There won't be any Cleveland Browns training camp reports for Day 4, because Eric Mangini has called practice off. Tuesday was originally scheduled to be closed off to the public, but the team would've practiced in front of the media still. Mangini made the decision to just have the players be involved with meetings with the coaches instead, per the Plain Dealer.
Barry McBride over at the OBR noted that the media was told yesterday that practice would be canceled, but he wanted the media to keep it secret so he could surprise the players. Could this be another sign that Mangini is becoming a more player-friendly coach?
Mangini responded, with a chuckle, "I think I'm player-friendly every year."

So, with the day off, we can discuss some other news in football, such as that of veteran quarterback Brett Favre retiring for a third time, reportedly. Favre played for the Minnesota Vikings last year and took on the Browns in Week 1. While Cleveland sacked him four times, Favre was still efficient enough in victory.
Right now, I still don't buy into the announcement. I can easily imagine the Vikings trying to play hardball with a statement like, "Come on Favre, are you ready or not?" Then, Favre might respond with, "you know what, my ankle doesn't feel as good as I had hoped, so I'm going to have to retire." When that ankle feels better in a couple of weeks, what's going to stop Favre from giving Minnesota a call and then being inserted into the starting lineup Week 1?
You can follow the SB Nation stream on Favre here; the latest word is that in Brad Childress' press conference, he said that Favre did not tell him yet that he's not coming back. Mmmm hmmm.
Even though many of you aren't fond of Yahoo Sports' Jason Cole, he visited the Arizona Cardinals training camp yesterday and had this report on QB Derek Anderson:
There’s an old saying about quarterbacks I once heard from long-time NFL scout and executive Tom Braatz while I was in college. He said really good quarterbacks shouldn’t miss throws in practice. They should hit everything, particularly in seven-on-seven drills where there’s no pass rush.
That brings me to Cardinals backup QB Derek Anderson, who has a great arm and is a really good dude, the type of guy you cheer for because he’s funny and engaging. However, Anderson is also a Nuke LaLoosh thrower (not to mention that he’s a bit of a knucklehead, too). Anyway, during a series of five throws to receivers who were running skinny posts against air, Anderson missed badly twice.
Now, some people will defend Anderson, pointing out he was a Pro Bowler in 2007 with Cleveland. Yeah, but if you remember, his top three receivers that season were Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow and Joe Jurevicius. Each of them is at least 6-foot-3. Get the point? At least the good news for Anderson is that the Cardinals also have a lot of tall receivers.
Former Cleveland Browns receiver Donte Stallworth is off to a positive start with Baltimore, according to Ravens Insider:
So far, Stallworth has had an excellent camp. He has had several long catches for touchdowns, but also has run precise routs on the short ones. More importantly, he has shown great acceleration and keeps making yards after the catch, which was a problem for Ravens receivers last season.
Of course, some will say the receivers are competing against second-rate cornerbacks, but they can only play against the players who line up against them. According to several players, Stallworth had a strong offseason in the weight room and has re-dedicated himself to getting into the best shape possible.
The Browns will take the field for two practice sessions on Wednesday. The morning session will be from 8:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m, and the evening session will be from 5:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.

I won’t believe he’s officially retired until week 2.
North Coast Flea - August 3, 2010
he could still come back after their bye
HudBaby - August 3, 2010
I won’t believe he’s officially retired until he’s dead.
And even then, it’s kinda iffy.
BrownDawg1409 - August 3, 2010
Zombie Favre would still be like a little kid on the field, according to every announcer in the world.
notthatnoise - August 3, 2010
Zombie Ninja Favre would actually be pretty cool though.
BrownDawg1409 - August 4, 2010
Enthusiastically agreed. Hopefully by the time he passes, science will be able to make that happen.
Onyx Lightning - August 4, 2010 via mobile
we should have kept Stallworth, at least for this year.
BrutalMovement - August 3, 2010
He should send an apology to all Browns fans.
He was immature and disrespected the opportunity he had. He’s lucky to have a second chance. Unfortunately, he needed to go to another team for that opportunity. He burned all of his bridges here.
Spidey - August 3, 2010 via mobile
he made a gigantic mistake, to be sure, but how did he burn his bridges here? what did he say or do that would make cleveland fans hate him any more than other fans?
notthatnoise - August 3, 2010
Yeah, what you said.
Andrew Tolliver - August 3, 2010
Nothing, absolutely nothing.
