Well, that was a huge disappointment.
In a game where the Cleveland Browns started off with a sizable advantage, it was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who came away with a 17-14 victory.
The game started off as good as Browns fans could have imagined. New quarterback Jake Delhomme connected with Mohamed Massaquoi on a 41-yard score in the first quarter. After the Buccaneers added a 49-yard field goal, the Browns started going to work with Jerome Harrison and Peyton Hillis on the ground. After a 39-yard burst by Harrison, Hillis finished the drive with a 10-yard touchdown run.

The defense was dominating Tampa Bay in the first half, and the Browns were driving again with under a minute to play. On a first down play, Delhomme inexplicably threw the football toward the sideline as he was being tackled to the ground. The ball landed right in the hands of cornerback Ronde Barber, who returned the pass all the way down to the 3-yard line. On the first play, Josh Freeman's pass to Mike Williams went right into the hands of Sheldon Brown, but the ball bounced high into the air and was hauled back in by Williams. What could have easily been a 17-3 lead for the Browns headed into halftime was suddenly a 14-10 lead.
Delhomme and company seemed to regroup to begin the second half though, as Delhomme connected on passes of 49- and 16-yards to tight end Evan Moore. Just when the Browns were looking to re-take a two possession lead, Hillis fumbled and the Browns turned the ball over again.
Overall, the Browns' defense did a great job stopping the Buccaneers. The offense couldn't move the ball again though and were consistently starting backed up in our own territory. Eventually, Tampa Bay finally connected on a score to receiver Michael Spurlock, with rookie Joe Haden in coverage. That gave Tampa Bay a 17-14 advantage with under seven minutes to play.
The offense couldn't muster anything else though, and for a game in which the Browns should have won, they lost. Credit goes to Tampa Bay for taking advantage of Cleveland's mistakes, but I still believe the better team lost today.
Next up, the Browns take on the Kansas City Chiefs at home. I don't have a problem with the Browns' playcalling to begin the game, but there should have been more emphasis on the run. For a game in which the Browns were leading most of the game and only lost by three points, there's no way that our top two running backs should have had 18 carries compared to Delhomme's 37 pass attempts.
I'm not ready to throw Delhomme under the bus. His pass at the end of the first half was bad, but it's the fault of the offensive coordinator for not keeping the ball on the ground more often. I'll have more in my in-depth recap this week, but right now it's time to go burn off some steam.

Damn it, damn it, damn it. My fantasy week is over… losing 40 to 80 ($ league).
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
Haha.
SpecialBrownie - September 12, 2010
It’s only 1 week. I’ve won the ship after starting 0-5 in 2007.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
so what exactly has this team done to make anyone think we were the better team?
VABrownsFan - September 12, 2010
Half our starting lineup is different, maybe?
StuckInPa - September 12, 2010
The first half.
But we just lost it and imploded.
SpecialBrownie - September 12, 2010
Be careful what you wish for....
Its my fault fellas (lol) I wanted the Browns to get off to a fast start cause I had to work and started MoMass over Hines Ward…..funny it was 14-3 when I left and MoMass had the first TD reception…..maybe I shoulda said fast start and KEEP TWISTING THE SCREWS DABOLL……asshole
year of the elf - September 13, 2010 via mobile
Did you watch the first half? The problem is were still the Browns, letting teams hang around and giving away ball games that we dominate in for 50 minutes.
troy145 - September 12, 2010
one good half a mediocre football team does not make. delhomme looked like delhomme of old and our offense just ran out of steam. i know its early but i don’t think this team can make 7-9 or even 6-10
VABrownsFan - September 12, 2010
The Delhomme of old was a competent QB. This is the newer sucky Delhomme.
North Coast Flea - September 12, 2010
You guys will be fine...
If Delhomme can’t do it, and I think he’s got something positive left to prove; Wallace can run, and hell, why not see what Colty can do? (BTW I am all in favor of a massive youth movement in my Carolina QB Dept) Enter Clausen!!
SwankTheTank - September 12, 2010
i dont think anyone is making the case that we’re going to go 15-1 based off of what we saw in the first half. But there is reason for hope that every team as crappy as TB won’t beat us.
troy145 - September 12, 2010
i don’t get why we think TB is worse than us
VABrownsFan - September 12, 2010
They may not be… but they are an absolutely atrocious team, regardless.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
I didn’t say they were (although I do believe they). I just said I hope and i think i have reason to belive teams as bad as TB don’t beat us.

I feel better about ‘reaching’ for Arian Foster in the fourth round.
golanbatrac - September 12, 2010
On the bright side, we gave up zero sacks and averaged 4.5 yards per carry . . . Is there any word on what it was that ailed Delhomme? Cramps?
Les Fleurs Du Mal - September 12, 2010
I think turf toe.
SpecialBrownie - September 12, 2010
Not good. Turf toe is chronic and can ruin a season for a guy
Les Fleurs Du Mal - September 12, 2010
According to Delhomme his ankle stiffened up on him. I thought we should have pulled him for a little bit to see if that anle was really a problem and see if it was still bugging him a little later.
BrownDawg1409 - September 12, 2010
Turf toe is awful and a lot worse than it sounds.
rufio - September 12, 2010
why can harrison average over 5 yards a carry and only touch the ball 9 times???
JBrownFan - September 12, 2010
Yeah, some sort of infatuation with Hillis.
Western Reserve - September 12, 2010
…not that he was bad. it was more like an infatuation in Delhomme, having him throw it almost 40 times.
bross09 - September 12, 2010
that was half the carries today, which speaks to a larger problem. It’s like Daboll completely forgot what made us successful last year.
notthatnoise - September 12, 2010
take out his longest run and his average drops substantially.
troy145 - September 13, 2010
take away Chris Johnson’s 76 yard run today and he has 26 carries for 66 yards, 2.5 yards per carry and a touchdown. That is nothing special and definitely not #1 overall fantasy. However, like johnson, harrison does rely on big plays, being that he is a home run threat.
These guys grind it out, maybe rushing 20 times in a game and barely moving forward (like CJ did today…well yesterday now) and then breaking a 50 yarder. this is just the nature of the home run threat. Hillis is the opposite kind of guy. He will get you 3-4 every time but will likely not break a big one more than 15 yards. He relies on solid yards every rush. Play to play, I guess you could say a guy like that is more ‘reliable’ but game breakers and home run threats are definitely useful. they put tons of pressure on the D. When they aren’t breaking plays, which sometimes happens, you get what happened to CJ Spiller today…no production at all.
bross09 - September 13, 2010
I’ll take 2.5 over 1.6 any day of the week. besides, I was addressing what that guy said – not how good or bad Jerome is.
troy145 - September 13, 2010
9 carries is a ridiculously small sample, and like bross said, if you are removing the longest carry from every back in the league, the averages would drop substantially. In addition to Chris Johnson, Mendenhall had something like 73 yards on 21 carries until his 50 yard TD won the game in overtime and gave him a respectable 120 on 22 carries.
Harrison proved himself worthy down the stretch last year of deserving 15-20 carries/game especially with Hardesty out and the lack of team speed this offense has.
Roger Dorn - September 13, 2010
with any back, even power guys, their average would go down…however, it affects home run hitters the most.
bross09 - September 13, 2010
well…I would take chris johnson over Jerome Harrison any day of the week. whats the point.
His comment was about why didn’t harrison get more touches. the fact that he broke a long run is pretty irrelevant to the fact that he should have gotten more touches. regardless of whether or not he got most of it from a long run, he was having a good game. harrison is the kind of guy that gets most of his yards from longer runs, so its not surprising that take away those, and he isn’t that good. however, that doesn’t mean you should stop handing it off to him.
bross09 - September 13, 2010
Unless Driver and Romo have huge games, I’m boned.
SpecialBrownie - September 12, 2010
No shot whatsoever. That game is over. Foster was way to much.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
I hate Rotoworld.
We should’ve won this game. If we play like this against the Rams, we’re screwed.
And Aaron Rodgers needs to throw a TD for me to offset that pick.
emily522 - September 12, 2010
I don’t read Rotoworld, but their totally right about Robo’s fantasy potential. It’s not existent. With MoMass in front of him and Delhomme at QB, he’s not worth a roster spot outside of maybe a 25 man league.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
He’s on my roster. I’ll probably drop him if he doesn’t do anything soon. I think Rotoworld may be written by Licensed Pessimist.

