Over at ESPN, the official Madden 11 ratings for Cleveland Browns players have been released. Did any of our players receive a rating above 90?

Yes, of course they did. The Browns had three players who scored a 90 or above. Those players would be LT Joe Thomas (95), LG Eric Steinbach (91), and DL Shaun Rogers (93). Rogers is rated a 93 at the nose tackle position; if you feel like moving Ahtyba Rubin to that position, I'm not quite sure how it'd be affected.
The speed demons on the Browns' offense are Joshua Cribbs and Jerome Harrison, both of whom received a score of 92 in that category with good acceleration and agility too. In terms of the roster itself, a few things are noticable:
Other than that, the roster itself looks reasonable (maybe you could also remove Brett Ratliff and Chris Jennings). I'm sure we have a lot of Madden nuts out there though who are more fit to comment on the player ratings than I am, so feel free to sound off!

while the overall ratings are generally pretty good, I really do get the sense that they set out trying to hit a specific overall, and adjust every other rating accordingly. for instance, Robi has a higher speed rating than Massaquoi.
notthatnoise - July 6, 2010
I think they just dont research that hard
not with the lesser name players like Robi and Mohamed
troy145 - July 6, 2010
I tend to agree, they have a formula in place so they tweak some of the components to get a guy to a target area.
Roger Dorn - July 6, 2010
Don’t know precisely how “speed” affects the actual game speed of a player, but both have similar top-end speed. I’d say Mass is more agile and a little quicker in the short areas.
rufio - July 6, 2010
even if they just went by 40 times, Massaquoi was noticeably faster, if I remember correctly.
notthatnoise - July 7, 2010
I thought both were high 4.4s. A quick search yielded 4.46-4.52 for Robi (4.49 being the time I remember as “official”, not that that means much) and 4.57-4.66 for Massaquoi.
rufio - July 7, 2010
I did an (extremely) quick search yesterday that had Massaquoi in the low 4.4s and Robi in the mid 4.5s. I guess the real lesson here is don’t trust 40 times.
notthatnoise - July 7, 2010
could have been pro-day numbers
The Licensed Pessimist - July 7, 2010
I was taking ranges from both the pro day and combine with my search.
rufio - July 7, 2010
I would trust what we see in games more.
They are both “fast enough” guys who aren’t going to simply outrun Cbs, but they should both be able to be effective NFL wideouts (which means at least occasionally stretching the field deep, even if not by simply outrunning someone).
rufio - July 7, 2010
this is my thought as well, silly to quibble over a couple points here and there I guess.
notthatnoise - July 8, 2010
I like that Joe Thomas can outjump and outrun Robert Royal.
I like that BMac is a 34 rated tackler.
Sean Rogers is slower than Phil Dawson?
golanbatrac - July 6, 2010
yeah, things like this are why I don’t like Madden. Sean Rogers is fast for a lineman, really fast.
notthatnoise - July 6, 2010
They overrated BMac’s tackling ability.
Bernie19Kosar - July 6, 2010
Madden ratings???
You know, it’s just easier to create players to your liking.
Bey - July 6, 2010
Robiskie was like a 70something or 80 on Madden 10. Sucks his rating dropped. He’s my #1 receiver for my Browns franchise. I think MoMass’s rating could’ve been a little bit better. I agree with the RB ratings and QB ratings. But Hardesty’s AWR shouldn’t be so low imo. Sucks that McCoy is a 73. I mean I agree with that but it’s going to suck to build him up haha. They gave him nice accuracy. The CB ratings look good. Surprised that Asante got an 83 on tackle.
I’d say the ratings overall are pretty good.
emily522 - July 6, 2010
while I understand why they did it, I still think 65 is too low for Robi. that doesn’t even give him a chance to be serviceable.
notthatnoise - July 6, 2010
To be fair, he wasn’t serviceable last season.
Bernie19Kosar - July 6, 2010
If he becomes serviceable the update will make him that way.