North Coast Flea - August 3, 2010
exactly…its not so much what he said, but what he did. which is stated above
Kimble_79 - August 3, 2010
he ducked the Ravens twice with “practice injuries”. go back and look at his year in Cleveland, he conveniently was injured during every week of practice that involved a physical defense that year. PLEASE, go back and look at it!
L Train - August 3, 2010
What in the hell are you talking about?
The man made a terrible mistake that could have been avoided, yes but sought to amend his faults in every way possible. It was said the man was remorseful and cooperative whenever he could have been.
And even then, what the hell did he do to the Browns that would’ve made us hate him? Go to the Ravens?
SpecialBrownie - August 3, 2010
Dare I say this was worse than LBJ taking his talent to South Beach.
Chris Pokorny - August 3, 2010
“Burning bridges” is probably too string a term here. But he did nothing to live up to his contract and was a waste to the team.
Does anyone think he could have gotten a good opportunity to right his career here in Cleveland? He made a terrible mistake for which he took full responsibility; that’s all fine and good, but he did nothing to gain any respect as a football player while here in Cleveland.
And choosing to go to Baltimore could be considered a slap in our face.
Spidey - August 3, 2010 via mobile
we didn’t want him back, that’s why he chose to go to Baltimore.
notthatnoise - August 3, 2010
He went to Baltimore because we didn’t want him and they did. It wasn’t a slap in our face.
Buckeye Brad - August 3, 2010
You do know that we kicked him out, he didn’t walk.
And you know why he chose the Ravnes… because he was A FREE AGENT.
SpecialBrownie - August 3, 2010
and they were one of the few teams that were willing to take a chance on him.
bross09 - August 3, 2010
And more power to them. He deserves the chance.
Andrew Tolliver - August 4, 2010
I agree. He deserves a 2nd chance, just like vick got.
bross09 - August 4, 2010
The Browns were the idiots who gave him a contract that he was not worth — it’s not his fault that Phil Savage* was an idiot and overpaid for a subpar receiver.
*Cue kwoog’s defense of Phil Savage’s signing of Stallworth as a genius move.
TheDriveStillHurts - August 4, 2010
Seemed like a good move at that time. Expensive but if he didn’t step on anyone’s foot and subsequently get himself out of action then he might’ve done alright.
I still blame injuries for that slow start to that 08 season. I like to believe we didn’t suck as much as we did.
skipkirk - August 4, 2010
I don’t really see a lot of justification for that contract even without hindsight. Stallworth had an injury history and was coming off a mediocre year with the Patriots.
Roger Dorn - August 4, 2010
bross09 - August 4, 2010
Phil’s an Eagle once again.
golanbatrac - August 4, 2010
I disagree 1 jillion percent.
Bernie19Kosar - August 5, 2010
Shocked to hear that DA still sucks.
Western Reserve - August 3, 2010
Oh I see what you did there..
Andrew Tolliver - August 3, 2010
Good to hear about DA as he has a prominent spot on my
My Most Hated Ex Cleveland Athletes list, which is:
1.) Lebron
2.) DA
3.) Sasha
4.) J – Ho
5.) Mark Harper (his missed tackle on the sideline in the “Fumble game” was almost as egregious as the fumble)
Chucky Brown - August 3, 2010
At least DA apologized for being an idiot, kinda.
SpecialBrownie - August 3, 2010
We forgive you for not listing Carlos Boozer at #2. (In retrospect, I now understand why LeBoob didn’t make much of a fuss whenever Boozer was working his magic. Classic one-upsmanship.)
dawgtribe - August 3, 2010
Boozer’s an A Hole, but for soem reason he doesnt conjure up the kind of loathing I have for the others
Paxson’s probably closer to the list
Chucky Brown - August 3, 2010
Carlos Boozer screwed a blind guy.
That is quite a high level of doucheness.
Bernie19Kosar - August 5, 2010
This. He’s really high on my list.
Buckeye Brad - August 5, 2010
Prediction:
Stallworth will be injured by the time we play the Ravens.
rufio - August 3, 2010
Prediction:
The Ravens will be wearing purple.
Roger Dorn - August 3, 2010
Black, but nice try.
SpecialBrownie - August 3, 2010
The Browns, however, will continue to sport those nice looking brown pants.
BrownDawg1409 - August 3, 2010
Are we doing that again this year?
