With all of the daily training camp updates that took place the month of August, "Around the Pound" was temporarily placed on the shelf. It's officially back now, marking its first edition since July 21. Today, we take a look at some recent quotes by Browns players, some minor transactions that have taken place, and the job security of one Colt McCoy.
Stirred by a report from the Plain Dealer's Tony Grossi, speculation has begun that third-round pick Colt McCoy might be "on the bubble." If you look around on the Internet, I really think people are putting too much thought into what appears to be a personal opinion of Grossi's rather than a substantiated rumor (unless there's another article I'm missing):
Players who appear to need good showings in the last two games to make the roster include linebacker David Veikune, tight ends Robert Royal and Alex Smith, running backs Chris Jennings and James Davis, quarterbacks Brett Ratliff and Colt McCoy, and receiver Carlton Mitchell.

While McCoy certainly hasn't played very well this preseason, he's only done so behind a backup offensive line. It doesn't make any sense to have that be the only opportunity you're going to give a third-round rookie before cutting him loose, which is why I feel pretty confident McCoy isn't on the bubble.
With that said, if he came down with a minor injury over the next two weeks, it wouldn't surprise me to see him stashed on the injured reserve so that Eric Mangini could keep Brett Ratliff. In a press conference this morning, Mangini seemed to indicate that if everything went well with Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace against the Detroit Lions, then both may sit out the final preseason game against the Chicago Bears. Mangini used the same tactic last year with Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn.
This would give Mangini a better idea of how McCoy can play with the first-string offense. Mangini noted in his press conference that he's been part of teams that have kept two, three, or four quarterbacks on the roster, hinting that he isn't opposed to straying from the traditional "three quarterback" system.
On the offensive line, veteran John St. Clair missed practice Tuesday and Wednesday due to personal issues. The good news is that both Shawn Lauvao and Tony Pashos returned to practice on Tuesday. Mangini said that barring any setbacks, Pashos should play in this week's game against the Detroit Lions. That means that we might see our regular season starting offensive line blocking for Delhomme for the first time this preseason.
Also returning to practice on Tuesday were WR Mohamed Massaquoi and LB David Bowens. It's great to hear that Bowens is back, because he played pretty well at the end of last season to the point where I regarded him as our best linebacker at the time.
Since camp is closed to the public, even the media can't publish the specifics of what went down in practice anymore. With that said, CBS Rapid Reports noted that in Tuesday's practice, Seneca Wallace fired a 50-yard pass to Jake Allen was the offensive highlight, while the defensive highlights came from Gerard Lawson, who had a good day in red zone drills.
Lastly, according to a tweet by the Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot, "RB Montario Hardesty put pads on and plans to run outside, another step [forward]." I didn't list this as major news, because it doesn't mean the second-rounder is involved in team drills yet.
After placing Kwaku Danso on the waived/injured list, the Browns went out and filled his roster spot with nose tackle Travis Ivey. Ivey, an undrafted free agent from Maryland, was in camp with the Miami Dolphins originally.

No way McCoy gets cut. How can they cut a rookie when they were selling his jersey at Training Camp. From a pure businesss standpoint I dont think the Browns can cut him.
kjc - August 25, 2010
Grossi threw his name in there intentionally for this kind of reaction.
Roger Dorn - August 25, 2010
See Grossi throw out controversial yet vaguely plausible rumor. See Yahoo! pick it up with big headline like Could the Browns cut Colt McCoy? See the rumors fly.
Watch the Plain Dealer’s pageviews rise. Watch Grossi smile and plan for his next raise. Earn, Grossi, earn!
RelapsingDawgCatcher - August 25, 2010
I can’t blame him. Those spray-on tans don’t come cheap.
golanbatrac - August 25, 2010
I legitimately loled at this.
rufio - August 26, 2010
Yahoo picked it up…. big surprise there
TheMan1 - August 25, 2010
It’s interesting how MKC is reporting that McCoy will make the final roster despite his struggles. Her conclusion is based on what Mangini said about Colt’s struggles:
He left it open that they could carry four QBs because it’s a position of value and they could trade away one of them for something. I’m assuming he meant Ratliff but he left it open to interpretation.
