Cleveland Browns Training Camp Report: Day 18 (Morning & Evening)

With the news of punter Dave Zastudil going on the injured reserve this morning, the team decided to bring back tight end Joel Gamble. I would've thought that with Floyd Womack and Shawn Lauvao scheduled to miss some time that another lineman might be brought in, but that wasn't the case.

The Browns hit the practice field twice on Tuesday -- once in the morning, and once in the evening. Let's get to the cumulative recap of what went down...

Star-divide

TRAINING CAMP REPORT - DAY 18 [MORNING & EVENING] (8/17/10)

  1. Benard Moves Up to First Unit: The biggest news of the day came during the morning session when fans saw second-year linebacker Marcus Benard playing outside linebacker with the first-team offense, replacing Scott Fujita. Fujita didn't get benched; he actually moved to inside linebacker, taking the spot of Eric Barton (who was taking the spot of D'Qwell Jackson). It seems like a lot of shuffling, but it also adds to the belief that a guy like Benard has a great shot at making the final roster.

  2. Returning to Action: Several players returned to practice Tuesday morning, including QB Colt McCoy, FB Peyton Hillis, and LB David Veikune. Beyond the usual suspects, the notable players missing from practice were CB Brandon McDonald, RB James Davis, and WR Mohamed Massaquoi. It was mentioned in a previous post that offensive linemen Floyd Womack (knee scoped) and Shawn Lauvao (personal issues) are out for awhile too.

  3. Brown Gets Delhomme Twice: Defensive back Sheldon Brown had Jake Delhomme's number on Tuesday, intercepting him once in each practice session. The morning session saw him intercept a pass intended for Joshua Cribbs in the two-minute drill, and the evening session saw him intercept a pass intended for Ben Watson on a fourth-down play.

  4. Touchdown City: Because the Browns ran a lot of situational drills in the evening session (such as red zone, goal line, and fourth-down drills), there were quite a few touchdowns. Among one of the "stars?"...

  5. Engram Grabs Three Touchdowns: It wasn't the youngsters who shined, but rather veteran Bobby Engram, who had three situational touchdowns during the evening session. Two of the plays came from long-distance -- a 20-yard score from Colt McCoy, and a 40-yarder from Seneca Wallace. If the Browns keep a fifth receiver, Engram just might end up finding himself a roster spot by default. Johnathan Haggerty is gone, Carlton Mitchell is struggling, Jake Allen hasn't stood out, and Taurus Johnson is new. Syndric Steptoe could give Engram the best competition.

  6. Scuffle on the Field: There was a small fight that broke out between LB Titus Brown and RB Chris Jennings in the morning. Brown was apparently the person at fault for the incident though, because he was the run forced to run a punishment lap. Overall, the incident wasn't too serious.

  7. More Action for Moore: Although tight end Evan Moore had a drop in the morning, he "redeemed himself" with a 20-yard reception. During the evening session, Moore had at least two touchdowns, again proving to be a viable option for quarterbacks in the red zone.

  8. Ward's Coverage on Steptoe: During the morning practice, Tony Grossi had praise for the coverage of safety T.J. Ward on one particular play that saw him go over the top of receiver Syndric Steptoe to knock the pass away, all before making contact with the receiver.

  9. Right Side of Offensive Line: With Womack and Lauvao out, the right side of the offensive line featured Billy Yates (RG) and Scott Kooistra (RT). It was reported that OG Pat Murray also subbed in at right guard a few times. The team should get John St. Clair back pretty soon, and it's hard to believe that right now he is the guy who can help patch the right side back up a bit.

  10. One to Watch?: Don't look now, but cornerback DeAngelo Smith seems to be making some headlines in camp with a few pass breakups here and there. If the Browns have any intention of keeping an extra defensive back, Smith could sneak his way onto the roster.

  11. Wide Receiver Brownies: Newcomer Taurus Johnson caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Brett Ratliff...on another play from Ratliff, a fleaflicker attempt, rookie Carlton Mitchell dropped the pass in the end zone...receiver Jake Allen had at least two drops on the day...running back Chris Jennings was also the victim of a drop.

  12. Hyping Veikune: If there's one writer who has been promoting David Veikune, it would be the Canton Repository's Steve Doerschuk. He continued the piece he did the other day on trying to cover the specifics of all 80 players in camp. With fewer players to cover now that his first batch was over, Doerschuk went into even more (and therefore entertaining) details in Tuesday's article. Check it out!

hey ho, big mama!

Note to the Ladies: If your arms are bigger than an NFL players’ arms, wear something with sleeves.

There is nothing wrong with chubby. Especially her chubby, she’s the good kind of chubby.

She’s a thousand times better looking if she wears something appropriate to her size. Something loose and low cut that covers her armpit rolls and back fat.

