Around the Pound (5/2): Special Minicamp Round-Up Edition

When was the last time we had an edition of Around the Pound? It's been too long, but it's back today for a special super-sized edition that is focused on all the news and nuggets on the Cleveland Browns rookie minicamp this weekend and the team's draft selections.

Aroundthepound_medium

We're Not the Only Ones Who Look at YouTube

On the Secondary: In Terry Pluto's Sunday column, in order to learn about safety T.J. Ward, he did some research and watched some YouTube videos. Pluto probably saw some of the same videos we did on Ward, where he would launch his body full-force into his opponents to make crushing tackles. Pluto states that the reason teams didn't have Ward higher on their draft boards is because they are concerned with his injury history.

Star-divide

With the Browns taking a second safety (Larry Asante) in the draft who is known more so for tackling than coverage, Pluto believes the Browns we'll see a lot of rotation in the secondary...

[The situation] makes me think Michael Adams or even newcomer Sheldon Brown will see some time at safety -- or at least covering slot receivers.

On the Running Backs: Pluto received some quotes from a pro scout on RB Montario Hardesty:

"He has an excellent spin move to break open. I like his vision, he picks holes well. He falls forward when tackled. He is very underrated as a receiver, does a good job in that area. I also think he's a decent blocker. I like how he fights for every yard, and he's a good kid. Like with Ward, if he stays healthy, he'll be a good player."

Still, was it worth trading up to acquire Hardesty? Pluto cites that the Patriots were reported as being interested in the Tennessee running back. If you can say one thing about the Browns' draft, it is that they got the guys they wanted, without sacrificing anything in next year's draft.

For more on the rookies, including the wonderful character of Joe Haden and the accuracy of QB Colt McCoy, check out the rest of Pluto's column.

Setting the Stage

In total, there were 53 players at rookie minicamp, broken down like this:

  • 8 draft picks
  • 10 undrafted free agents
  • 35 tryout players

Steve Doerschuk of the Canon Repository has a full list of the players that attended here. What I found interesting is that WR Dion Morton of Colorado State is 5-8 and weighs just 160 pounds. I don't consider that to be skinny, but he would definitely be an outlier as an NFL player. Grossi highlighted some of the local players trying out for the Browns:

Among the players trying out are local products Andre Evans, defensive back from Glenville and Eastern Kentucky, defensive back Bradley Jones of Canton McKinley and Cincinnati, receiver Robby Parris of St. Ignatius and Notre Dame, and defensive back Royce Adams of Glenville and Purdue.

Ouch! Punter Takes a Shot

Imagine you are tryout punter Jonathan Thoma. You know that you might be doing some drills at rookie minicamp, but nothing too extravagant beyond punting the football. The last thing you'd hope for is to be bowled over by a 6-7, 300 pound "monster."

Thoma, of Ohio State, held a blocking pad in the drill and Clifford Geathers was supposed to hit it and maneuver past, but he just pancaked him.

"You appreciate his size and explosion," coach Eric Mangini said, "but not against guys 130 pounds [Thoma is listed at 200]. It's like turning a battleship. Once his momentum gets going, it's hard to move. So he's got to be conscious of the smaller kids on the playground."

Yes, seriously, take it a little easy on the punter not expecting to be flattened.

Brett Ratliff, and Shifting Positions for Rogers & Luavao

Head coach Eric Mangini stated that depending on the legal proceedings with DL Shaun Rogers, the team will explore playing him at both of the end positions. Regarding rookie guard Shawn Luavao, the team will give him some work at both guard positions, center, and long snapper. In other words, they want him to be as versatile as possible.

Mangini also stated that just because the Browns have three new quarterbacks doesn't mean that Brett Ratliff's time with the team is over.

"I'm not opposed to carrying four quarterbacks and Mike's not opposed to that, Tom [Heckert] is not opposed to that so I think he's got a great opportunity," Mangini said. "He really did a good job in my time in New York with him.

"I think there are definitely some things he could've done better last year that he and I have talked about. It's important for him to come out and show that he's still improving, but that's my anticipation is that he will. We will just see how it falls after that."