The whole story is retarded. We know why Delhomme and Wallace were brought in. They came in to mentor him and to keep the seat warm for him until he’s ready to compete. They were brought in as an upgrade over BQ/DA. It’s funny that they are doing exactly what they were brought in to do and because they are doing it well enough these writers jump to conclusions that McCoy is “on the bubble”.
Ridonculous.
dawgtribe - August 26, 2010
Mangini’s quote there seems dead on. The idea that we’ll cut Colt at this point seems highly unlikely, given that we’ve had so little opportunity to gauge and develop his potential and that we’ve got two viable QBs with good mentoring potential ahead of him on the roster. It does make good headlines, though.
That said, are we really going to keep 4 QBs? I don’t see Ratliff having much trade value, and trading Colt seems almost as odd as cutting him unless someone out there is quietly letting it be known that they’re very interested….
RelapsingDawgCatcher - August 26, 2010
If I had to guess, I’d say that McCoy gets at least the same opportunity as David Greene (QB Seahawks; 3rd round 2005). Greene never saw any game action in his two years in Seattle, but made the roster both years as a #3 behind Hasselback and Wallace.
golanbatrac - August 26, 2010
…and at worst, Colt is a more talented Version of Greene (who wasn’t very talented or physically gifted, but was a winner in college).
bross09 - August 26, 2010
see…at least we have a beat reporter that doesn’t say stuff just to throw up dirt.
bross09 - August 26, 2010
I saw speculation elsewhere, can’t remember where, that Montario would be practicing tomorrow.
Roger Dorn - August 25, 2010
I think his spot is all locked up. I voted more out of wishfulness.
troy145 - August 25, 2010
so you want him cut already? why?
notthatnoise - August 25, 2010
I dont think I “want him cut” but I prefer Ratliff over McCoy and I dont think that we ought to carry 4 QBs. I like the guy personally but I dont think he’s ever going to amount to anything more than a blase 3rd string QB.
But again, I defer to the wisdom of Holmgren.
troy145 - August 26, 2010
What has Ratliff done that makes you think he has a better future than McCoy? Certainly McCoy is no guarentee to be a good starting QB some day, but at least he’s a rookie who we haven’t seen what he can do yet. We’ve seen what Ratliff can do and he’s nothing special. Why keep him over McCoy? What upside does he have?
Buckeye Brad - August 26, 2010
Exactly. Even if Ratliff is marginally better than McCoy today, Ratliff has had years to get where he’s going, and you have to think we’ve seen more or less what he’s got to show. Colt, he’s got some room to develop and a good environment here to do so….
RelapsingDawgCatcher - August 26, 2010
THIS!
bross09 - August 26, 2010
The only upside Ratliff has is that he doesn’t look like a deer in the headlights when he is on the field. I don’t feel confident with McCoy as the 3rd string QB, but I don’t see the logic in keeping a 4th QB when there is plenty of playable talent that could be kept on the roster in place of Ratliff.
MkBrwn - August 26, 2010
he certainly didn’t look confident or poised on saturday (and only marignally more composed than McCoy). from what I have seen of ratliff the first 2 games, he may only be marginally better than McCoy at this point (and its definitely too early to tell).
and what you said, thats not an upside. when BB talks about upside, he is talking about potential. If Ratliff, a veteran who was on the team last year, can barely outperform a 3rd round rookie who is new to the offense and the team, how much better can he really get?
bross09 - August 26, 2010
The upside comment was meant to be tongue and cheek, but whatever.
MkBrwn - August 27, 2010
well…tongue in cheek often is supposed to be funny, and dude…you just got tomatoes thrown at you on open mike night.
bross09 - August 27, 2010
there is no such thing as a third QB you can feel confident with. otherwise, they wouldn’t be a third QB.
notthatnoise - August 26, 2010
Right. I’m not worried at all about the confidence I have in the 3rd QB. If he’s in the game then we’re probably not going to win anyways, so why does that matter? I want a 3rd QB with potential to get better and possibly be a starter some day, and that’s what McCoy is and Ratliff is not.
Buckeye Brad - August 26, 2010
If either of those QBs play, I’d like to see us go to the “eff you we are running the ball” offense we saw late last year.
rufio - August 27, 2010
I adore that offense
Roger Dorn - August 27, 2010
Ditto, old school all the way. With Hillis on board, this could be even more entertaining.
RelapsingDawgCatcher - August 27, 2010
Damn right!