I like how it hugs her tittles though. Very appealing to be on the contrary.

You like her Y.A.’s?

nicely played. rec.

…ugh. Damnit.

Still, she’s a cute girl. I like me some good looking chubbys.

YAs = ?

Y.A. Tittles.

SB said that he was a fan of that females “tittles”.

I like to think of it as a mix between titties and nipples, not a short for Y.A. Tittle.

(O.T., BTW, the reason I seemed to come ‘late to the party’ on that one thread is b/c I didn’t have my computer, but now I have a new, better one).

Dude, what did Chris say?

I just scrolled down to see why it was closed, and I saw your comment at the bottom and I felt it pissed you off for some reason and it seemed okay just to clarify.

That’s it, bross. You’re getting banned.

Chris didn’t say anything. You may continue to talk about that thread if you desire.

haha I see what you did there.

I’d rather be with a girl of her proportions than someone anorexic looking. At least you know you aren’t going to crush her…

How about a girl who is normal? I shouldn’t have to pick between Tessa the Two Ton Tessie and a paper thin girl.

Okay you guys are seriously overstating that girl’s size on this thread.

That girl is far from fat.

Maybe Im spoiled. I live in Florida. Our women are top shelf.

They are also probably more HPV positive than ours.

I find the notion that women are significantly different from place to place largely inaccurate.

DBN is feeling more like a high school locker room all the time.

I blame myself.

Well, these things do develop a momentum of their own, and between this and the Thread That Shall Not Be Mentioned Again, there’s plenty of blame to go around. At least this resulted in that awesome Morris Berman photo appearing here (nice add BB) so it wasn’t a total loss.

When I hear the name Y.A. Tittle that photo immediately comes to mind, so I had to find it and post it here.

It’s the Y.A. Tittle photo. The best of all of the photos from that era of the game.

You know what, I was wrong. This is actually a crop of the Dozier Mobley version, not the better-known Berman. Here’s Berman’s full original:

Dig the way Tittle’s head is bowed in this one and the expanded stands behind him. Beauty.

That’s the one. I thought the one Brad posted was just cropped. Didn’t know there was another, lesser version in existence.

It’s an interesting story. There’s a good article on the two similar shots at http://www.ajc.com/sports/one-moment-two-photographs-207553.html

Very interesting. Thanks.

Rec for the article. Cool story.

Glad you enjoyed it. I’m a sucker for the backstories on famous photos.

Yeah, I didn’t know there was two versions either. When I did a google images search there were many images that looked similar and I just thought they were cropped versions of the same picture, as you said.

Easy to do. The AJC piece notes that the two are often mixed up and credited improperly, and from cropped thumbnails it’s particularly hard to tell….

It looks like he´s waiting for a plant to sprout through the power of mind control.

This made me laugh.

You must find Jack Black funny then.

Who’s that?

I’d tell you to search the name, but you don’t have internet anymore.

I have internet.

I find the notion that people are significantly different from place to place largely inaccurate.

well, yes, that too.

Go back to watch the 2009(?) NBA playoff series of Orlando vs Cleveland. Just look in the stands. Orlando’s stands were stocked with beautiful women. Clevelands were stocked with…. women. Nothing against Cleveland, its a great town and I love the Brownies with all my football heart.

I don’t think the crowd in the good seats of an NBA playoff game is a representative sample of all women in the city.

Doerschuk on Veikune:

No. 57, Veikune, is back from an injury. Keep an eye on this kid. He can bench press 225 pounds 40-some times and is starting to figure out how to play. He’s running with the twos in 11 on 11s with fellow 2009 draft pick Kaluka Maiava as the other inside backer. He diagnoses what’s behind the pile at the snap, hustles all the way around to his left, and darts in to confront RB Jerome Harrison.

Good to hear he was injured (not simply terrible) and making enough progress to be working with the 2’s. I was beginning to worry that he was indeed a “sunk cost”, but it seemed a little suspicious that he wouldn’t play at all during a preseason game.

It would be hard to him to take an ILB spot from Fujita/DQ/Gocong, but if he can work his way on to sub packages this year that would be a welcome sign of life.

Agree this is good news, but the line that he is “starting to figure out how to play” is kinda funny.*

*Yes, yes, I know he is making a difficult transition from line to linebacker, etc., etc. But he was a 2nd round pick.