emily522 - September 12, 2010
Oh it’s KC next week. Never mind.
emily522 - September 12, 2010
I actually thought going into the season that TB would be better than the Rams. I didn’t get to watch the game, but the first half was encouraging. If we don’t turn the ball over so much relative to our TDs, I think we can play with a lot of teams.
rufio - September 12, 2010
Ha, E trade baby is funny.
SpecialBrownie - September 12, 2010
There’s enough blame to go around that Jake should not be thrown under the bus. How many fumbles did we have??? ST came up small, making bad field position even worse.
Spidey - September 12, 2010 via mobile
Im on board with you for this. Saw some things from Jake I really liked. He didn’t lose the game single handedly… far from it.
troy145 - September 12, 2010
Agreed. The first one he had a legit target but he got hit as he released. Second was a long shot becasue of bad play calling putting us in a crappy situation where he needed to force a play or try to spread the field.
bigdawgbacker - September 12, 2010
Box score said 3 fumbles.
rufio - September 12, 2010

Clevo's Finest - September 12, 2010
Well, now that I’ve basically lost my fantasy game, (and after a depressing Browns loss), football is suddenly a lot less entertaining.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
Back home, I would wake at 3am, watch us lose, then sleep at 6am and forget everything when I wake up.
Now that I’m in Canada I have a whole day to be depressed about it.
But hey, I’m smashing Simmsinns in FF. Silver lining!
skipkirk - September 12, 2010
There we go! You just gave me exactly what I needed!
The game is hardly over! You’re only up 10 and I’ve 3 players to go compared to your 2. I’ll be honest, in a league with a $200 prize makes any other leagues much less of a concern. BUT, you wanna talk shit, I’m game! I love this. I’ve got a reason to watch some football again. Beat you in some fantasy football. That’s what it’s all about after all. And “smashing” really? C’mon now guy… it’s 10 points. Lol, “silver lining.”
By the way, I’ll also basically cancel out any TDs and yards Rivers throws to his favorite target, Gates.
Go McNabb! Woooooo! I’m pumped again.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
If I lose it’ll be really unfortunate… but if I win, you won’t hear the end of it for at least a couple of days. I hope you’ll do the same. :)
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
After the Hillis fumble early in the 3rd, the Browns had all of 6 rushing attempts the rest of the game. Great call Daboll.
bbstirrd - September 12, 2010
Daboll seems to really break down when stuff starts to clog up.
SpecialBrownie - September 12, 2010
Daboll seems to really break down after the coin toss…
bigdawgbacker - September 12, 2010
He has been very good going into the game where he has time to gameplan and script his plays. BQ actually looked like a solid QB on many of our first drives last year.
He has not been close to as good after the first series or two.
I can’t tell yet if Daboll simply isn’t good at thinking on his feet or if our offense just isn’t complex enough yet to have the counter punches to respond to a cat/mouse game.
rufio - September 12, 2010
I think its both.
Ryan Kelsey - September 12, 2010

SwankTheTank - September 12, 2010
I’m not sure he’s worth how much we’re paying him though… actually me might not be worth the paper it’s printed on.

Brownie's Year - September 12, 2010
We did pretty solid in his last start, the final preseason game. I think sucks asshole is an exaggeration.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
Also, Colt had no chance behind the protection he was getting. Not that he will be good in the first team O, just that we shouldn’t write him off quite yet.

didn’t see the game. can someone break down the fumbles for me (yahoo said Hillis had 2 and Cribbs had 1)
and several o-line penalties, right?
did we get lost in the hype? I think Mangini needs to lay down the law again.
seems like last year’s team (weak on talent, but disciplined) may not have lost this game.
discoinferno083 - September 12, 2010
I also did not like how Tampa kept rushing and breaking our left side. If the left side with Big Joe can’t hold a Tampa pass rush we are in deep when we play in our division and they hit our supposed weak right. Jake is def. not a mobile QB. Hmmm…maybe if we ran the ball more it would break that rush up.
bigdawgbacker - September 12, 2010
poor game management by Mangini/Daboll/Delhomme
Will Mangini last the whole year or will Holmgren toss him out on his ear during the
bye week?
palcal - September 12, 2010
I’m sorry but they completely panicked, even as we still held a lead. This is completely on Mangini’s shoulders in that he has never been able to be a positive presence in times of adversity. His petulant baby routine travels through the whole Browns sideline. Did he bench Hillis after his second fumble? I wouldn’t be surprised because I didn’t see him again until the very end. Time management? Horrible. If it was Daboll who panicked by giving up on the run then Mangini should have taken time out from his sulking to get his play calling more focused. He’s a turd who should have never have been made a head coach, and even though our moron owner did it, we could have flushed him last year.
HenryDawg - September 12, 2010
Christopher Christ on a Crutch, you’d think we lost by 30 points the way some people act. It ain’t like we’re going to the Super Bowl this year. It’s a developmental / rebuilding year.
Calm down Chicken Little. It’s one game. The defense looked good in spots, as did the offense. No reason to panic.
golanbatrac - September 12, 2010

emily522 - September 12, 2010
I’m not panicking (sp) because there is nothing to panic about. I mean c’mon, was anyone really expecting playoffs? Gotta be realistic or you’ll go insane. I won’t panic if were 0-12 going into Buffalo. We’ve got a tough schedule.

notthatnoise - September 12, 2010

Dawg Nuts - September 12, 2010
I wasn’t one of the guys who thought 8-8 but I reckon being ‘realistic’ includes showing competence for 60 minutes against Tampa Bay and KC.
skipkirk - September 12, 2010
This. I am highly disappointed b/c of who are opponent was, but not panicky.
bross09 - September 12, 2010
It’s not just 1 game, the Browns lose like this ALL THE TIME. How many times have we seen the Browns get a nice lead, only to panic down the stretch and lose closely.
I’m not the one who’s panicked, I said, the coaching staff/team panicked and started throwing the ball like they thought they were the ’99 Rams.
Do you work for the Browns? You sound like every article on clevelandbrowns.com – never admit there’s a problem.
And we’re ALWAYS in rebuilding mode – are any of you ever going to expect a little better?
HenryDawg - September 13, 2010
How many times did this happen last year? Everything that happened before last year has no bearing on this current Browns administration.
woodsmeister - September 13, 2010
THIS
bross09 - September 13, 2010
you can’t just “expect better” without reason. we have failed at rebuilding with multiple front offices. you can’t just expect a new management team to come in and say “This 4-12 team doesn’t need a rebuild, we’re going to the superbowl!”
notthatnoise - September 13, 2010
I thought we were throwing the ball quite a bit early in the game as well, so I don’t see that they panicked and started doing that, unless they panicked when they hit the field.
Also, clevelandbrowns.com article meet cleveland.com poster.
We always expect better. However the point is, most reasonable people don’t expect a complete turnaround the first game of the season of a new regime, I don’t think many people believe that change can happen that quickly. It’s going to take some work and it’s going to take some time. As of yet we don’t know how long, but I don’t think anyone expected it to take one offseason.
Villeslgr - September 13, 2010

dgcambridge - September 12, 2010
Fumbled snap maybe?
Villeslgr - September 12, 2010
I think it was a swing pass/screen type of thing
HenryDawg - September 12, 2010
Oh, Delhomme was being sacked, but right before he went down he flipped it behind the line of scrimmage to Watson, who happened to be standing there. Since it was a lateral, it counts as a 1 yard loss on a run.
Chris Pokorny - September 12, 2010
Thanks
dgcambridge - September 12, 2010
3rd and 9, we have it on our own 40 yard line. 8:43 left in the quarter. tight end ben watson catches it on the right side and gets tackled bye Geno Hayes at the 39 yard line for a 1 yard loss.
bross09 - September 12, 2010
No need to throw Delhomme under the bus. This was a team loss. It’s not Delhomme’s fault Hillis has fumblitis, the Browns have no WR threat or Haden played like a rookie.
The Licensed Pessimist - September 12, 2010
I thought Haden played well. His coverage on the touchdown wasn’t horrible, it was a perfect pass and catch. Also maybe having more than 3 corners on the roster would have allowed them to get a breather once in awhile, especially in that Tampa heat.
HenryDawg - September 12, 2010
Agree with you was impressed with both TJ Ward and Haden. Haden made several plays and the TD he had decent coverage more of a nice play kind of deal. Really think Jake shriveled up when we needed him but Daboll may of had a hand in it. Was really a strange 2nd half. Like we just started trying not to lose and stopped taking it to them.
realmccoy - September 12, 2010

