respectable.
Buckeye Brad - September 17, 2010
Not going in to the Jim Brown issue but gunna say he’s an idiot.
Good to see Jackson back.
The Jet’s OC is full of crap. If sucky Sanchez loses the ball he will not be pulled.
Fringe is back. YAY Both Olives are stuck on the wrong side. Can’t wait for next weeks premiere.
There’s only one FF league that matters and that belongs to the DBN misfits.
Brownie's Year - September 17, 2010
after 1 week of play, let’s just say i’m pleased I took peyton manning with my first rounder.
Dawg Nuts - September 17, 2010
I only watched/listened to a few minutes of the Jets game and in that short period of time Braylon got called for 2 penalties that caused a good play to be negated, and he wasn’t anywhere near where the action was in either case.
I don’t think you can compare Jim Brown to Braylon. Jim Brown has always been an angry, bitter man (and somewhat for good reason). Braylon is just an idiot.
I’m just glad we’re finally getting some recognition of this teams great history.
HenryDawg - September 17, 2010
In other news, I caught my flag football team’s first and only TD pass yesterday! We lost haha.
emily522 - September 17, 2010
Nice job!
Buckeye Brad - September 17, 2010
Braylon 0 – Emily 1
golanbatrac - September 17, 2010
Can we please make this green?
emily522 - September 17, 2010
In other news, Joe Namath ripped Braylon.
emily522 - September 18, 2010
In what way?
SpecialBrownie - September 18, 2010
Is there a link to this? That should be a FanShot.
Brownie's Year - September 18, 2010
I will post it.
emily522 - September 19, 2010
Should I just go ahead and drop Robiskie for Manningham?
emily522 - September 18, 2010
I don’t think Robiskie is worth keeping on any fantasy team.
Buckeye Brad - September 18, 2010
Yeah. I took him with my last pick hoping he’d break out. I’ll wait until after this week to see what he does.
emily522 - September 18, 2010
I doubt anyone picks him up. To me that’s one of the most important parts of fantasy football, acquiring people, whether it be draft or waiver wire at places where they have proper value.
Villeslgr - September 18, 2010
Disappointed Jackson won’t be back this week, excited he is back practicing already.
rufio - September 18, 2010
Thankfully, he should be back when our schedule turns into hell.
AG7 - September 18, 2010
Hey Chris, I’m going to be at the game tomorrow and I am interested to see if Browns fans boo Jim Brown when his name is announced.
I will bring my video camera to tape it as long as it is not raining and I will send you the link and embed if fans do indeed boo his name,

OT: Kent State vs. Penn State on ESPN2. Or as I like to call it…
SpecialBrownie vs. Dawg Nuts.
SpecialBrownie - September 18, 2010
After the Bama game, PSU is going to be out for blood today. I watched the first 8 minutes or so today, and I don’t believe there is much hope for Kent State.
AG7 - September 18, 2010
KSU is having spurts of a competent team. PSU is out to an early 14-0 lead but you’d expect that from a Big Ten team playing the MAC. But, PSU is hitting some walls against us.
SpecialBrownie - September 18, 2010
Yeah, I’ve got to give Kent State’s D some credit. They shut it down after those first two drives.
AG7 - September 18, 2010
i guess its not like OSU vs. OU
bross09 - September 18, 2010
Noo, OSU dominated, where PSU looks like they need some serious work.
AG7 - September 18, 2010
yeah. It seems that way about Penn State. Still…we saw Todd Bauserman in the 2nd quarter. just a ridiculous game.
bross09 - September 19, 2010
i think any realistic penn state fan knows that 8 wins will be a decent season for us this year. we’ll be pretty decent next year and will likely contend in 2012.
Dawg Nuts - September 19, 2010
if only for today, I own you.
Dawg Nuts - September 19, 2010
Since I couldn’t get OU-OSU, I decided to watch Arkansas-UGA.
I have always been a Ryan Mallett fan, and he has done nothing to stop me today. If we are looking for a QB come April, that argument is for another day, I am all in for Mallett.
Bernie19Kosar - September 18, 2010
ARK QB, right? He’s a big dude. 6’6" 240. Freaking monster.
Brownie's Year - September 18, 2010
I have heard comparisons to a more talented DA. Huge guy, extremely strong arm. Highly inconsistent. terrible accuracy.
however, if he is for real and the UGA game is actually a sign of him improving on these traits, then i might consider it.
bross09 - September 18, 2010
actually if you get a chance look at the end of the arkansas game where they won the game. The Georgia defense went to a zone but the CB didnt drop back far enough to help out the safety who took a bad angle on the WR for a tackle (looked like brandon mcdonald actually). mullett didnt win the game on his own a defensive blunder did. though he did show some decent pocket presence i must admit.
sleepy042 - September 19, 2010
ok. I saw a bit of the game and he looked good. I didn’t watch all of it. He definitely still needs work.
bross09 - September 19, 2010
I’m glad he stayed for one more year.
He looks solid and polished. Count me in for the Mallett Monster.
SpecialBrownie - September 18, 2010
That final drive was a thing of beauty.
Bernie19Kosar - September 18, 2010
I didn’t see Jake Locker play but his stats looked ugly — 4/20 for 71 yards with 1TD and 2 picks. That’s terrible! I know he was playing against a really good defense but the supposed #1 pick in the draft shouldn’t put up numbers like that.
Buckeye Brad - September 19, 2010
He destroyed syracuse, but last I remember, they are sucking at football. He wasn’t bad, but pretty pedestrian (1 TD, 7 ypa, 54 comp %…basically locker of 2009) against BYU. He doesn’t look like he has significantly improved overall over last year…still highly inconsistent against good teams. I already had serious doubts if he could be a franchise QB.
bross09 - September 19, 2010
Andrew Luck looks good too.
emily522 - September 19, 2010
I love me some luck. Locker doesn’t impress me, Mallett I would only take if he shows tremendous strides this year (or else he could be Jamarcus Russell-esque). Luck is just money in the bank.
bross09 - September 19, 2010
andrew luck is looking like the real deal though….
