It's time for the third annual Dawgs By Nature Fantasy Football League! There will be 12 teams again this year, but this year we are making the switch to using the CBSSports.com platform.

I want everyone who is interested in participating in the official league to respond in this thread. I will represent one of the 12 teams again, which means their are 11 spots available. I will give favoritism to some of the community members with more tenure or who have been active in the official league in the past. With that said, I will make sure that a few spots are reserved for members who have never been in the league by random draw.
NOTE: The official DBN league is 100% free to participate in.
As a reader and member of Dawgs By Nature, we are able to offer you a special discount for a CBSSports.com Fantasy Football Commissioner League of your own. The regular price for such a league is a whopping $179.99, but if you register through this link, you can have your very own league for 50% off at $89.99.
"WHOA, I'M NOT PAYING FOR A LEAGUE! I'LL JUST DO A FREE ONE!"
I'm not telling you that you have to. The reality is that there are many solid fantasy football services out there that will suit your needs. However, if you have ever experienced CBSSports.com League before, then you know they offer some of the most customizable and in-depth features available. Ideally, you wouldn't foot the bill for an $89.99 league all by yourself. Instead, think of it maybe as a tool you can use with your co-workers at the office, your family and friends at home, or heck, if you're really willing to gamble, some of the other members here at Dawgs By Nature.
If it's a 12-person league, the price is about $7.49 per person. I paid more than that to be part of a private SB Nation league a few years back with the Commissioner features, and for me it was always the little things that made me appreciate the service. With this offer, you also get a 14-day free trial to see if it is right for you. Here are just some of the special features that CBSSports.com offers:
If you are interested in purchasing a league and have any questions about what else CBSSports.com offers compared to the Yahoo's or ESPN's of the world, please let me know and I will do my best to find the answer. Also, if you're not interested but you know a die-hard friend who used CBSSports.com in the past or is looking for a heavily-customizable league, feel free to point them to this offer.
As part of our Fantasy Football talk this year, we're going to be doing one post a week (until the regular season starts) related to the topic of fantasy football. Those posts will range anywhere from the value Browns players have as fantasy players, smack talk from our official league, or even an open discussion of topics such as, "who should I draft, 'Byron Leftwich or Joe Flacco?' The correct answer would be neither, but that's beside the point.
CBSSports.com is an SB Nation partner and paying sponsor of the SB Nation football communities. This post is one of a series of sponsor endorsed posts related to the CBSSports.com Fantasy Football Commissioner League.

By the way, if you’re not interested in purchasing a league, I’d appreciate it if you don’t go ahead and make a comment saying, “who the hell purchases leagues when there are free services?” A lot of people won’t be interested, but if there are any members that are, this is a nice little savings opportunity for them.
Now then, start making your wishes to be in the official DBN league known!
Chris Pokorny - July 21, 2010
I think CBS sucks for fantasy leagues but I’m definately in (and I know we have to use them so it’s okay — I’m already in two other leagues that use CBS). At least it will be better than the site we used before. Yahoo is still the best, though.
I need to make up for my sorry showing last season. I’m not drafting old running backs with my first two picks again!
Buckeye Brad - July 21, 2010
Thanks for the positive endorsement.
Sorry, we need better competition this year. Your request to be in the league is denied.
Chris Pokorny - July 21, 2010
Ouch! I guess I deserved that.
Buckeye Brad - July 22, 2010
i didnt mind fleaflicker. it worked out ok for me. yahoo is the best tho.
kjc - July 22, 2010
I’d like to join but I need a tutorial first, I might bomb and this comment could be a total red flag to you Chris haha, sorry.
SpecialBrownie - July 21, 2010
I don’t get your comment. Are you inferring that you’ve never played fantasy football before, or is there some inside joke that I missed?
Chris Pokorny - July 21, 2010