Great there goes my fantasy team this week (in nonDBN league — in DBN, I am cleaning house and should win the league this week).
TheDriveStillHurts - September 12, 2010
I suppose it’s too early to panic, but is it too early to start looking forward to September 2011? Because I really don’t see how this team is going to win a single division game.
One upside is that for the most part the young DBs looked pretty good. Ward in particular had a nice break up against Wnslow, and even Adams (about whom I said, “WTF is Adams doing in there?!” early in the 1st qtr) did okay.
I guess I’m just determined to find a silver lining.
JustBob - September 12, 2010
Perhaps you missed Cincinnati unable to move the ball at all against a young Patriots team (with a REALLY young secondary).
I live in Atlanta and had to sit through probably the worse Pittsburgh offense I’ve seen since… our second game against them last year.
AFC North as a whole looked bad today, even though Pittsburgh won.
Michael Jay - September 12, 2010
why the frick couldn’t the Falcons take them today?
THAT i do not understand.
discoinferno083 - September 12, 2010
They couldn’t run the ball. Matt Ryan’s a fine quarterback, but he’s not ready to carry a team on his back.

dgcambridge - September 12, 2010

discoinferno083 - September 12, 2010
I think we’ve figured out why Arizona kept Anderson, no fear of him checking down, he’s chucking it.
Villeslgr - September 12, 2010
He’s got the best jump ball receiver in the game to throw. I’d chuck it 40 times a game too if I had a WR with hands that good.
Michael Jay - September 12, 2010
definitely, that was my point, that with ML, they wouldn’t get the targets for Fitz to be successful
Villeslgr - September 12, 2010
I was looking at the box score and they had targets also. Fitz had 15 targets but only 3 catches. Did anyone watch the game (including you)? Was Fitz off or could DA just not hit him.
bross09 - September 12, 2010
I had family at the Rams game, they said that if the Cards had an accurate passer in the game it would have been a blowout.
Roger Dorn - September 12, 2010
yeah. figured. I just found it weird that Breaston was 7/7 with targets and Fitz was 3/15.
bross09 - September 12, 2010

rufio - September 13, 2010
haha.
i can’t imagine that Breaston is THAT much better than Fitz…there has to be something that doesn’t show up in the stats.
bross09 - September 13, 2010
Larry Fitz is learning about what DA will do to a receiver’s catch rate.
Roger Dorn - September 13, 2010
It was a little of both, they just couldn’t seem to get connected. DA did have some bad throws however in his defense, sort of anyways, his O-line didn’t give him a whole lot of help either, he got knocked around pretty good, he was sacked twice, knocked down almost a dozen times and had to hurry far too many throws, but hey, he didn’t throw any picks, he had a qb rating of 85 and most importantly he got the “W”, which is more than what we got out of Jake today.