Rex Ryan on Rob Ryan: He Wanted CB Kyle Wilson

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan didn't name names, but as the Plain Dealer points out, it seems pretty clear that he was referring to Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan when praising CB Kyle Wilson:

Ryan didn't use Rob's name, but said, "There is somebody that I really know well for a long time that basically said that he was their guy and they picked a lot earlier than us. You can probably figure it out. That's who he wanted and then after practice, I'm like 'Yep. I guarantee you were right because this guy is the real deal."

Wilson ended up falling to the Jets at No. 29 overall, and Rex is already gushing over how Wilson will be a great player and be the team's starting nickelback.

Joe Thomas Part of a JaMarcus Russell Gag

From an ESPN article:

I’m on the record saying the Raiders should move on from the Russell era. However, I am impressed with how Russell handled himself on the field and with the media Friday. He tried hard to perform well and then he kept a positive attitude when talking about his situation.

The same can’t be said for Oakland employee Eddie Anderson, a former player. One of his chief duties is to hang with Russell. He stood by Russell’s side during his interview session. You'd think Oakland had just traded for Joe Thomas. I’ve never seen Russell get this much protection.

Only one problem: Joe Thomas doesn't need protection, everyone else does.

Off-Beat Notes

  • So much to talk about in off-beat stuff since last time's Around the Pound, so I'll jump right in with some more Ghostbusters 3 discussion. Once again, the holdup seems to be actor Bill Murray, who is calling it "just kind of a dreamy thing" regarding the thought of another movie. Ugh. Has a movie ever been in development hell like Ghostbusters 3 has been? You know what, maybe I should just stop talking about the movie unless there are reports that all of the actors have physically signed on the dotted line for being involved in the movie.
  • 425 I've continued loving the final season of LOST, and the excitement toward the end of the season has certainly been the crossovers that have started occurring with the Flashsideways storylines. You had to know that Desmond would be the catalyst in getting things going. There is no room for filler with just five hours of original programming left. I'm excited but bummed at the same time, since I also know that 24 (the TV series) will be coming to an end as well.
  • The studio has announced a July 20, 2012 release date for Batman 3. We should have an NBA Championship and a Super Bowl or two under our belts by then, right? That should be a big period for the movie industry, with The Avengers (May 4), Battleship (May 25), Star Trek 2 (June 29), and what will likely be the Bat's biggest competition: the Spider-Man reboot's reboot (July 3) also hitting the screen in 2012.
  • The ratings of FOX's American Idol continue to take a tumble, and an overall group that is less talented than the past few years, the other judges constantly interrupting Simon Cowell, and the bizarre behavior that has consumed host Ryan Seacrest, who can blame viewers? At least Glee, which now airs after Idol, has been posting series-best numbers since its return and has continued receiving critical acclaim.
  • The Office's Michael Scott, played by Steve Carrell, says he doesn't imagine being back after his contract runs out next year. That would be a huge loss for the series, but right now I'd pen it as an early contract negotiation ploy.
  • Speaking of Carrell, him and all of the other actors involved in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy  had agreed to take pay cuts to return for a sequel. Awesome, right? Not so, as the producers and Paramount could not agree on a budget for the film. Therefore, as of now, it is dead. Boooo.

The best of Brick Tamland

Sorry, here’s the link.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KakinPNRiDc

Christina Applegate is worth the watch.

Isn’t that Heckert in the photo and not Daboll?

Yeah, that’s what it looks like to me. That was the auto-inserted caption from the Associated Press.

The picture could seriously be a front cover of a B grade gangster movie DVD (Would’ve been A grade had Ryan not cut his hair).

In all seriousness, do we have the fattest front office combo in the NFL? (Mangini, Heckert and Holmgren)

What about KC with RAC and Charlie reunited? That is some beef.

They’re coaches.

technically mangini is a coach too. still, we have the biggest coaching staff and front office.

they are coaches. still, our coaching staff may be bigger.

Rob Ryan=Romeo

Weis>>Mangini

Daboll<<Todd Haley (who is skinny)

The big news here is Rob Ryan’s haircut.

I miss his hair already

I know.

We have a nice draft on the defensive side, then we go and cut off our Mojo.

Rob: WHY?

nnnnnnnnoooooooo!!!!!!
chubby zeus cut his locks!

Hey guys – Just FYI… You guys have the 11th oldest projected starting OL in the NFL…

http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2010/5/2/1454582/age-and-the-ol-why-the-2010

Interesting article there, thanks.

