In a particular little tidbit on the OBR today, Cleveland Browns RT reportedly suggested to the coaching staff that he play a little bit of defense as well:
Tony Pashos is projected as the Browns starting right tackle, but coaches have also talked about using him at guard. Pashos said he told the coaches he'd like to give defensive end a try. The 6-6, 325-pound eight-year veteran said he was serious.
I'm sure the coaches wouldn't mind giving him some reps at guard, but if he's going to start, I can't imagine the staff giving him any work on the defensive line.

Off topic, but…I was reading older threads and while a great debate, the energy discussion missed the key equation as to what is driving current construction and energy prices in this country. Despite all the stimulus money, loan guarantees for new nuclear, etc., what is driving the current energy mix equation in this country right now is shale gas. The price of natural gas drives the price of electricity and the recent shale fracturing process to obtain natural gas has made the US’s reliance on either Canadian gas or LNG moot. These wells are expected to be productive for up to 75 years and have driven natural gas prices to less than 1/3 of what they were 18-24 months ago. As such, construction of plants that use anything other than natural gas are just not cost beneficial unless you live in a state that still regulates electricity and provides a rate of return on construction regardless of the fuel source. Sorry for posting this, but after reading the entire thread, I saw the lack of discussion on shale gas as a “miss” from a group that rarely misses anything (being astute Brown’s fans, of course).

Most welcome. We had a guy from Devon give a depressing presentation on shale gas to our nuclear executive team. It was truly eye-opening and depressing with respect to a near term nuclear resurgence. It is also hurting the Babcock and Wilcox effort to build small modular reactors (which was planned to be centered in Euclid). Any new nuclear plants are going to be built in the south…at least at first.

What are you from Canada? I have studied this issue since the 70’s. There is no silver bullet to this issue in my mind. So we build all theses gas power power plants. What happens if the projections are wrong? Say we run out of Shale provided natural gas in like 50 years what do we do with all these gas power plants we built? Won’t that give the Canada a big leg up? It takes a while to get a power plant through all the red tape thanks to the enviromental lobby. So essentially all we did was juts push the problem onto future genrations. Oh do I need to bring up the global warming crowd and their nifty idea for a carbon tax. I don’t see them lining up to support this idea as well.

I am from OH and do NOT think we should build gas plants. All I was doing was trying to fill in what I saw was a gap in an earlier discussion. Personally, I think nuclear is the way to go (imagine that), but the availability and low cost of natural gas is currently killing that option in de-regulated states. In fact, I also support a price on carbon since that makes utilities with nuclear assets more valued, wich is good for my stock. We get to study this issue every day since it drives the value of our company.
You must have completely mis-read my post to think I was promoting natural gas or that I am a Canuck. BTW, almost half of Ohio is on a shale bed and is being viewed (along with PA) as a prime opportunity for gas drilling. Sorry that I struck a nerve.

I have been in the oil and gas industry since ‘02 and I can tell you that while the marcellus shale play is moving forward, its not been easy. Problems with treating and removing the frac water/mud is costing companies too much money. State regulations on these fluids are still being determined. Especially in PA. While natural gas may be a viable option short term, it won’t be long term. There will probably be a few more plays that surface over the next few years as drilling, completion, and production technology continue to improve, but gas, like oil, will run out eventually. However, you are correct that it does drive other utility costs. It also drives some manufacturing costs as many large plants utilize natural gas for production.

The first thing that comes to mind after reading the headline: High School Football. As in, if the Browns start playing one or two more guys on both sides of the ball, that’s what everyone is going to start thinking. You play guys both ways for one of two reasons. Either they’re super talented and it would be a crime not to take advantage of them on O and D, or you’re short on talent at key positions so you do it out of necessity. They did it last year cuz they needed help in the secondary, but that shouldn’t be necessary this year.