Brownie's Year - August 3, 2010
Chris Pokorny - August 3, 2010
Nice.
Buckeye Brad - August 3, 2010
And for even more proof… they’re playing the Browns.
SpecialBrownie - August 3, 2010
depends whether it’s home or away.
notthatnoise - August 3, 2010
Well, we’re both wrong if away. This pertains to their home games or if we choose to wear white at home, quit adding in variables that don’t pertain to the exact argument! haha.
SpecialBrownie - August 3, 2010
They wear black or purple at home. Why is this even an argument?
Brownie's Year - August 3, 2010
Because Chris and BB made it one.
SpecialBrownie - August 3, 2010
There isn’t an argument, just a correction.
Chris Pokorny - August 3, 2010
Wiki…
And you never know…
SpecialBrownie - August 3, 2010
So we shouldn’t have to see them this year.
JustBob - August 4, 2010
We did last year if I remember correctly.
SpecialBrownie - August 4, 2010
it also was a prime-time game. that won’t be the case this year.
notthatnoise - August 5, 2010
Right.
SpecialBrownie - August 5, 2010
Let’s never post this picture every again. I don’t like looking at it.
Simmsinns - August 3, 2010
Because of Reed or Garcia?
SpecialBrownie - August 3, 2010
Both.
Simmsinns - August 3, 2010
I see Favre suiting up when 2-a-days are over.
Brownie's Year - August 3, 2010
I was actually about to leave a similar comment:
Favre to retire, than un-retire after training camp. It’s an arm thing, see.
Simmsinns - August 3, 2010
He’s done this every year for the last 3,4 years. I see him coming back after training camp every year, until someone finally gets the balls to tell him that he won’t play unless he comes to camp. Hopefully that happens soon.
brownsboy14 - August 3, 2010 via mobile
I’d enjoy that, but somehow I don’t see Minnesota playing hardball with Favre as long as he’s upright and walking.
RelapsingDawgCatcher - August 4, 2010
Any chance we could proposition Favre for a player/coach position?
mooncamping - August 4, 2010
No thank you.
golanbatrac - August 4, 2010
That makes perfect sense since we’re so used to getting jerked around by selfish players who don’t have the decency to be honest about their true intentions. A marriage made in heaven.
dawgtribe - August 5, 2010
thank god I can read sarcasm, that would mean not so much, I guess.
mooncamping - August 5, 2010
When he was being forced into retirement by GB I would have loved to see him come to CLE. I was a big Favre fan in his GB years. But the way he’s handled things since has been terrible. If he came to the Browns as a QB coach, I would say absolutely yes. As a player, no.
dawgtribe - August 6, 2010
Well that´s the bridge I was trying to build here.
mooncamping - August 6, 2010
Forced into retirement?
Villeslgr - August 6, 2010
He was losing his starting job simply because the GB FO was anxious to start playing Rodgers. Who knows what the discussions were. Perhaps they were in fact encouraging him to retire. Perhaps he was told he would be 2nd string and couldn’t accept that. Either way I’m sure he felt his hand being forced.
dawgtribe - August 8, 2010
MKC tweeted that Lauvao was practicing with 1st team again today.
Roger Dorn - August 4, 2010
this is good news.
notthatnoise - August 4, 2010
this is great. maybe then there is a chance that all of our rookies (besides McCoy) drafted in the first few rounds play a large role. I have a feeling ward will, and hardesty will once he is healthy (and its fairly obvious haden will play a significant role), and if Lauvao does, that is 4 out of our first 5 picks (and I give the team slack since one pick was a QB.
If our later round picks can see the field too, I will be ecstatic.
bross09 - August 4, 2010

emily522 - August 4, 2010
Do we know if this was a situation where St. Clair and Pashos were both out and it was Lauvao and Womack at RG RT?
rufio - August 4, 2010
I do not know unfortunately.
Roger Dorn - August 4, 2010
I think on the new thread for practice it did say that St. Clair and Pashos were healthy today. I think it said something like Pashos/Lauvao as the first team and St. Clair/Womack on the 2nd.
but this is good news, esepecially if it means we can use Womack as that ‘swing lineman’ backup (G/T) which is what I think he’s best at.
bross09 - August 4, 2010
If Pashos legitimately wins the RT job and Lauvao legitimately wins the RG job (meaning both are significant upgrades vs. last year), I really like our line this year.