Our offensive line has a lot of years because of Womack and Pashos on the right side. If you substitute one of them for a guy like Luavao, we’d move down to about the 20th oldest projected OL in the NFL.

Yea, our two best lineman are quite young.

That just means our guys are wise.

This is wrong because Joe Thomas is ageless. Therefore an average cannot be made and all those who disagree will be pancaked.

He had a T-rex as a pet.

HE CUT THE LOCKS!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

…He is like Rex’s twin.

That sucks his hair made him look more intense. Especially when he was yelling and his looks were falling every which way.

Agreed. It’s a sad day for Browns fans everywhere.
Here’s a tear shed for one of my favorite Brownies
:’(

R.I.P. Rob’s Hair, we hardly know ye.
You will be missed.

In other news, Rotoworld has the worst writer known to professional sports.

Also, in more other news, Cooley is going to have to fight for his starting spot this season (stupid I know)

Do we make a trade? I know he’s previously said he’d hate to end up in Cleveland, but would he be so opposed if it meant a starting spot?

Ugh I don’t like hearing that the coaching staff might have preferred Kyle Wilson… Lets hope Haden turns out to be the better all around player…

Um, he better if he was picked at 7.

The only reason Haden was picked over Wilson was because he played in the SEC. If Wilson played in a bigger conference then I think he would have been the top CB taken

Don’t trash the WAC.

The argument could be made that if he played in a better conference, he would not be so highly thought of.

right. It may not necessarily be true, but we’ll never know, because Wilson never faced the level of competition Haden did.

That said, I can’t believe Kareem Jackson got drafted ahead of Wilson.

there were a LOT more reasons that Haden was drafted before wilson. wilson was the better cover corner but Haden is a much better tackler and can hold up well against the run.

Wilson was about equal in man, maybe a small bit better. Haden is better in zone.

yep. I agree, but wilson is also not a great tackler or great against the run. these things might not be essential, but it is good to have at least 1 CB who can play the run. Haden is the kind of guy in the draft that does many things well, including play the run.

This burito is good…but filling…

Not the most flattering picture of Rob Ryan.

there are no flattering pictures of rob ryan

Shouldn’t this be, “there are only flattering pictures of Rob Ryan.”

Yes. That is the only way to answer that.

This is pretty funny, I had really long hair up til yesterday too, when it’s 80 inside it’s too hot for long hair.

OK, bakc to more important issues!
Would love to see the Browns move Rogers to the other end and let Ahtybin play. He earned it!
Would also like to see Cleveland make an offer to the Giants for Barry Cofield, NT. He’s their starter but they seem no longer interested in him.
Rogers, Robaire and Rubin should be pretty formidable with Cofield backing them up…..and BONUS!….Cofield’s from Cleve. Hts. H.S.
I say we draw up FREE AHTYBIN signs and get us a local to root for.

Sharks won again!!!!!

Sharky’s Year

this looks like rob ryan 1 haircut and 100lbs ago.

I know i’ve been giving you crap, but i’m rooting for the sharks to beat the wings.

-WR Robby Parris, Notre Dame, looks like a good complement to Mohammad Massaquoi at wide out.
-Deverin Gernalds, Mississipi, and Brennan McFadden, Utah State, look like able bodies for guard.
-Mark Ellis is a heavyweight champion wrestler from Missouri, might make a good DT.
-Austin Giles, Boston College, looks strong for DT, needs to add some weight.
-Mattin Tevaseu, UNLV, looks crazy strong, for an extra body for NG.
-Verne as in versatile linebackers: seems like a nice batch to choose from: ILB Jon Dempsey, Louisville. ILB Brandon McLaughlin, Maine. ILB Daniel Howard, Texas Tech. OLB Eryk Anders, Alabama. OLB Jeffrey Smart, Colorado. Is how I project them.
-DB Matthew Harris, Arkansas, looks like an interesting body with a good head, maybe as a project for cornerback or outside linebacker.
-Looks like more challengers for TE: Ryan Moya, UCLA, soft hands? Brandon Harrington, Chadron State, looks freaky strong.

How much college football do you watch to find these players no one has heard of? The only one on that list I’ve heard of is Parris.

I’m guessing none.