TheRealSlimShady - July 6, 2010
thats a good point, but I don’t have an xbox live gold subscription, so I can’t get updates.
notthatnoise - July 7, 2010
You can still get them with silver.
TheRealSlimShady - July 7, 2010
This is false.
SpecialBrownie - July 7, 2010
it won’t let me do it for NHL, I don’t know why it would let me for Madden.
notthatnoise - July 8, 2010
I understand why they did that, too. But I think 65 is too low. Maybe like 72 or something.
My only problem with buying Madden 11 is that I feel like they made the team worse this year overall than last year.
emily522 - July 6, 2010
I would imagine that’s probably because of where expectations started last year and how we sucked it up at the beginning of the year. They probably figure, like TRSS said, they can update if we show that we’re better than the initial ratings.
Villeslgr - July 6, 2010
yeah…I just finally got madden 10 a few weeks ago…MoMass is ending up being my #1 guy…he has just improved much faster…at least they got one thing right.
I feel however like MoMass is underrated and Cribbs as a WR is waaay overrated for ’11
bross09 - July 7, 2010
It seems EA thinks Brown will start with Wright at 1a.
North Coast Flea - July 6, 2010
Tebow got the higest toughness rating.
TheRealSlimShady - July 6, 2010

emily522 - July 6, 2010
That’s funny.
Buckeye Brad - July 6, 2010
…But he cries.

SpecialBrownie - July 6, 2010
One of EA Sports sources on Tebow’s toughness:

Simmsinns - July 6, 2010
The 3 above posts need to be green.
emily522 - July 6, 2010
I wasn’t saying he should, I was just pointing that out. The top 10 toughest players are all white FWIW, but fastest 10 are black so I wouldn’t call the game racist.
TheRealSlimShady - July 6, 2010
That’s a 1:1 ratio, completely non racist.
SpecialBrownie - July 6, 2010
Looks like you are a racist for saying 1 to 1 is racist. And plus African-American players probably have the top ratings in jumping, agility, and acceleration.
TheRealSlimShady - July 6, 2010
Wow. Such a homophobe.
SpecialBrownie - July 6, 2010
This is getting funny.
TheRealSlimShady - July 7, 2010
Wow, way to be sexist.
Adrock2099 - July 10, 2010
That really makes me laugh. I guess we’ll see how tough he is against NFL players, if he gets in a game.
Villeslgr - July 6, 2010
Question for everyone: is waitingfornextyear.com a good Cleveland sports fansite? I’m trying to find a good site that covers all 3 sports.
emily522 - July 6, 2010
I heard SBN is a good website from somewhere. The Cavalier section is sketchy at times though
I say you try that ;]
SpecialBrownie - July 6, 2010
Haha. I meant other than SBN :P.
And I wish FTS was better.
emily522 - July 6, 2010
I love Fear the Sword. I just wish the community was larger, and the trolls were dealt with more swiftly. Other than that, I really like the blog, and use as my primary source for Cavaliers’ basketball discussion.
Simmsinns - July 6, 2010
Yeah, that site can be so hard to read sometimes because of all the idiots on there. I wish it was run more like this site and LGT.
Buckeye Brad - July 6, 2010
Agree.
emily522 - July 6, 2010
Speaking of trolls…
Do you guys think we should do like a LeBron thread on here tomorrow? Because all these idiots are going to be on FTS and it’ll be impossible to actually have an intelligent conversation on there whether he stays or goes.
emily522 - July 7, 2010
I could care less about Bron bron, so no.
SpecialBrownie - July 7, 2010
I would be in but will be either crying in my beer or doing some sort of running/screaming celebration.
rufio - July 7, 2010
Ah, true.
emily522 - July 7, 2010
word is he’s going to the heat, but thats from espn, so take it with a massive grain of salt.

that’s what I’m reading as well…again taken with a grain of salt
Kimble_79 - July 8, 2010
Where have you been btw?