true true. but not getting picked off and winning won’t always be this easy considering they were playing St. Louis.
Like I said to Dorn, Breaston was 7/7 with targets. was breatson only getting short screens or something?
bross09 - September 12, 2010
No way Breaston was only getting short passes. I think DA is only something like one out of ten on short passes. Mostly he rifles them in to the back of the intended receiver’s head.
JustBob - September 13, 2010
I just figured that could be a logical explanation of it…or maybe DA is so hard to predict, just looking at one game.
bross09 - September 13, 2010
Hahaha. Hilarious. That’s the DA we know and…hate.
Western Reserve - September 12, 2010
Jake threw 17 passes in the first half. When we’re playing that well defensively, run the ball and eat clock for crying out loud.
I’m not excusing Jake at all here. The offensive play calling was horrible. Our top 2 backs had 18 combined carried while our QB who was coming off a career low year was asked to throw 37 times? 20 times AFTER a bad INT on which he was hurt. Jake hobbled through the rest of that game and they still ask him to sling it.
Bad picks on Jake, but Daboll’s my goat of the game.
I was pretty pleased with the defense. I watched the whole game and only counted three really big plays given up, two long runs from Cadillac and their second TD. I doubt Matt Cassel’s going to lose any sleep this week, but the D wasn’t bad.
Daboll. Ugh.
Michael Jay - September 12, 2010
Its mind boggling
HenryDawg - September 12, 2010
Can I also point out that the Houston Texans, who had questions about their running game after losing rookie Ben Tate, ran up 260 yards on the ground against one of the best teams in the league.
And their QB, who was the Pro Bowl MVP last year, threw for over 4,000 yards, and has a top 5 receiver… threw only 17 passes.
The team they beat? With arguably the best QB of our generation? Had over 400 yards passing on FIFTY SEVEN attempts… and only ran the ball ten times.
Houston won with good, smart play calling, letting the backs and the line grind it out. We lost b/c apparently 6 preseason quarters was enough to convince the coaching staff that Delhomme’s prior 11 games were an anomaly and he should be throwing 30+ times a game.
Whatever.
Michael Jay - September 12, 2010
granted…that ‘one of the best teams in the league’ was 24th last year against the run.
bross09 - September 12, 2010
I do think the Texans will be really, really good this year. They have been making some shrewd drafts, and trades for awhile now, and the talent will mesh together this year.
realmccoy - September 12, 2010
To be fair, I think a lot of people here reacted the same way to those 6 preseason quarters.
But then, coaches are supposed to be smarter than us fans.
Chemo - September 12, 2010
Good post
Roger Dorn - September 12, 2010
any chance they were making Delhome throw, to work out the kinks?
only rationale i can think of.
someone on here made the comment about wanting to see Jake D. throw an int, just to see how he’d respond.
discoinferno083 - September 12, 2010
That’s what preseason is for.
No, the feeling was since he had success early, keep the ball rolling. No idea on using your running game to wear a defense down and chew up the clock when you have a lead.
Michael Jay - September 12, 2010
if that’s the case, we are f-ing retarded (looks at Daboll)
discoinferno083 - September 14, 2010
Vick looks better than Kolb thus far.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
Jut threw an absolutely LASER to Jeremy Maclin for a TD. Beautiful pass.
Too bad I benched Maclin for Desean Jackson… who has one catch. Urgh.
Michael Jay - September 12, 2010
I’m watching it too and I don’t know how I feel about this.
SpecialBrownie - September 12, 2010
Seems like a no-brain-er to me. Browns need to trade for Vick before Philly decides they want to keep him and trade the other guy who’s been no good.
:)
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
…
SpecialBrownie - September 12, 2010
Ha, this was a joke, right?
StuckInPa - September 12, 2010
Yes.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
12 of 17, 124 yards, 1 TD, 110.9 rating
77 yards rushing on 7 carries.
This guy should be the Eagles starter.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
Meh.
It’s one game.
Kolb threw for 300 yards in both of his starts last year while Vick looked like absolutely garbage aside from, ironically, the game against the Falcons.
Michael Jay - September 12, 2010
He was far out of shape last year and was thrown into the system.
SpecialBrownie - September 12, 2010
Yeah, he did come off of several years of no football at all.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
Which is why I think declaring him the starter after one decent half of football is flat out stupid.
Michael Jay - September 12, 2010
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
Rodgers threw another pick. COME ON, DUDE!
emily522 - September 12, 2010
Glad I didn’t draft AR.
SpecialBrownie - September 12, 2010
He was my keeper pick. And it’s one game with 2 INTs. He’ll still be a top QB this season. He had some games like that last season, too.
emily522 - September 12, 2010
He’s got 14.7 points, if it ended right now, that’s a respectable fantasy score from a QB. But he’ll get even more points.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
On ESPN he only has 12.
emily522 - September 12, 2010
ESPN’s scoring system is inferior.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
I’m not big on Yahoo!’s, though. CBS is the best.
StuckInPa - September 12, 2010
Correction, the “Fantasy Football Fisticuffs brought to you by Simmsinns” system is the best. It’s a scoring system that has been tweaked over a few seasons for an 8-man league. One major difference is return yard points, more negative scoring, more points for shutout, several other various tweaks.
The system has worked flawlessly for 2 seasons now.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
It’s not so much the scoring, more like the system itself. But you get return yard points? I wasn’t aware.
StuckInPa - September 12, 2010
Some custom leagues have it, including the $ league I commish (described above). The DBN Fan league doesn’t though, I decided to keep that as Yahoo! default because the team managers (such as yourself) obviously weren’t aware of all the edits I made if I used my custom one.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
is that what is in the unofficial DBN league?
bross09 - September 12, 2010
No, DBN Fan league has a Yahoo! Sports default scoring system. What I describe above is the system for the $ league I’m in, and commish.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
Oh well.
emily522 - September 12, 2010
I think the Browns should have stuck Hillis in spite of the fumbles. It is like after the second fumble he had to sit in the dog house for a while. The offense came to a total halt at that time and I think that lost the game for the Browns.
Brownsyup - September 12, 2010
I agree. If not Hillis, the running game in general. Was Davis even activated for this game?
Michael Jay - September 12, 2010
LOL… everyone is watching the Philly game and posting here like a game thread. It is a good game. GO VICK!
Brownsyup - September 12, 2010
I think we’re all just happy real football is back on television. I know I am.
Michael Jay - September 12, 2010
I’m glad I didn’t play the guy in my league who has Adrian Foster this week. I’m still up by 15 with Austin and Cowboys D left to go.
emily522 - September 12, 2010
Woo Foster!
StuckInPa - September 12, 2010
The guy who has Foster in my league also has Wes Welker & Tom Brady.
And I’m playing him next week. :-(
Michael Jay - September 12, 2010
At least you didn’t play him this week.
Bernie19Kosar - September 13, 2010
Awww Vick should have ran it on that one.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
Old Vick would’ve. He’s said in interviews that he’s been working the “first two options gone… RUN!” mentality out of his head.
Michael Jay - September 12, 2010
Agreed.
StuckInPa - September 12, 2010
Works for me. Akers is on my fantasy team.
emily522 - September 12, 2010
/agree. Vick had a chance…
Brownsyup - September 12, 2010
Oh. Of course. Sunday Ticket to go is working now.
emily522 - September 12, 2010
So I’m not sure if anyone saw Calvin Johnson’s TD called back. I call some serious BS on that, though. Screwed me in both my leagues.
StuckInPa - September 12, 2010
Ridiculous call.
TheDriveStillHurts - September 12, 2010
You’re selfish.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
Hey now, I love a cushion. For all I know Romo could go nuts tonight.
StuckInPa - September 12, 2010
Besides, I have another league thats closer.
StuckInPa - September 12, 2010
Nah man, that one’s over.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
Reply fail, meant for the above post.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
I figured. You’re probably right, but crazier things have happened.
StuckInPa - September 12, 2010
True. I’ve seen some crazy things happen in fantasy matchups.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
No, it’s not.
SpecialBrownie - September 12, 2010
You’re done SB.
StuckInPa - September 12, 2010
It’s in the rule book, but the wording is so stupid “the catch must be completed in the process of the catch” that it’s totally ambiguous. Basically, Johnson shouldn’t have used the ball to stop himself from falling. It’s the right call, but a bad bad rule. Much like the tuck rule and the Tom Brady diving at the knees rule.
Michael Jay - September 12, 2010
Stop him from falling? He landed on his ass with the ball clearly in his hand. If he was anywhere else on the field it would have been a catch. Same rules should apply in the endzone as the rest of the field.
StuckInPa - September 12, 2010
I agree. It’s an awful rule. If you have NFL Network, tune in to their ref review show (I think it’s on Tuesday). I guarantee that play comes up in discussion.
Michael Jay - September 12, 2010
Uh, wut? Possession is possession anywhere on the field.
SpecialBrownie - September 12, 2010
My point is that he had possession.
StuckInPa - September 12, 2010
Did they get rid of the make a football move component?
Villeslgr - September 12, 2010
Does anyone like Delhomme at all?
Can’t you all see he is a mistake? His pass at the end of the half for a 35 year old starter is inexcusable. He is scared and you will see the interceptions will mount and bring down the rest of the team even more.
champion64 - September 12, 2010
I like Delhomme.
golanbatrac - September 12, 2010
I got overzealous in the last thread but I like Delhomme
SpecialBrownie - September 12, 2010
He looked decent until that first interception and then he started to play like a rookie. I’ll reserve judgment but you have to be able to protect a lead better than that.
Brownsyup - September 12, 2010
Well, to be fair, he also seemed to be injured. He already has a weak arm, asking him to throw off a bum foot doesn’t help.
Frankly, Wallace should have been in there and we should have been running the ball more. I blame his second half poor performance on the coaches for not managing the game better.
However, unlike the Brown’s employees that comment here, that first int was just pathetic for a veteran and makes you have to question the wisdom of signing Jake and worse, paying him a ton of money when Carolina already was and he could have been had for a song..
HenryDawg - September 13, 2010
Sorry, don’t see any openings for you.
Villeslgr - September 13, 2010
there are all kinds of things wrong with this post, but I’ll just stick to a couple.
We are not paying him a ton of money. even if we were, who cares? it’s not like there’s a salary cap, and it’s not like our owner has a self-imposed spending limit (if only he owned the indians!).
He could not have been had for a song. He would have been perfectly ok going home to NO to be a backup on a great team. If we wanted him, we had to pay him.
notthatnoise - September 13, 2010
Fact: Carolina is paying Delhomme more than Cleveland this season.
rufio - September 14, 2010
If he would have been happier in NO as a backup he should have done it. Can you name any other team in the league that wanted him as a starter?
Yeah Carolina is paying him more, which is why we didn’t need to, and if money was no object then why was signing Cribbs to a decent contract such a BFDrama?
Love for you to tell me what else is sooo wrong with my post. Any professional review of the game has reiterated the problem was with coaching and JD was clearly injured. Don’t like the jab about people here defending the coaches and FO decisions no matter what? Sorry, cry to mommy about it. Its not true for everyone here, but the commenters clearly go out of their way to avoid saying anything negative about Mangini, as if its cliche and its above them.
So pelase, do tell me what yoiur problem is?
HenryDawg - September 15, 2010 via mobile
He really hates typos.
If you read carefully, we have a number of Mangini opponents, and an army of people who would like to see Daboll gone as of yesterday. Holmgren, he has a lot of general goodwill around here though.
RelapsingDawgCatcher - September 15, 2010
Because Cribbs had four years left on his deal? Because Holmgren had more pressing matters (like hiring a Coach and GM) to deal with in his first couple of weeks on the job than negotiating a contract with a player who had four years left on his current contract?
Take your pick.
A year ago I was the lone voice in the DBN wilderness singing the praises of Mangini. There may have been a few others, but, by and large, the consensus was that Mangini was the wrong guy for the job. Since that time, a few things have happened. Mangini dug us out of ‘cap hell’, replacing overpriced underperforming players with under priced overperforming players. He added numerous picks to our 2010 draft. He led a team that had every reason to pack it in after a 1 – 11 start to four straight victories. Mike Holmgren took a good long look at Mangini’s year with the team and determined that his performance as coach and as GM had earned him the right to continue coaching the Browns.
That’s a lot of positives. The last, the Holmgren vetting, played the largest role in changing the opinions of the people who post here. It isn’t beneath anyone to kvetch about Mangini, but when a person who knows waaaay more about football than anyone on this blog; who has taken two teams to the superbowl; and who has been a consistent winner for three decades comes in and decides to retain Mangini, any intelligent person takes a step back, admits that Holmgren knows a hell of a lot more about all of this than they ever will, and figures that if Holmgren says that Mangini is the right guy for the job, that maybe Mangini should get the benefit of the doubt.
golanbatrac - September 15, 2010
Well spoken. I think as a 1 – 2 punch, those two facts are extremely significant to a lot of us who might have been on the fence.
RelapsingDawgCatcher - September 15, 2010
I personally think Mangini take a lot of unneeded flak. It was brought up before that Mangini goes 9-7 when Favre implodes the team and gets axed, Ryan goes 9-7 with 2 gifted games, sneaks into the playoffs, and is some kind of cult hero.
Hell, I’d kill for a coach to go 28-20 in a three year stretch here.
North Coast Flea - September 15, 2010
First of all, the Cribbs contract stuff started before Holmgren even got there, so my response to the original statement that money is no object for Lerner is still valid. Now if you had said nobody should pay a KR a lot of money, I would have bought that argument, but the “too busy” routine doesn’t sell.
Ill agree that Mangini deserves some credit for some things, but the fact is that this team will always be handcuffed into getting players he can deal with. Its not that I want jerk players, just a leader who can handle top level talent, not just rookies and other peoples backups. That said, I have every right to criticize his in game management last week.
With all the experience out there I would love to see what a coach like Marty, gruden or dungy could do with our guys.
HenryDawg - September 15, 2010 via mobile
Lerner doesn’t write the contracts, and our past regimes have no bearing on this one.
North Coast Flea - September 15, 2010
This, then would be your pick.
rufio - September 16, 2010
not true. He has his type of player he likes to bring in (‘mangini guys’ if you will) but just because a guy isn’t one doesn’t mean we won’t bring him in, or keep him if he is already here. If a guy can contribute in the field and not cause problems in the locker room, he will stay. Look at Shaun Rogers. their relationship started with a terrible first impression, but rogers is still here, even after getting caught with guns. he is here because he is a top level talent who doesn’t cause locker room problems. Matt roth is another guy who can be a headcase, but he also contributes.
the non-‘mangini guys’ who get cut, get cut because they do not produce all that well. In fact, guys who are ‘mangini guys’ don’t always stay on the team when they don’t produce (veikune comes to mind). And you seem to also forget that holmgren and heckert are also truly running the show and while mangini has input, he doesn’t sign the players.
bross09 - September 16, 2010
I’m a Mangini fan.
Villeslgr - September 15, 2010
I believe I was ok with Mangini, but not as the “czar” or coach/gm. I think the guy can coach, I don’t know if he is a Belichick/Fisher/Cowher/Parcells/Walsh kind of guy.
rufio - September 16, 2010
I, in fact started posting right after the season so i was extremely anti-mangini then, even after those wins. I just wanted him gone. but I have changed my tune.
bross09 - September 16, 2010
The drama behind the Cribbs deal wasn’t that he deserved more (because everyone agreed that he did) it was the fact that he still had several years left on his deal.
Not a good precedent, and not a good thing to be doing while people with less time left on their deals are wondering why they aren’t getting paid.
rufio - September 16, 2010
Joe Thomas likes Delhomme.
BrownDawg1409 - September 12, 2010
checkmate.
Dawg Nuts - September 12, 2010
He’s ok. We’ll win a couple more games with him this year than we would have with Quinn, DA, or McCoy. But he’s a filler while the team is built.
dgcambridge - September 12, 2010
I like Delhomme. I don’t want him here for many years, but I like him for this year and probably until we can get the young QB in here that we want. I don’t believe Delhomme is a mistake because I don’t think anyone in the organization believes that he is a solution for anything except:
DA + BQ = shit
DA +BQ = shit < JD = not much of a passing threat + old
Villeslgr - September 12, 2010
I have a newspaper meeting at 7:30… I’ll give myself 10 minutes to get there b/c I want to watch more of the game.