Here are the five defensive players drafted before him, followed by the five drafted after him (all were taken in the second round):

everette brown de car 15 tackles 2.5 sacks
clint sintim lb nyg 10 tackles 1 sack
connor barwin de hou 11 tackles 4.5 sacks
michael mitchell s oak 8 tackles 1.5 sacks
darcel mcbath db den 13 tackles 2 int

william moore db atl no stats
fili moala dt ind 4 tackles
paul kruger de bal 4 tackles 1 int
sherrod martin db car 14 tackles 3 int
sean smith db mia 31 tackles

Given the difficulty of the transition from DE to ILB, I don’t see where he’s that far behind the players listed above.

that’s sort of astounding actually. Hard to believe there hasn’t been a single guy out of 11 who made an impact at the NFL level from the mid-to-late second round last year.

I would have taken Barwin’s 4.5 sacks and talent. I had him higher than Veikune, but he was gone. Barwin only played a little DE at Cincy after switching positions from TE. The kid needs to refine his skills but he is talented.

I would’ve thought that with Floyd Womack and Shawn Lauvao scheduled to miss some time that another lineman might be brought in, but that wasn’t the case.

i agree. bringing in joel seems like a gamble. bu-dum tshhh

I have been skeptical of Ward. I think I am ready to jump on the bandwagon. Who is driving this thing anyways? Dorn?

Yup — I remember you saying that you thought he’d bust. Let’s hope you were wrong.

He keeps making open field tackles like he did on Donald Driver I will gladly eat crow.

I am completely on board with Ward. After that hit he put on Driver, I was excited. Is the second coming of Eric Turner finally here. If he’s that kind of safety, all I gotta say is its about time.

Turner was more athletic. Ward strikes me as a much better version the player we thought we were getting when we drafted Sean Jones.

I wish I could take credit for driving the bandwagon, but I have been cautiously optimistic since we drafted him. I have a lot of faith in Mangini and Ryan’s ability to coach DB’s.

Prediction:
At some point this season Ward does not wrap up on a tackle and gives up a big play.

After watching the game again, there were several times he “thudded” the ballcarrier like they do in practice. I really like him and think he will work out for us as a good player, but this is something he really has to work on.

There is a difference between a good tackler and flashy tackler. I remember having this convo once. We’re all on the bandwagon because they were flashy hits. Most were still good but not to form. I think it’s just because he’s an excited rookie, it’ll get better.

The play where he wrapped up Driver in the flat was a thing of beauty.

Granted I didn’t see the game, I am going off of youtube highlights.

Yes, that tackle what exactly what he needs to do.

There were too many where he hit but did not wrap. At least one of them is in the highlight, if I remember correctly; Packers going right to left, Ward on the high side of the screen. He ends up making the tackle, but the guy bounces off first.

I heard Ward himself talking about this on Training Camp Daily after the game. He said he was used to “thudding” in practice and he forgot to wrap up in the game. So at least he’s aware of this and hopefully will remember in the future.

I doubt it gets worse as he sees more live action. I am not so optimistic as to think it will be completely fixed by week 1.

It seems like a lot of shuffling, but it also adds to the belief that a guy like Benard has a great shot at making the final roster.

Great shot? I think it’s pretty much a lock that Benard makes the roster (absent injury).

Would it be disruptive to bring in a warm body for OL? Isn’t it better to stick with what you got and maintain rhythm rather than bring in a new guy? (Just a thought).

With that said, the right side of the OL is frightening for a Browns fan.

I don’t think it’s that bad once we get Pashos healthy. The pass blocking will be sub-par, but we should have one of the better run blocking right sides in the league.

Engram is a winner. Put some effort into Mitchell, I think he´s worth it. Maybe McCoy should stay longer and throw to him after practice, maybe it´s just the jitters. On a side note, do you know the 40 times and vertical jump numbers on Jake Allen and Carlton Mitchell, it might decide how they are used?
I´ve got Massaquoi at wide out, Engram in the slot, and Moore at tight end, for the basic formation, hows about everyone else?

I´ve got Massaquoi at wide out, Engram in the slot, and Moore at tight end, for the basic formation, hows about everyone else?

Although I’m fine with having Stuckey in the slot, I wouldn’t be upset with seeing this trio in there.

Previous reports indicate that Jake Allen could run a 4.56, and I think Carlton Mitchell ran a 4.50.

I thought Mitchell was under 4.5

Speaking of this, we could use a couple of those sub 4.4 guys somewhere on this offense. I know 40 times aren’t everything, but this is one of the areas where I think we could use a bump in the speed of a position group.

Alright, then Jake Allen must be the leaper, and Carlton Mitchell must be the long ball getter.

Carlton Mitchell must be the long ball getter.dropper.

fixed.

Why, does that pay more, when you were a 6th round draft pick?

he’s a WR. WRs have to catch the ball, and if they don’t, they have little value. i like the kid, but he’s dropped a lot of balls in camp. i don’t know what else there is to say.

He´s the type of player, where if he does catch it, he elevates your game. Patience makes sense in his case.

I’d rather have Watson at TE on first and second down.