SpecialBrownie - July 6, 2010
I was on vacation in late June for a week. I went to Wizarding World of HP and Disney world, so that was pretty awesome. Also, I’ve been working and getting ready for Clemson. I’ve been reading, just not commenting as much lately.
emily522 - July 6, 2010
Ah, the newest area of DW. How was it?
SpecialBrownie - July 6, 2010
Wizarding World’s part of Universal, not Disney. But to answer your question it was…. AMAZING. It was a bit smaller than I expected, but I loved it. I really felt like I was there. The detail of the buildings and shops was just incredible. And the inside of Hogwarts looked so genuine. The best part was that since we stayed in a Universal hotel, we got in at 8 AM (park’s open at 9) and didn’t even have to wait that long to get in. The Forbidden Journey ride was the best 3D coaster I’ve ever been on.
emily522 - July 6, 2010
That is AWESOME!! I will confess I am a huge HP dork and so is my younger sister…even though we are both way too old to logically get excited, we always got excited when we saw the commercials for it.
bross09 - July 7, 2010
No one’s too old for HP.
emily522 - July 7, 2010
I said logically…it feels stupid to get excited over something like this but it is awesome…I have refallen in love with the books too b/c I got the whole series on tape and listened to it while going to bed on my ipod during college.
bross09 - July 8, 2010
And more recently, I’ve been more on edge about LeBron than the Browns haha.
emily522 - July 6, 2010
While on the subject, I can thank the Browns and Buckeyes for not having to care to much about LeBron’s decision. If he left it would be very disappointing, but I love following other sports too, making it a lot less “devastating.”
As my uncle often puts it: “We will always have the Buckeyes!”
Simmsinns - July 6, 2010
While I care about the Bucks, Indians, and Browns… I will be really upset if LeBron leaves.
emily522 - July 6, 2010
Yes it’s a pretty good blog. It has some good writers for all three Cleveland sports and OSU, and they also provide daily links to relevant articles from other websites. I’d also check out TheClevelandFan.com — they have a few crappy writers but most of them are worthwhile, and I’d say their content is better overall than WFNY. They also post all the articles from Paul Cousineau, who writes a fantastic Indians blog called The DiaTribe and is a frequent poster on LGT.
Buckeye Brad - July 6, 2010
Ok. Thank you.
emily522 - July 6, 2010
Since you were on vacation a bit, not sure if you caught that SBN Cleveland launched. There have been some original pieces written on there as well; it’s not just a mere summary of the SBN sites.
SBN Cleveland
Chris Pokorny - July 6, 2010
I knew there was a SBN Cleveland coming out, but I assumed it was a summary of the sites. Glad to see I’m wrong. I’ll check it out.
emily522 - July 6, 2010
Just wondering, do you know if they plan on launching (or partnering) an Ohio State blog again?
I liked We Will Always Have Tempe, and really loved the Buckeye Battle Cry. It seemed like the guys at tBBC brought a whole community with them, and it was great to be apart of. I was sad to see them go, and the community as well. I have been to their website a few times since being independent again, but as many of you probably agree, it’s just not the same. SBN blogs’ format and interface (for the most part) does a great job for community discussion, especially across blogs.
Simmsinns - July 6, 2010
Agreed. I was on tBBC today. It’s not the same.
emily522 - July 6, 2010
We had a discussion about that not too long ago — mostly gahnki and I — but the problems with the previous Buckeye blogs was that their content wasn’t that good, and they didn’t offer anything that current blogs don’t have. tBBC was terrible — the guys running it were idiots, at least in my opinion. All they did was bash every other team and the members were obnoxious to any other fan who visited the site. I hope that we can get a good OSU blog on here but that certainly wasn’t it.
Buckeye Brad - July 6, 2010
They had more articles on songs then the Bucks.