SpecialBrownie - September 12, 2010
No, I don’t.
StuckInPa - September 12, 2010
Werd. I need a 60 yarder to JerMichael Finley… (run after catch, it can happen!) to have a chance in my league.
Followed by a Vick 90 yard bomb to Desean Jackson.
Michael Jay - September 12, 2010
I’ll take a little of that DeSean Jackson action.
golanbatrac - September 12, 2010
My WRs suck. Steve Smith (NYG) only had 4 points.
emily522 - September 12, 2010
Not so great QB play, there.
StuckInPa - September 12, 2010
Hakeem Nicks got 3 of the TD passes.
emily522 - September 12, 2010

I’m outta here. Don’t want to be late!
emily522 - September 12, 2010
I’m aware that I’m totally jumping the gun here, but I’d absolutely love to see a renewal of the Vick of old. He was such an exciting player to watch, so very entertaining. He alone made game that were otherwise uninteresting worth watching.
I really hope this isn’t a fluke.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
HAhahaha, I’ve got Rodgers in my money league, but I’m loving this.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
It probably is. I don’t see the Eagles benching Kolb. But could you imagine if after coming in last year during Donovan F.’s injury that Kolb could see Vick shine in his place because of his injury (hearing concussion)?
Villeslgr - September 12, 2010
4 and 10 for Bradford and the Rams, at the Arizona 20..
dgcambridge - September 12, 2010

dgcambridge - September 12, 2010
You’re kidding me. After the pick, Tim Hightower (on my fantasy team, the Man Genies) loses the fumble.
dgcambridge - September 12, 2010
I think we are just all tired
Tired of the same things going on. We keep getting promises things are changing but really it seems the same to me. No stars, no real talent. I hate this. I have been a fan for too long to keep hoping on the hopeless. Tampa is not a good football team and we gave them a win. Delhomme is the wrong direction to go. So where do we turn, honestly what do we do now?

dgcambridge - September 12, 2010
Who is this we?
Villeslgr - September 12, 2010
How much prozac do you people eat that you’re not frustrated?
HenryDawg - September 13, 2010
who said anything about not being frustrated? I’m frustrated as hell that we lost that game. we should have won. But the fact is the browns played well for 2-3 quarters and dominated TB for long stretches. They didn’t win, and that sucks. But right now, playing well is more important than winning.
notthatnoise - September 13, 2010
I wouldn’t mind seeing more wildcat. That was a big factor in winning those final games last season.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
I’d like to see us run the ball more.
golanbatrac - September 12, 2010
Yeah, how about we give Harrison more than 9 carries.
dgcambridge - September 12, 2010
I felt like we tried to but it wasn’t working out. 2 fumbles doesn’t help. Still, more running with Delhomme at QB is not something I’m opposed to.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
I honestly think Mack struggles a bit against a four man front. Maybe that had something to do with the limited carries / success in the run game.
golanbatrac - September 12, 2010
I’m in a elimination league, and several people picked the Cardinals.
dgcambridge - September 12, 2010
Not Coaches Fault
Let’s face it, Delhomme was terrible all day. You cannot coach your way through that. The OL was stellar and Delhomme didn’t make the throws. So disappointed.
gobrowns2010 - September 12, 2010
not Daboll’s fault?
really?
discoinferno083 - September 12, 2010
I believe Delhomme will have 2 or 3 TERRIBLE outings this year. I hope this was one of them.
Brownsyup - September 12, 2010
so after delhomme started to not be good, its his fault they made him throw 20 more passes?
bross09 - September 12, 2010
Leonard Weaver has a torn ACL, out for the season. One of the leagues best FBs.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
And Derek Anderson posts a win. There just ain’t no justice. The Browns fan’s worst possible outcome? DA takes Arizona to the Superbowl where they meet the Quinn-lead Broncos in a double-overtime thriller. OUCH!
Brownsyup - September 12, 2010
Sorta like what Indians fans had to endure when C.C. Sabathia and Cliff Lee pitched against each other in the World Series.
Michael Jay - September 12, 2010
X-actly.
Brownsyup - September 12, 2010
Except those guys were actually good players.
Villeslgr - September 12, 2010
I’d watch that. I’m not a fan of either QB, but I LOVE double-overtime thriller Super Bowls!
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
Tonight, DA is happy and we are not.
If the Browns were a good team, they could win with DA.
Unfortunately, the Browns are not a good team and Delhomme does not help.
Drafting Quinn and then McCoy is not making the Browns any better.
Hillis may help the Browns more than Quinn, but that is not saying much.
palcal - September 12, 2010
DA seriously? His team won in spite of his inaccuracy today.
Roger Dorn - September 12, 2010
The Cards trade for Vick and they win the West.
golanbatrac - September 12, 2010
You have the same man crush I do after that game tonight?
Admittedly, it’s just hope at this point.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
I don’t think Reid would go for that. He would probably want alot in return.
Villeslgr - September 12, 2010
Tonight, DA beat the worst team in the league by a 3 point margin. next week, reality hits.
bross09 - September 12, 2010
they barely beat a team that was the worst team in football last year. I think its WAAAAAAAAAAY too early to predict super bowl. Lets see what he is like against a competent D.
bross09 - September 12, 2010
If any week they should move the damn ball it is next week. I will give him one more try. Let me be the one to start it. Jake the Fake needs to go. Bring in Seneca Wallace

Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
Mike Leach
Villeslgr - September 12, 2010
ohhhh…I was google imaging every single browns QB I could think of.
bross09 - September 12, 2010
He’s been with us 2 times already. Great college QB, nothing in the NFL.
Brownie's Year - September 12, 2010
yeah. I know. I was thinking of guys who made our 53 man. He was a minicamp guy twice.
bross09 - September 12, 2010
He looks like a Tom Brady spawn, where one of his ancestors mated with one of Jay Cutler´s ancestors.
mooncamping - September 13, 2010
Hated the game plan. I know Delhomme had a nice preseason, but let’s not get carried away here. We should be running more than passing every single game with our offensive line until we get a top 10-15 QB. Delhomme is going to throw interceptions when we pass that many times. 9 carries for Harrison? I know the majority of his yards came on one carry, but that is the reason we give it to him, he can break plays open. That number should be minimum 15.
Roger Dorn - September 12, 2010
I agree, though it’s worth noting that the more we pass, the more Massaquoi and Robiskie have an opportunity to develop. Developing these two is maybe more important than winning now.
golanbatrac - September 12, 2010
As a Jeff Fisher enthusiast, I would be perfectly happy letting the receivers learn if they are fortunate enough to get a pass or 2.
Roger Dorn - September 12, 2010
so we just air it out to develop our WRs instead of attempting to make a gameplan that can win us a game? develop them in practice dammit.
bross09 - September 12, 2010
he’s just looking at the silver lining here, no reason to get carried away.
notthatnoise - September 13, 2010
I figured. the dammit was supposed to be more in jest, and not a serious bout of cursing.
bross09 - September 13, 2010
I completely agree. We picked up a marginal improvement at QB, not Peyton Manning. We’ll never win with Jake throwing 30 times. And I don’t understand why Mangini has no faith in Harrison.
Chemo - September 12, 2010
yeah, this. if the browns have another wonky gameplan next week in kansas city, brian daboll could be history.
davus - September 12, 2010
against kansas city
davus - September 12, 2010
I’ll expand some more on this in my full review, but we lost this game because we had a poor offensive gameplan at several points of the game. We have to remember our expectations for Delhomme — a quarterback who understood that we would be a good running team, and he would be counted upon to make some clutch throws on a third down or a playaction here and there.
He looked bad on many of his 37 throws, but it’s not his fault that the pass was called that often. We have to go back and remember that we can have the same offensive gameplan we had over the last four games last year, with the exception that if we do decide to throw, we have a competent quarterback. Instead, we ignored what brought us success at the end of last season and put Delhomme in a poor situation.
Chris Pokorny - September 12, 2010
Yes.
Roger Dorn - September 12, 2010
Do you honestly think he can perform to make this team perform offensively so we can be in most games, or are you afraid it could unravel quickley with him at quarterback?
champion64 - September 12, 2010
I’ll reiterate what Chris said. We lost because of a poor gameplan and a complete lack of ability to improv and adjust on the fly. We also abandoned the run when we had a lead.
Daboll’s last two jobs were WR coach for the Patriots and quarterbacks coach for the Jets. I’m not surprised he has zero concept of how to scheme a running gameplan. It’s even more befuddling given what we were doing at the end of last season.
I think, if we’re MUCH more balanced on offense with a slight lean towards the run, Jake can keep the mistakes down and stay competitive in games. He, like Cutler, just compounds mistakes when he’s asked to throw a lot in a game.
I still think he’s an upgrade over DA and Quinn, but that’s not saying much.
Michael Jay - September 12, 2010
Agree in full
Roger Dorn - September 12, 2010
very good point about Daboll. I would like to see how good OCs that were QB/WR coaches do at making a gameplan for the run. Likewise, I would like to see how a RB coach does at gameplanning a passing game…and furthermore what position coach translates into the best OC (if there is one)
bross09 - September 12, 2010
Did you miss the end of last year?
I don’t disagree that we need a heavy dose of running the ball, but Daboll knows how. He just failed to do it this game.
rufio - September 13, 2010
I think we were really well balanced in the first half and Daboll was calling a really good game. However, I’m going to go back to what I said earlier, which is that when the Bucs got close, we panicked and started to play like we were down by 20. I blame this reaction on Mangini and Daboll who are like the anti-Tressel or anti-Dungy, (the type of coaches a young team could use).
HenryDawg - September 13, 2010
How in the hell is Mangini the anti-tressel? they both love to run the ball and play defense. I think they got too scared of our fumbles, and thought we could maintain success in the air for the entire game. obviously we couldn’t.
notthatnoise - September 13, 2010
It is easy to say that a playcaller was “balanced” when he had the lead and was scoring. Not that I have watched the tape yet, I’d just like you to bring something to the table to back this up.
rufio - September 14, 2010
Man that Lions loss seemed like a typical Browns loss. Losing due to some ridiculous rule that no one has ever heard of.
Roger Dorn - September 12, 2010
I just saw that replay for the first time on NBC. Terrible call.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
This.
StuckInPa - September 12, 2010
I’d be in complete meltdown mode if that happened to the Browns.
Roger Dorn - September 12, 2010
Agreed. A great throw and catch f-ed up by a bs rule.
StuckInPa - September 12, 2010
I’ve heard the rule, but never actually seen it occur in that manner
Villeslgr - September 12, 2010
I think a typical Browns loss and a typical Lions loss probably have a lot in common.

StuckInPa - September 13, 2010
And Braylon Edwards still sucks.
BrownDawg1409 - September 12, 2010
I did not get to see all of the 2nd half here in Pennsylvania, Why did they stop giving the ball to Harrison, was it that they had to change the game plan because of field position which wasn’t great late, or was it because he was not really performing?
champion64 - September 12, 2010
I traded Miles Austin (& Thomas Jones) for Ryan Matthews (& Joseph Addai).
I’m interested in the next two game to see who wins the trade, personally I’m guessing not myself but I was desperate for a RB at the time.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
I need 20 fantasy points from Dmac. Uhhh yeah, I lose that one too.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
Lot of positives today. Really pleased with the play of TJ Ward and Joe Haden. Secondary unbelievably improved. Defense brought pressure as Ryan promised. Would suggest we use more Wildcat or Cyclone formations, Jake just chucking and ducking will prolly not end well for us.
realmccoy - September 12, 2010
Liking Ward a lot.
Roger Dorn - September 12, 2010
Yep Hayden looked good giving up that Late TD…. and TB WR’s are lower tier…even KC’s are better.
Red-Right-88 - September 13, 2010
The WR had nothing to do with that TD. It was all Freeman.
SpecialBrownie - September 13, 2010
Haden had good coverage, it was a perfect throw and catch. You can’t stick a rookie out there with no safety help and not expect that to happen once in awhile.
HenryDawg - September 13, 2010
perfect offense beats perfect defense every time. (not saying haden was perfect on the play, but you get the point)
notthatnoise - September 13, 2010
Obviously if he were perfect the pass would have been broken up, but regardless he was right there with the receiver. Your right, the perfect throw and catch will beat man coverage most times.
Kimble_79 - September 14, 2010
Look at what happen to Kyle Wilson of the Jets against the ravens Monday night. I’m glad we drafted J.Haden and T.J Ward

I’m playing Irish Chop this week in our fake DBN league. I’m winning and my QB and RBs haven’t played yet.
CHAMPIONSHIP
Brownie's Year - September 12, 2010
Haha, fake DBN league. I actually like it. It would have been awesome if we all chose names of the regulars that were picked for the real DBN league. Then pretended to be them with our smack talk, mocking them as exaggerated caricatures. I think that would have been pretty funny.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010

Brownie's Year - September 12, 2010
Its pretty much over for me and brown note. There is still 1/4 left in the game and he has portis and felix jones. However, he is 32 points behind now. He better hope baltimore D pitches a shutout with about 7 sacks a couple INTs and a couple D/ST touchdowns. that is the only way I can lose at this point (knock on wood)
bross09 - September 12, 2010
I haven’t checked all our matchups yet, but I’ll get to it later tonight.
Brownie's Year - September 12, 2010
yeah. Some last I checked were blowouts. Funny enough, there were 2 people who voted on every single matchup and whether it would be a win or loss. There was only one time they both agreed on who would win. My matchup and they voted against me. maybe b/c its me, they doubt me…whatever. my team is legit.
I checked and I am 3rd so far this week in overall points (just a point less than special peoples) and only 2 teams with the potential to pass me (your team and Aussie browns who still have rivers).
Btw, i am calling it right now…you win. After this game, Irish chop has no more players and you are actually a few points ahead. Unless roy williams magically pulls something out or they start handing the ball off to larry johnson, you have it in the bag. you still have your top 2 RBs to play and BE.
bross09 - September 12, 2010
Plus I still have Flaco to play. I know It’s in the bag.
Brownie's Year - September 12, 2010
oh. I didn’t even catch that. You might finish with the most overall points. you didn’t have Arian foster or Tom Brady. Besides welker, none of your guys had ridiculous performances, they just all had very good games (plus its a good team)
bross09 - September 12, 2010
I didn’t think I would win. Go to our message board, Chop is pissed off. LOL
Brownie's Year - September 12, 2010
lol…
Just looking at the espn projections you would win. granted, thats not everything. However,
Welker/Jamaal Charles/BE>>>>>>>>>>>>>Larry Johnson/Roy Williams/Santana Moss.
Plus, for the rest of the skill positions, I would give you a tiny edge.

