I think CBS sucks for fantasy leagues but I’m definately in (and I know we have to use them so it’s okay — I’m already in two other leagues that use CBS). At least it will be better than the site we used before. Yahoo is still the best, though.
I need to make up for my sorry showing last season. I’m not drafting old running backs with my first two picks again!

Ah, ic. Well then, the first thing that I think is important is that you need to be knowledgeable of every team in the NFL, and you have to accept the fact that drafting players on teams not on the Browns is OK. I made the mistake in my first season waaaaaaaay back when to draft Tim Couch, William Green, Rickey Dudley, Kevin Johnson, etc. My team blew because I didn’t understand the concept.
We usually play a Head to Head league, so let’s say there are 12 teams in that league from DBN. Here is the basic set-up:
1. After everyone is registered, a draft date is set. Every person in the league tries to attend that draft (usually in a Java or Flash applet in your browser), and you have maybe around 13 draft picks or something. The first team on the board makes their pick (i.e. Maurice Jones-Drew), then maybe the second team takes Peyton Manning, etc. The draft goes back and forth until 13 rounds are completed.
2. When the regular season starts, you will face a new opponent each week with the team you drafted. The goal is to accumulate the most possible points for your team; at least enough to have more points than your opponent that week. Generally, you are allowed to start 1 QB, 2 RB’s, 2 WR’s, 1 TE, 1 Utility, 1 K, and 1 DEF TEAM. Everyone else that you drafted is on your bench for that week, and they cannot score any points for your team.
3. Every league has a different point system, but here is something basic that should give you the idea:
A league might say that a quarterback gets the following for their performance —
+6 points for every TD thrown or rushed for
+1 point for every 50 yards passing
+2 points for a two-point conversion
-2 points for each interception or fumble lost
Now, let’s say Peyton Manning throws for 3 touchdowns, 259 yards passing, and 1 interception, and he happens to be your starting quarterback. You would be awarded 21 points for his performance.
4. At the end of the season, the “X” best number of teams make the playoffs. This usually occurs near Week 13 of the regular season, so the playoffs can take place from Week 14 to Week 16. People usually don’t like to play fantasy football in Week 17, since that is when a lot of teams rest their starters. For example, your fantasy team would be screwed if you had Manning as your only QB threat and he didn’t play in your Week 17 “Championship” game.
There are many other intricacies to it too. You can trade players to other teams. Each week, you can add/drop players as you see fit.
It’s not for everyone, but there’s definitely a huge interest for it out there.

I was in last season and I did it on autodraft which was really hard to configure on fleaflicker. Depending on when you do your draft I hope I can make it again but I understand if you want full participation and leave me out. Everything’s cool.

With me in the league, you get a guy who works the waiver wire hard, is informed and likes unicorns (ok, kidding about the last part—I like dive bars in Brooklyn on Sundays that have the NFL ticket). It definitely sounds interesting, but based on the mentioned features, it seems Yahoo! Sports offers those now. I’m guessing in oder to keep their strangle hold on players like me, they just last season added the live scoring too. But yeah, of the 7 bulleted features, Yahoo! offers all 7 of them for free now. (I know they used to charge 2 seasons ago for some of them.)
The other thing is simply my addiction to Yahoo! Sport’s interface for their fantasy. I started out on it, tried 3 others (ESPN, NFL, CBS) over the years and they simply did not compare in ease of use, at lease for me.
I won’t start the Unofficial DBN Fan League until all the slots are filled for this one though.

Personally I have always found the ESPN format to be the most efficient…with football and Baseball…Yahoo is a pain and for a while I liked to get 4-5 teams in just public leagues and ESPN is a lot better for that…plus I favor their drafting platform over Yahoo’s…but thats me personally.

Here is some info on what can differentiate CBS vs. Yahoo:
• Yahoo doesn’t offer any customization of the homepage with respect to colors, videos, pictures, and headlines.
• Yahoo’s free leagues can have up to 20 teams, while CBS can have up to 30 teams.
• On Yahoo, you can’t score individual positions separately, and there are also limits to setting specific scoring range. There’s some more flexibility with CBS.
• Yahoo can’t have multiple matchups per period (i.e. doubleheaders)
• CBS has many different statistical variables to help create new customized stat metrics.
• Yahoo’s free leagues don’t offer a record book, finance tracker, draft kit, the ability to protest trades, or the ability to get weekly scouting reports.

As for fantasy football in general this season, with out giving to much of your brilliant draft strategy away, how are you looking at for this season? Or perhaps your possible sleepers, break out players, reliable?
Knowing there is about a .001% chance I can get my running tandem of MJD, CJ, and RR back together, (it was a miracle last season, but I had no good WRs), I’d love just anyone of those guys this season. Still, I think if I got first pick in any draft, I’d have to go with Peterson. As much as I think CJ is better in the real sport, from a fantasy perspective, I see Peterson, just slightly as more of a sure thing. I think I see people overrating Gore and Mendenhall, but only time will tell. I might start thinking about #1 WRs before ever grabbing either of those two. And just after that you drop into Fantasy craziness. QBs are an options, 2nd or 3rd tier backs, it’s impossible to tell. Will the WRs out perform what they give you?
Only one thing is certain: If your drafting in the top 5, NEVER draft a quarterback!