SpecialBrownie - July 6, 2010
Personally, I liked the community over at the tBBC. I definitely didn’t think it was a terrible blog. Perhaps my standards are not nearly as refined. The atmosphere was like night and day compared to here, but I always thought that it was fitting, with one being pro other being college. I had no problems with the way the ran the sight, but then again, I was never aware of the violations.
As a former regular over there, I think that your view of the members is slightly misconstrued. They handled trolls very upfront, often calling them out and addressing directly, in a less than civil manner. Not exactly how I’d do it (preferring just to delete and ban them immediately) but I didn’t think it was that bad. But, a lot of these SBN blogs have major troll problems, and I respected the fact that at least they did something, rather then ignore the situation (i.e. FTS, I still like it over there though).
Still, a lot of good discussion happened over there (even with opposing fans), and the live game threads were fun.
Lastly, the primary thing they brought that no current blog on SBN has, was an active Ohio State fan community that could discuss current Ohio State happenings. Personally, that’s my favorite thing about SBN.
Simmsinns - July 7, 2010
Please ignore my ridiculous typos.
Simmsinns - July 7, 2010
I agree that FTS doesn’t do enough about trolls — and I tried to discuss that with the moderator there but he doesn’t seen to want to do anything — but I think they should be handled more like we do here and at LGT, which is to warn them then delete it if they don’t stop. But they were immature about it, and got into ridiculous arguments like you see on cleveland.com and espn.com and other message boards full of idiots. And they even acted that way to people who weren’t trolls, who were just fans trying to have a discussion and they BBC guys were being immature with them.
It seemed to me that many people there represented everything that is bad about OSU fans (and there are a lot of idiot OSU fans out there). Before the Rose Bowl they were whining about not getting any respect, but then after they won they were bashing Oregon and their fans and not giving them any respect. It was just a bunch of I-told-you-so chest-pounding. Very immature, and that turned me off. I even tried to say something to them but was rudely insulted.
Buckeye Brad - July 7, 2010
It’s true those things happened and I can understand your point of view.
I just disagree with the degree to which it occurred, I think. I was actually one of the people (among others) over there that openly welcomed opposing fans looking to discuss questions they had regarding Ohio State. I also thanked the civil Oregon fans that came to congratulate our Rose Bowl victory. As a regular, I just think I saw more of the good side of that blog, but that’s only my opinion.
Anyway, I’m intrigued at the idea of a new, much more refined, Ohio State blog ran by some long time SBN users, that seem to have a great idea of what makes a great blog. I have no doubt it would be much better than any we’ve had in the past, as long as there is an active community. The quality of the content will be irrelevant if no one is reading it. I don’t think that’d be a problem at all though.
Simmsinns - July 7, 2010
Quality content is what usually works the best. I wouldn’t visit this site if Chris, rufio, etc didn’t know what they were talking about. I think the same would hold true for a lot of posters.
Roger Dorn - July 7, 2010
Agreed. They usually go hand in hand. Quality content leading to an active community.
Simmsinns - July 7, 2010
The pressure’s on.
Chris Pokorny - July 7, 2010
To Simmsinns:
I don’t have any inside knowledge on a Buckeyes blog launching; our Buckeyes guy at SBN Cleveland has shown some interest in starting one up. I’m sure the powers that be are actively considering an Ohio State blog, but after three “reboots” already, which is a rarity (if not a first) for the network, I can understand why they might be holding off on just establishing a new site ASAP.
Anyone:
If any of you guys are collectively interested, feel free to get together (i.e. over email) and put together some form of sales pitch, such as why you think the previous attempts have failed and why you could make a difference, along with any Buckeye-related writing you may have done in the past. There’s never a guarantee you’d get the gig, but if you have a genuine interest it doesn’t hurt to throw your name in the hat.
Chris Pokorny - July 7, 2010
I would love to see BB and gahnki get something going. I would be all over that.
Bernie19Kosar - July 7, 2010
@ Chris
Thanks. It’s definitely understandable that they’d be hesitant. But still think an Ohio State blog is a necessity for SBN. It appears we’re the only major college without one on the network.