Sweet. Not sure if Spiller will do anything this year.
Brownie's Year - September 12, 2010
I hope he does.
emily522 - September 12, 2010
who knows if anyone can do anything with that O-Line. Personally, i think Fred Jackson may end up turning out to be the best fantasy option in that backfield and I got him as a steal (he did have the most fantasy points this week)
bross09 - September 12, 2010
I’m in two leagues and passed on Spiller twice. I just don’t know what all the hype is about. There’s a reason Davis started over him in college. Browns have the better of the two.
Brownie's Year - September 13, 2010
2 things
a) I just remembered I had a dream that the browns played James Davis yesterday and he won us the game.
b) I agree. I think he is an excellent player and very talented, but I think he will likely be just an upgraded version of reggie bush. Granted, I think he will probably be better than bush, but even though reggie is a solid player, many people do call him a bust.
He is an excellent complementary piece, but not what you build the offense around. He is a home run threat, a big hitter. he is the kind of piece you get when you have more pieces in place. IMO, the best place for him would have been SFO. San Fran has a young, talented O-Line. they also have a reliable 2 down back who can take the load of the carries. They went out and got Brian westbrook for the 3rd down plays. SFO would be beast with him and Gore.
bross09 - September 13, 2010
You’re right, absolutely. It’s the fact that he plays for Buffalo.
Brownie's Year - September 13, 2010
yep. sorry for the ramble…I just started thinking about how terrible of a draft pick he was for buffalo.
bross09 - September 13, 2010
I bet Dallas still wins though.
Brownie's Year - September 12, 2010
Delhomme showed poise and made some great throws that I haven’t seen a Cleveland QB make in years. He could take this team to the next level if he had the support around him and we relied heavy on the run
The Licensed Pessimist - September 12, 2010
This is the key. I agree Delhomme could take us to some wins if we don’t ask this much of him.
Roger Dorn - September 12, 2010
This I agree with.
emily522 - September 12, 2010
Not even mad anymore. Only week 1 and we still have some bugs. Jake was fine. The line wasn’t great.
Brownie's Year - September 12, 2010
I’m with you there. I was pretty upset at first, but I got over it. The loss brought be back down to earth. I should have known expecting more than 3 wins was out of the question with this schedule.
I think Jake was fine up until the first INT. Overall, not so much.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010

Brownie's Year - September 12, 2010

realmccoy - September 12, 2010
This made me laugh.
North Coast Flea - September 13, 2010
For about an hour after the loss I was ready to quit watching football. Then I remembered I had low expectations for the season, and have accepted it. We will win a few games, it’s just this type of game that needs to be automatic before we can really be competitive.
Roger Dorn - September 12, 2010
Indeed. I have a feeling the games we do win are going to be somewhat random.
Simmsinns - September 12, 2010
I’m fine now. Game wasn’t that bad, it brought me off my Browns high.
SpecialBrownie - September 12, 2010
Yep. If the Browns can’t win games against teams like this, then they are not competitive for the year, especially in our division. Two things are troubling beyond the fact that we don’t have a lot of top tier players: the decision to bench Hillis in the second half and why Delhomme was left in the game after he hurt his foot when Wallace is not that big of a downgrade… This and the clock management at the end of the game is a little troubling with respect to coaching.
Brownsyup - September 13, 2010
I have no problem with benching Hillis. Drop the ball, sit on the bench. We have other running backs.
woodsmeister - September 13, 2010
I have a problem with it.
They were more of less not his fault, they were just very good plays to get the ball out. He was our power rusher and it’s dumb to completely write him out and also to kill his confidence. I’m annoyed we didn’t use Davis but that’s besides the point.
SpecialBrownie - September 13, 2010
I have more of a problem that we didn’t stick with the running game and let Delhomme throw so many times.
RelapsingDawgCatcher - September 13, 2010

Brownie's Year - September 12, 2010
I’m no football expert but i’ve noticed that whenever Miles makes a catch he rarely gets tackled until he has a chance to make a move. He always seems to catch the ball and make a move at the same time (guess he’s not looking the ball in).
If he can turn and make moves that quickly I would imagine that would lead to him getting open.

Brownie's Year - September 12, 2010
My thoughts:
1. Don’t understand what we were doing on offense. When we are damn near 2-1 in pass to run ratio when we lead 85% of the game, I am at a loss for words. We should punish on the ground. After going up 14-3, with 5:35 left in the second quarter, we ran the ball 11 times. 11 times in 35 minutes. What. The. $^#&@*#$(?
2. Delhomme’s TD pass should have been an INT. A capable safety (not the ghost of Sean Jones) wouldn’t have taken a God awful route. Looks good in the paper, but a dangerous throw that won’t get by Reed and Polamolulululu.
3. Tampa Bay did an awesome job of covering kicks. Cribbs never seemed to have a chance.
4. Marcus Bernard continues to be the only player who can rush the passer one on one. He has to be more involved. Also, Barton is a freaking mummy out there and was absolutely torched by Freeman on his 30+ yard scamper.
5. I am falling in love with Joe Haden. The TD he gave up was a perfect pass, almost no one could have defended that. He looks quicker and he seems to be breaking on the ball faster. His hands are fast.
6. Our DB’s tackle and they tackle well. Granted one game, but we didn’t see long YAC that I have become accustomed to.
7. We should have beaten Tampa. If we are going to take the next step in getting better, games like this are ones we need to close out. Ten point leads against bad football teams need to be locks.
Bernie19Kosar - September 13, 2010
All of this. Was going to do a mini recap on my thoughts, but you hit all my points.
I’m really at a loss about Daboll. It really makes me think Holmgren is a little too hands off. No way he accepts this as a competent offensive gameplan.
Ryan Kelsey - September 13, 2010
The really frustrating thing is that at the end of last season it felt like this team and franchise had discovered an attitude and personality of running the ball down people’s throats.
Today I didn’t see that. It seemed like we wanted to be some cutesy, passing team.
Know thyself Mangini.
Bernie19Kosar - September 13, 2010
…and the run it down people’s throats was working. Harrison burst of a nice run. when hillis had the ball in his hands (and not on the ground) he was an absolute beast. and maybe give james davis a handoff or two just to see what happens. Lets not forget that Cribbs can run the ball effectively out of the backfield.
Overall, not only was it too much passing, but overall bland playcalling. Not enough wildcat with cribbs (I think only 4 plays from wildcat/flash/cyclone at best…and one a quarter doesn’t cut it). lets get the ball into the hands of our biggest playmaker. It felt like a team still trying to work out in the preseason what personnel they had and make decisions on who gets what action.
bross09 - September 13, 2010
exactly. they bolstered that offensive line to run the ball and did the opposite. I am excited about a new QB but don’t go against what you drafted for. We moved up to get a running back and selected a WR in round 6. lets figure it out next week.
sean222 - September 13, 2010
something needs to be done. this seemed like someone trying to play madden who likes to air it out, but sucks at gameplanning a passing game.
bross09 - September 13, 2010
I am actually worried that Holmgren and Haskell (Holmgren’s offensive guru guy) were too hands-on and convinced Daboll that the passing game plan is the way to go.
Roger Dorn - September 13, 2010
Ditto.