Ah, ic. Well then, the first thing that I think is important is that you need to be knowledgeable of every team in the NFL, and you have to accept the fact that drafting players on teams not on the Browns is OK. I made the mistake in my first season waaaaaaaay back when to draft Tim Couch, William Green, Rickey Dudley, Kevin Johnson, etc. My team blew because I didn’t understand the concept.
We usually play a Head to Head league, so let’s say there are 12 teams in that league from DBN. Here is the basic set-up:
1. After everyone is registered, a draft date is set. Every person in the league tries to attend that draft (usually in a Java or Flash applet in your browser), and you have maybe around 13 draft picks or something. The first team on the board makes their pick (i.e. Maurice Jones-Drew), then maybe the second team takes Peyton Manning, etc. The draft goes back and forth until 13 rounds are completed.
2. When the regular season starts, you will face a new opponent each week with the team you drafted. The goal is to accumulate the most possible points for your team; at least enough to have more points than your opponent that week. Generally, you are allowed to start 1 QB, 2 RB’s, 2 WR’s, 1 TE, 1 Utility, 1 K, and 1 DEF TEAM. Everyone else that you drafted is on your bench for that week, and they cannot score any points for your team.
3. Every league has a different point system, but here is something basic that should give you the idea:
A league might say that a quarterback gets the following for their performance —
+6 points for every TD thrown or rushed for
+1 point for every 50 yards passing
+2 points for a two-point conversion
-2 points for each interception or fumble lost
Now, let’s say Peyton Manning throws for 3 touchdowns, 259 yards passing, and 1 interception, and he happens to be your starting quarterback. You would be awarded 21 points for his performance.
4. At the end of the season, the “X” best number of teams make the playoffs. This usually occurs near Week 13 of the regular season, so the playoffs can take place from Week 14 to Week 16. People usually don’t like to play fantasy football in Week 17, since that is when a lot of teams rest their starters. For example, your fantasy team would be screwed if you had Manning as your only QB threat and he didn’t play in your Week 17 “Championship” game.
There are many other intricacies to it too. You can trade players to other teams. Each week, you can add/drop players as you see fit.
It’s not for everyone, but there’s definitely a huge interest for it out there.
Chris Pokorny - July 21, 2010
Well, if there are spots open, count me in
SpecialBrownie - July 22, 2010
As always, I am in.
I forget who it was last season, but someone beat me down in the playoffs. Was it Dorn?
Bernie19Kosar - July 21, 2010
Yep, Dorn beat you down in the semi’s.
I had the best record overall for the second straight year, but my team tanked in the finals to give Dorn the overall title as well.
Chris Pokorny - July 22, 2010
Team KJC
Id like to be in the league again 3rd straight year. Acually had a decent team last year.
kjc - July 22, 2010
I was in last season and I did it on autodraft which was really hard to configure on fleaflicker. Depending on when you do your draft I hope I can make it again but I understand if you want full participation and leave me out. Everything’s cool.
skipkirk - July 22, 2010
I’m in if you have an open spot. I like the CBS format, been on there the past few years and I never had any issues with it.
Joey_D - July 22, 2010
I’m in. I boycotted all other platforms besides yahoo after a terrible experiment with ESPN.
I haven’t tried CBS in years though, I’ll give this a shot.
Ryan Kelsey - July 22, 2010
I’m totally in this year. took a year off from fantasy football last year but I’m ready to dive back in.
notthatnoise - July 22, 2010
I’d like to return.
And I’d like to express my non-paid endorsement of CBS Sportsline’s Fantasy Football platform. I’m in a league that’s going on it 8th year and we’ve used it since day 1. I prefer it over Yahoo, ESPN, and Fleaflicker, and consider it on par with Fanball (the paid version).
rolub - July 22, 2010
My squad fared pretty well last year in the league and, more importantly, I had a blast participating with the DBN crew. With me in the league, you get a guy who works the waiver wire hard, is informed and likes unicorns (ok, kidding about the last part—I like dive bars in Brooklyn on Sundays that have the NFL ticket). Love to be in the league again . . .
Les Fleurs Du Mal - July 22, 2010
I would like to defend the title.
Roger Dorn - July 22, 2010 via mobile
oh i would absolutely love to be considered for this league….
sleepy042 - July 22, 2010
It definitely sounds interesting, but based on the mentioned features, it seems Yahoo! Sports offers those now. I’m guessing in oder to keep their strangle hold on players like me, they just last season added the live scoring too. But yeah, of the 7 bulleted features, Yahoo! offers all 7 of them for free now. (I know they used to charge 2 seasons ago for some of them.)
The other thing is simply my addiction to Yahoo! Sport’s interface for their fantasy. I started out on it, tried 3 others (ESPN, NFL, CBS) over the years and they simply did not compare in ease of use, at lease for me.
I won’t start the Unofficial DBN Fan League until all the slots are filled for this one though.
Good luck & have fun to everyone playing this season!
Simmsinns - July 22, 2010
Personally I have always found the ESPN format to be the most efficient…with football and Baseball…Yahoo is a pain and for a while I liked to get 4-5 teams in just public leagues and ESPN is a lot better for that…plus I favor their drafting platform over Yahoo’s…but thats me personally.
bross09 - July 22, 2010
Here is some info on what can differentiate CBS vs. Yahoo:
• Yahoo doesn’t offer any customization of the homepage with respect to colors, videos, pictures, and headlines.
• Yahoo’s free leagues can have up to 20 teams, while CBS can have up to 30 teams.