@ BB and Gahnki (and co.)
I read over your previous discussion about the Ohio State blogs. I didn’t agree with everything, but I definitely think you guys could make a great one yourselves, and I’d be happy to be a regular reader and member of the community.
Simmsinns - July 7, 2010
I would read that blog.
And maybe do some play breakdown if it hadn’t already been covered by Gahnki and/or elsewhere.
rufio - July 7, 2010
I would certainly be interested in helping but I don’t have the time to make the commitment to running the site. Plus, I like to keep up with the Indians, Browns and Cavs as well so it’s hard for me to focus a lot of time on one sport.
Another suggestions for finding good people to run the blog would be one of the Buckeye writers over at The Rivalry, Esq. (SBN’s Big Ten blog). They have quite a few good Buckeye writers there and I’ll bet that one of them would like to help with an OSU blog.
Buckeye Brad - July 7, 2010
I agree about the cleveland fan. It is definitely well run even though a few writers are duds. I like the whole daily dish Idea and when I was away from cleveland, it helped me feel in the loop…Plus, my dad works with the guy that runs it…maybe I have a bias, but I find it to be good stuff.
bross09 - July 7, 2010
if you ever want to venture off of here, I like them. I also like the cleveland fan and how they cover so many areas.
bross09 - July 7, 2010
No Carlton Mitchell?!?!?!
That will get fixed once EA Sports sends out the first roster update.
theW0LF - July 6, 2010
Gosh, half the players would be ruined if these ratings were accurate.
I´d be checking some caribbean accounts for compensation elsewhere.
mooncamping - July 7, 2010
Do you ever play Madden online?
Chris Pokorny - July 7, 2010
Yes, he does. Havn’t you seen the Brown’s user who’s undefeated when he uses his patented “22-fullback” formation?
BrownDawg1409 - July 7, 2010
How did you come upon the repetitive 25 dive strategy? We used to run that all game long. You don´t get a lot of style points in football, you know.
mooncamping - July 8, 2010
whoever has a PS3 add me, my PSN is bluewolf35, we can play some madden 11 :)
lightninmcqueen - July 8, 2010
I thought Cribbs was just a kick return/wildcat guy and the #3 or 4 receiver for you guys.
And now he is the highest rated receiver on the team? Are they planning on making him a bigger part of the offense?
JoeCB1991 - July 10, 2010
Cribbs is not the #1 receiver on this team. Massaquoi is our top WR, and Robiskie and Stuckey are next in line. Cribbs is probably our #4 receiver and he should be used more in special players, with a mix of running and receiving, than as a typical WR. He just doesn’t have the skills for that.
Buckeye Brad - July 11, 2010
unfortunately its very hard for madden ratings to reflect this.
notthatnoise - July 11, 2010
It is surprising that the #4 receiver would be a 78 while the starter is a 75.
I wonder where he will be on the depth chart, and how they will come up with some plays that use him in the game like the Browns do in real life. I remember when I looked through the Browns playbook a while ago on Madden 10 I didn’t see a wildcat formation but it will probably be there now.
JoeCB1991 - July 11, 2010
It’s called “Flash” on Madden, and it auto-starts your 3rd receiver as the QB, so with the update, Stuckey is the default until you sub him in.
North Coast Flea - July 11, 2010
It’s not surprising because that’s the only way they can showcase his playmaking ability. He’s not the best receiver, but because that’s the position he’s labeled at, they need to adjust his stats accordingly to his ability and that just shoves him up the depth at his position even though he’s technically a bad receiver
SpecialBrownie - July 11, 2010
There is no “shallow crossing route” rating on Madden.
rufio - July 12, 2010
Cribbs already played a decent-sized role as a WR, but he isn’t a traditional WR. More of an H-back playing WR.
Madden is not real life, and they probably lack the ability to mimic what he actually does.
rufio - July 11, 2010