PeytonHillisIsBeast - August 27, 2010
I agree. As I said before, It doesn’t make sense to keep Ratliff in lieu of playable talent just because there is lack of confidence in a 3rd string QB.
MkBrwn - August 27, 2010
why would you want him cut?
johnnyphoenix - August 25, 2010
No way we cut him.
emily522 - August 25, 2010
Absolutely not. That Tony Grossi’s opinion has gotten this much publicity is enough to make me sick. It is on the front page of Yahoo for crying out loud!
Browns town - August 25, 2010
Grossi is my arch-nemesis now. He should have been canned the moment those words went to press. Idiot.
theW0LF - August 25, 2010
It actually does have a negative effect on the team. The comment has the potential to shake the confidence of McCoy when I assume he catches wind of it. Additionally, it undermines the credibility of the front office for drafting a cut-able player in the 3rd round. I am assuming this comment is without any reasonable basis other than neither QB has played well in the preseason. If this is the reason he made the comment, I think Grossi should take a look in the mirror.
Roger Dorn - August 25, 2010
If McCoy has what it takes he will use this as motivation, he won’t let it affect his confidence.
rufio - August 26, 2010
Incredibly dumb. There is no Ratliff OR McCoy. The answer should be so obvious that it goes unmentioned.
PretendingActually writing that there’s a chance Colt is cut in favor of Ratliff is just laughable.Simmsinns - August 25, 2010
Not a fan of McCoy, but ....
the Browns “braintrust” would be asinine to give up on McCoy at this time. Grossi’s brain here is a bit “mossy” me thinks.
Muscle-Dolphin - August 25, 2010
NEVER!!! I’m out of High School, but I’m NEVER going somewhere with “Olentangy” in it’s name.
BrownDawg1409 - August 25, 2010
But he’s going against a backup defense.
TheRealSlimShady - August 25, 2010
And the fact that our backup offensive line is getting killed by the backup defense is a testament to just how bad that offensive line is. The Packers and Rams didn’t have anywhere near the problems with their backup offensive lines in pass protection.
Chris Pokorny - August 25, 2010
this
North Coast Flea - August 26, 2010
And so is BQ.
SpecialBrownie - August 25, 2010
Seriously, it’s bad. He looking at free rushers or OL getting collapsed into him right when he finishes his drop back. This is happening quite often.
rufio - August 26, 2010
Something seriously needs to be done about Rotoworld.
Their comments are pieces of objective crap. Please pull them off the widget screen or send them an email on how much they suck or something please!
SpecialBrownie - August 25, 2010
I think you mean subjective.
Roger Dorn - August 25, 2010
Damn, yes I did.
SpecialBrownie - August 26, 2010
Objectively speaking, I think they are crap.
rufio - August 26, 2010
Sorry, I like having it there. I agree the comments sections are laughable, but I always check the feed still.
Chris Pokorny - August 26, 2010
on the off beat
I watched Glee once, it was terrible.
V3K - August 26, 2010
That’s fine, not everyone’s cup of tea.
Chris Pokorny - August 26, 2010
I will admit it is an acquired taste, and not the best acted or written show on the planet…but I still love it!
bross09 - August 26, 2010
They hooked me in with Journey and I’ve been helpless since. Sue Sylvester is also a wonderfully acted character.
rufio - August 27, 2010
I totally agree. I have always liked journey though, but they definitely have introduced a lot of people to a lot of different types of music.
bross09 - August 27, 2010
I can’t stand Journey.
notthatnoise - August 29, 2010
I’m sorry.
rufio - August 29, 2010
and you are entitled to your opinion. Personally I like them, but they are nowhere near my favorite music…I just like a lot of different music.
bross09 - August 29, 2010
clearly you stopped believin’.
Dawg Nuts - August 30, 2010
Glee kind of rocks dude, not gonna lie.
SpecialBrownie - August 26, 2010
it is my guilty pleasure (granted, I used to be a theater geek). I haven’t had a good guilty pleasure show since Gossip Girl got bad after the first season (yes I said it), unless you count dexter.
bross09 - August 26, 2010
Dexter isn’t a guilty pleasure. Dexter is a damn good show. I’m currently on season 7 of Stargate SG-1. Looking forward to the return of Parenthood and hoping to find another show besides Parenthood to add to my weekly must watch list (which, at present, includes Parenthood and nothing else).
golanbatrac - August 26, 2010
I watch both Dexter and Parenthood. Dexter is awesome.