• On Yahoo, you can’t score individual positions separately, and there are also limits to setting specific scoring range. There’s some more flexibility with CBS.
• Yahoo can’t have multiple matchups per period (i.e. doubleheaders)
• CBS has many different statistical variables to help create new customized stat metrics.
• Yahoo’s free leagues don’t offer a record book, finance tracker, draft kit, the ability to protest trades, or the ability to get weekly scouting reports.
Chris Pokorny - July 22, 2010
As for fantasy football in general this season, with out giving to much of your brilliant draft strategy away, how are you looking at for this season? Or perhaps your possible sleepers, break out players, reliable?
Knowing there is about a .001% chance I can get my running tandem of MJD, CJ, and RR back together, (it was a miracle last season, but I had no good WRs), I’d love just anyone of those guys this season. Still, I think if I got first pick in any draft, I’d have to go with Peterson. As much as I think CJ is better in the real sport, from a fantasy perspective, I see Peterson, just slightly as more of a sure thing. I think I see people overrating Gore and Mendenhall, but only time will tell. I might start thinking about #1 WRs before ever grabbing either of those two. And just after that you drop into Fantasy craziness. QBs are an options, 2nd or 3rd tier backs, it’s impossible to tell. Will the WRs out perform what they give you?
Only one thing is certain: If your drafting in the top 5, NEVER draft a quarterback!
Simmsinns - July 22, 2010
Not even Jake Delhomme?
Buckeye Brad - July 22, 2010
I would like to throw my name in the hat for consideration, and if not, because of the limited # of teams I would definitely like to go in on a b-squad or something unofficial.
doggrad87 - July 22, 2010
I’m new to the board but a huge Browns and Fantasy Football addict, so I would love to be included or at least be put in the drawing for a chance.
Drexel Dawg - July 22, 2010
put me in, i am an active fantasy football player and will be there for the whole season. looks like a lot of interest, maybe we need multiple free teams.
rockybrown - July 22, 2010
I agree! I wouldn’t mind being in a second group of teams if I didn’t make the first drawing…
GBatch0921 - July 23, 2010
what do we get if we win? an lifesize farrah fawcet poster with some mooncamping mentionables?
sleepy042 - July 22, 2010
dear mooncamping,
can you please be involved in this?
notthatnoise - July 22, 2010
Do you not remember how much mooncamping hates fantasy football?
Buckeye Brad - July 22, 2010
i know, but a guy can hope.
notthatnoise - July 23, 2010
i am quite the stalker on SBnation (read every single day, but rarely comment), although i wish i was more active. if there is one thing that would get me to break my stalker habits and join the community, it would be fantasy football.
also, i’m a big fan of the CBS format and i use it in other leagues. glad to see it’s being used here.
superbacker56 - July 22, 2010
Glad to have you.
Bernie19Kosar - July 23, 2010
Around here I mean. I have no control over the Fantasy Football league.
Bernie19Kosar - July 23, 2010
I’m a fan of the CBS / NFL.com format as well. I tried Yahoo for fantasy baseball this year, and it’s a pain in the ass.
golanbatrac - July 23, 2010
What, no comment form Moony yet about how Madden and fantasy football are ruining the chances of the true talents of the leagues from playing?
BrownDawg1409 - July 22, 2010
We’ve internalized him, and thus he no longer needs to make these points. We’ll make them ourselves, with or without his presence. Truly a measure of mooncamping’s success, that.
RelapsingDawgCatcher - July 24, 2010
Ok Chris, you made it sound interesting. $8 isn’t horrible at all. I thought it was gunna be a lot higher.
I would like to be on the pending list, please.
When will you make your choices and let us know who’s in? I can send you my quarters right away. :)
Brownie's Year - July 22, 2010
I think you’re misunderstanding. The DBN league is free, but if anyone wants to buy a pay league for their friends then they can get a discount. We’re just doing the free league, though.
Buckeye Brad - July 22, 2010
AHHH I missed the “Note”. Thanks
Brownie's Year - July 22, 2010
I will do it but I know that Im not very active. If you need someone let me know.
drunkrooster - July 22, 2010
Since It’s free you can probably. Count me in. I hope you don’t mind if I’m underage until October. Tell me if you would like another member cuz this sounds like fun.
brownsboy14 - July 23, 2010 via mobile
I’m in.
golanbatrac - July 23, 2010
(Points)
This guy says he’s cutting the Internet, and now POOF, he’s volunteering for fantasy football leagues.
Chris Pokorny - July 23, 2010
Well, it’s not like it’s a rotisserie baseball league where you have to set your lineup every day. I can add an occasional Wednesday to my weekend when there’s a free agent I need.
golanbatrac - July 23, 2010
Hi, my name is golanbatrac,,, and I’m a DBN-aholic. ;-)

Admitted.

TheDriveStillHurts - July 23, 2010
I would love to be a part of the official DBN Fantasy Football League! Please throw my name in.
GBatch0921 - July 23, 2010
i’m interested this year. what happens if someone misses the draft though? will it autopick based on your player rankings if you can’t participate?
Dawg Nuts - July 23, 2010
Yes, this much I know
SpecialBrownie - July 24, 2010
I can either set up to have a robot AutoPick based on rankings, or I can have not AutoPicker and then I as the commissioner would be able to make their pick. I’ll probably let the robot do the work.
Chris Pokorny - July 24, 2010
okay, i’d definitely like to be up for consideration then. thanks.
Dawg Nuts - July 25, 2010
I was in last years league.. Talk about a tuff crowd!! Got a schooling from you guys. Would love to try again though. Learned alot !! But would love to have some payback this year!
Locnar - July 26, 2010
I would have posted earlier but was out of town on vacation..
Locnar - July 26, 2010
I would love to get in. I am an avid fantasy fan, and I never quit till the season is over.