RelapsingDawgCatcher - September 13, 2010
I’m thinking it’s a sign of it being the first game and a less than stellar opponent and the team using it as a chance to get a gauge of what we can and can’t do as an offense. I honestly feel they wanted to send a message to the team that when we get a lead we want to continue to attack and play like we expect to win instead of sitting on the ball trying not to lose. Not that that is smart, but i could see wanting to set an aggressive and confident tone for the season by using aggressive playcalling in your first game.
To go with that, i’m almost certain I could go back and find comments in past game threads of people complaining that we are playing not too lose. That was not personally directed at you Dorn.
Villeslgr - September 13, 2010
I could buy this more if this looked like a Holmgren offense. Holmgren isn’t against having a pounding running game.
Ryan Kelsey - September 14, 2010
It resembled a west-coast Holmgren style offense in my opinion.
Roger Dorn - September 14, 2010
I thought so too…more strategic passing and less running
Kimble_79 - September 14, 2010
I guess.
Ryan Kelsey - September 14, 2010
all of THIS.
It is nice to see good tackling and active hands by our secondary. there was at least once or twice when I was watching the game with my dad that I thought sheldon brown made the play, because it seemed like a veteran play, but it ended up being haden (like one pass where he got on top of the guy and just knocked it out).
I was very impressed with our safeties. I like having Adams in instead of Elam. Its a much better balance to Ward.
I am also falling in love with Benard. He was making plays everywhere and always in the QBs face. Him and Ward are 2 of my favorite players right now on D because they are just freakin’ everywhere (and on ward, he should be noted for getting the great pressure on Freeman to force the INT)
bross09 - September 13, 2010
All good points, the 2nd one in particular I had forgotten about. The safety (was it really Sean Jones) took one of the worst routes to the ball I have ever seen. He at the minimum should have been in the position to hit Massaquoi hard after the catch.
Roger Dorn - September 13, 2010
Actually, it seemed like all through the first half the announcers (at least whoever was covering the game on the Sunday Ticket) were commenting on passes that would have been picked off by a better defense.
JustBob - September 13, 2010
The Bucs were dead last against the run last year. Dead. Last. Whoever thought it’d be a good idea to throw 40 times against them and only run 20 times needs to be fired.
Michael Jay - September 13, 2010
granted…they were missing talib. even then, thats no excuse.
bross09 - September 13, 2010
If I remember correctly, the Browns RAN TO THE LEFT during their win streak behind Vickers.
The high percentage short passes seemed nice and serviceable during the preseason and 1st half.
And then mixing in the occasional long ball to Mo-Mass makes it exciting.
What happened to that plan?!?
tribe71 - September 13, 2010
No, we ran inside, outside, to the left and to the right.
rufio - September 13, 2010
to be fair, they added two D-tackles at #3 and $35 overall this year.
notthatnoise - September 13, 2010
However, brian price did not play much, due to him not being a starter and being sore. One player does not a competent run D make. maybe mcCoy alone raises them to 29th or 28th (the highest I can really see a rookie raising a D) but they would still be one of the worst run Ds.
bross09 - September 13, 2010
Well this weekend really sucked for football! WVU barely beat Marshall and the Brownies got smoked too.
/SIGH
Kimble_79 - September 13, 2010
try 0-2
alabama 24, penn st. 3
tampa 17, browns 14
“F” my existence.
Dawg Nuts - September 13, 2010
Atleast you were beat by a damn good team. WVU almost lost to Marshall. Marshall University! WTF? They destroyed our O-line the entire game.
Kimble_79 - September 13, 2010
yeah. that is not a good omen. its like being a cardinals fan because they barely beat the rams. at least DA isn’t the QB for west virginia.
bross09 - September 13, 2010
Ha, Penn St.
SpecialBrownie - September 13, 2010
Why is there a Penn State fan here? Just doesn’t seem logical.
Brownie's Year - September 13, 2010
I was wondering that, given the avatar we could possibly understand Syracuse. :)
Red-Right-88 - September 13, 2010
Probably the same reason there are Browns fans in Pennsylvania.
Villeslgr - September 13, 2010
Another Penn State fan here.
StuckInPa - September 13, 2010
well…you are StuckInPa…
bross09 - September 13, 2010
This is true. I also go to school there.
StuckInPa - September 13, 2010
oh…at Penn State another reason why it should be pretty obvious now. Nice school. I have a couple friends that go there (and if I remember correctly, I think we are about the same age)
bross09 - September 13, 2010
About. I should be a sophomore (I withdrew both semesters last year). And it’s a great school, especially when I pay 25%.
StuckInPa - September 13, 2010
yeah. it definitely is an excellent school. I should be a sophmore too but I am a freshman + (a couple credits away from being a sophmore)
bross09 - September 13, 2010
sorry we can’t all be as perfect as you SB.
Dawg Nuts - September 13, 2010
What makes him perfect? Rooting for Ohio St?
StuckInPa - September 13, 2010
sarcasm. he was the first one to pounce when i mentioned penn state. seems obviously driven by a “OSU is better than PSU” dig.
Dawg Nuts - September 13, 2010
No I know it was sarcasm. Just sayin.
StuckInPa - September 13, 2010
No, no, no.
KSU is better than PSU. Haha ;D
SpecialBrownie - September 13, 2010
I’d love to see that game.
StuckInPa - September 13, 2010
especially since I just found out that KSU has the worst record in the MAC in its history…of current members, they have the worst overall record. Surprising since through the time I have watched them, they have been solid and have put out some very nice NFL players.
bross09 - September 13, 2010
Why did you comment again?
SpecialBrownie - September 13, 2010
to point out that PSU would beat KSU and KSU historically has a surprisingly bad football team…though the last decade its been pretty solid.
bross09 - September 13, 2010
When KSU pays my way, it is much better than any other school.
SpecialBrownie - September 13, 2010
Ehh, I’m getting a PSU education for a quarter of the cost. I’m happy with that.
StuckInPa - September 13, 2010
Community college for free (and them some…books payed for, parking payed for). First couple years of school, a good community college is just as good as most public universities in the country.
I have found very little difference in the difficulty from when I went to Buffalo (which I also golt nice grants for like you seem to be getting) and the classes I am taking now. Granted, I am taking harder classes with harder teachers…but you can still get a similar education (at least for the first 2 yrs of school), the sucky part is the atmosphere and campus.
bross09 - September 13, 2010
I love the atmosphere at PSU. I can only imagine had we won that Bama game. Not sure if you watched, but PSU definitely screwed themselves in the red zone more than once.
StuckInPa - September 13, 2010
yeah. going to a big school with 20,000 kids, 300 clubs, and a D-1 football team to a Community College with 8 clubs and no sports and no campus life really sucks.
bross09 - September 13, 2010
Oh Bross…
SpecialBrownie - September 13, 2010
??
bross09 - September 13, 2010
This.
Dawg Nuts - September 14, 2010
i hope they aren’t this week, or else:
1. I’m getting epically drunk;
2. You will have the trump card against me in any argument.
Dawg Nuts - September 14, 2010
No Excuse
I cannot understand how these guys continue to drop the ball while running up the gut. Since little football players, that ball needs to be covered and the Browns threw 2 of them on the floor in scoring range. It is tough to swallow a loss when the other team was beat badly.
sean222 - September 13, 2010
Woke up this morning and Delhomme blows even more
champion64 - September 13, 2010
The door is that way

I agree he should be shown the door
champion64 - September 13, 2010
Back to the Barber pick.
Did anybody notice the tackle on the Barber pick?
Hillis flew past, I believe it was Robiskie, to make the tackle & save a pick 6.
Now Hillis didn’t have a much better line to the ball carrier nor was he 20 yards downfield already, he just ran past Robiskie or whoever it was, like he were a lineman & made the tackle.
That kinda concerns me,we’re talkin what,60 some yards here & our FB outran our wideouts….. :(
Groza - September 13, 2010
2 things:
1. Hillis is a RB, he’s fast.
2. Robiskie had run a route on the play, so he had already been running a while.
Also, I don’t have the replay, so I can’t really verify what exactly happened.
notthatnoise - September 13, 2010
Also Hillis seems more like the type of guy who’s going to want to go and tackle a guy after a turnover. I don’t usually see too many receivers making great efforts at getting tackles after turnovers.
Villeslgr - September 13, 2010
again, I will continue to stress that robiskie would never give less than 100% effort.
notthatnoise - September 13, 2010
I was thinking more about Hillis being nasty than Robo not giving effort. Should have phrased it better.
Villeslgr - September 13, 2010
more that hillis is the guy that gives 200%
bross09 - September 13, 2010
I see what you’re saying. I was a bit confused too. Hillis just could be that fast. He also shoved the guy on his face with no effort. Man Beast? I think so.
Brownie's Year - September 13, 2010
I was very impressed with Hillis’ speed (and effort) on that play. I wouldn’t have guessed he would be fast enough to catch Barber like that.
bbstirrd - September 13, 2010
granted, Rhonde barber isn’t a burner anymore.
bross09 - September 13, 2010
Yeah that’s a good point but Hillis may have been blocking or running a route himself before the pursuit.
Ronde is no spring chicken but to see Hillis come flying out of nowhere like that was impressive on his part.
I tried to google it but found no clips on it,I didn’t DVR the game unfortunately.
Groza - September 13, 2010
OK I finally found it.
The clip is 5 minutes long, our play we’re discussing is at 2:15.
Hillis threw a block & was standing roughly at the line of scrimmage.
So I guess after seeing this angle it makes some sense,I saw the multiple replay on TV from every other angle besides this one. LOL
http://www.youtube.com/v/0rMu96PqYtU
Groza - September 13, 2010
Stuff like that doesn’t take a whole bunch of talent. It’s just effort.
golanbatrac - September 13, 2010
Fantastic.
skipkirk - September 13, 2010
That play was awesome.
Villeslgr - September 13, 2010
I think that is forgivable on Robiskie’s end, Hillis doesn’t move past him until he dives.
notthatnoise - September 13, 2010
I flag this vid.
Brownie's Year - September 13, 2010
LOL
I flag the whole second half of the game.
Groza - September 14, 2010
OH COME ON BB/B19k/Chris! That was funny!
SpecialBrownie - September 13, 2010
fail?

i failed
Brownie's Year - September 14, 2010
After watching KC last night, I think we might be in trouble come this Sunday!!! Are we now looking at a 4-12 season?
BROWNS GREATEST SEASONS 1996 1997 1998 - September 14, 2010
No. 2 wins at best.
Brownie's Year - September 14, 2010
Disappoint does not even describe that game. We did what we’ve always done: We blew it. Defense fell apart, Delhomme kept throwing in coverage (even though some of the passes were caught), and we shot ourselves in the foot with turnovers. It was our game to lose, and lost we did.