Roger Dorn - August 26, 2010
I dunno, I recently started watching Dexter, and while season 1 was great, season two just isn’t doing it for me.
notthatnoise - August 26, 2010
I thought season 2 wasn’t bad. It wasn’t as good as season 1, but was still good. i did feel it had a lull in the middle (but many seasons do). The beginning was pretty solid and the last 2 episodes were amazing. Season 3 isn’t anything special.
bross09 - August 26, 2010
Love Dexter and I love Psych. If you can’t get down with Gus, then you just can’t get down.
Plus, Dorn.
Bernie19Kosar - August 26, 2010
I’ll have to catch psych on DVD.
golanbatrac - August 26, 2010
I love Psych.
Villeslgr - August 26, 2010
Every Friday in Santa Monica @ 10 O’Clock there’s a MuRdEr….
Drexel Dawg - August 26, 2010
Psych is awesome. I remember seeing previews for it being a new show and thinking “I’m gonna love that”, haven’t stopped since.

Holy Joe Thomas!! I just realized they’re talking bobbleheads! Christmas can’t get here soon enough!
Villeslgr - August 27, 2010
what do you mean what? I predicted I would like that show and I did (granted my phrasing was a bit unconventional).
bross09 - August 27, 2010
What?! is one of Shawn and Gus’ sayings.
I don’t think he was questioning your psychic ability to guess what shows you will like. Relax.
Bernie19Kosar - August 27, 2010
oh. yeah…now I get it. I thought he was confused of what I said. I just missed that one.
bross09 - August 28, 2010
What?!
Bernie19Kosar - August 28, 2010
Yeah what Bernie said. They always say What?!?
Villeslgr - August 28, 2010
I mean…moreo f the guilty pleasure of rooting for a serial killer. It is a damn good show except season 3 feels kinda sucky. then again, it sucks to that standard but is still better than 90% of stuff out there.
bross09 - August 26, 2010
Dexter is amazing. Don’t ruin anything for me, I just finished season 2. Season 3 is in my instant queue.
rufio - August 27, 2010
I have to giggle at Gossip Girl.
emily522 - August 27, 2010
yeah…it really is a weird show for me to like…but was my guilty pleasure a couple years ago. at the time, my sister was like 12/13 and she would always watch TV when I did homework…then it got all dramatic and it had all these suspenseful moments, and somehow I got hooked…but then it sucked when it started to go into all the crappy, sappy relationships (2nd season). when it was people getting accused for murder, then it was interesting…wow…I know WAAY too much about GG.
bross09 - August 27, 2010
Regarding the Colt McCoy poll. Did you mean roster spot in jeopardy, now or later?
I mean he fits the Holmgren prodigy mold, as in none chosen above round three, and with a sobering price tag, also potentially benchable behind a quarterback of his choosing, like he did to David Greene for two years? Maybe. But then again the expectancy is kind of high, considering the damage he did in college? So not so much. Also, is he the personality type, an unquestioning system quarterback? Well umh, no.
So based on these parameters. Now. No. Later. Certainly.
mooncamping - August 26, 2010
The poll meant now.
Chris Pokorny - August 26, 2010
Now, yes, if Holmgren gets something roundabout for him, as a reward for taking him out of the NFL food chain.
mooncamping - August 28, 2010
how is grossi the hall of fame voter representing the cleveland browns? he contributes as much as bill livingston to improving the football knowledge of fans………can we get terry pluto or cabot to lead a coup against him?
sleepy042 - August 26, 2010
Cabot is also bad.
SpecialBrownie - August 26, 2010
I don’t think she is bad, but I don’t think she is particularly great…however, as a writer and a HOF voter, I would consider her an upgrade.
bross09 - August 26, 2010
Grossi is the man most responsible for keeping Modell out.
Roger Dorn - August 26, 2010
Pluto is not purely a browns guy and is more of an all encompassing cleveland sports writer with great opinions than a beat writer who focuses on one team. But I would love MKC to lead it.
bross09 - August 26, 2010
Ah crap. I’m going to end up like DA and BQ, aren’t I?
BrettRatliffisBeast - August 27, 2010
Yep.

HA!