I honestly think he just scouts the depth charts looking for players who have the measurements he looks for at various positions. I highly doubt he’s seen most of those players in an actual football game.

It’s the measurements that make someone a contender for CB/OLB that scare me.

I haven’t heard of really any either…except for Anders, but thats partially because he was on a NC team.

I don´t know. Who invited them? It just seems like they´re the type of players, I might find a few I could work with from. Sporty, speedy linebackers. Not overly tall defensive tackle proportioned linemen that have a naturally strong build, and aren´t just weight room strong.
Corners and safeties that aren´t so small that they must shy away from contact, and be cleverly called cover corners. Maybe there´s a lucky pick or two among them.

Moon, are you a fan of any college football programs?

I have favorites, need to find the one and only though.

Who are your faves?

Hard to say, I had my first sports news exposure as a teenager in the 80´s.
The ones that were exciting then still have places of reverence somewhere in my consciousness. Florida State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Boston College, the dogged and determined ones who get special players…plus the big programs I guess…Oklahoma, Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa, the areas with people who live football and have fan cathedrals, the stadiums, seas of whatever color is impressive. I like underdogs too, Hawaii, Baylor, Temple, Syracuse hasn´t done anything in a long time.

WVU has fans that live (and love) college football. We don’t have much else to root for….Marshall doesn’t really count.

penn state won 2 national championships in the 80’s. don’t forget them.

Which ones have strong German demographics? Maybe that would help me decide.

penn state is located in central PA, in the heart of amish country; many of the original amish were german immigrants, so today’s amish are of german descent; sound okay?

I live 15 minutes from Penn State, and was going to school there for about a year. It was originally founded as an agricultural school.

i live 25 minutes from there, graduated from there. where do you live?

Bellefonte. I dropped out though. Let’s just say it’s not for me.

Where are you?

Down in Mifflin County – Reedsville. I work with a guy from Bellefonte.

maybe we need to start a State College Browns Backers Chapter.

Never but down that way. But that would be awesome. I was looking in the area for one, but this place is full of Pittspuke fans. It makes my day to see somebody wearing a Browns shirt.

Unfortunately, I’m 19. Kinda tough when I can’t go to a bar. I need to move to Canada.

we should consider it closer to the start of the season. maybe i’ll post something once training camp starts.

Sounds good. Since there’s nothing I know of near Central PA, I could see it generating a lot of interest.

I need to move to Canada.

yep. great place to be. I am 19 too and go school in buffalo so its pretty awesome.

Sounds good, I´d have to warm to it.
Philadelphia? Temple? Germans, do you know?

I recommend Wisconsin if you’re actively looking:

how are their rear ends?

I hope fine, I´m not into that.

Don’t be coy.

not sure about rear ends, but we got some bling in WV

Fourth picture… why did Graham Harrell try out again?

He got released by a Canadian Football League team…

Wow. So why would he try out for a team that didn’t take him last year? He should go to Oakland haha.

Funny picture though!

this was snapped right after colt was told what the weather is like in cleveland in the winter.

harrell just always looks like that.

I was thinking, if this picture was cut off at their numbers… it would be very suggestive.

And make for an fun create-a-caption.

Hahaha, you’re so right.

This could be photoshopped to something dirty.

I feel so bad for Harrell. He came back again?

TT ruins QB careers. Like destroys them.

If someone who played at TT was a good enough player to play in the NFL, they’d be fine. What TT does is raise expectations for decent college QBs.

Yup. It’s not like any highly regarded QB’s went to Texas Tech then faultered while there. Or a former Texas Tech QB was drafted high in the NFL draft then busted. I think the NFL knows not to judge any Tech QB based solely on their numbers.

Hal Mumme -style system. Creates outliers. I think the one thing that is really different is the way they run pass protection. Other than that they just run a lot of sound pass concepts.

Yeah, that sucks for him.

Hmmmmm.

Apparently, Cleveland saw enough of Graham Harrell last year to want to take a second look at him.

Think he can beat out Ratliff?

i don’t think it matters, i really don’t think we’ll carry 4 QBs

No, Mangenius has already hinted that he has considered keeping 4 QBs to hold onto Brett.

Did he mention Ratliff by name?

I think we have four QBs on the roster come week 1, but I don’t think that it’s a 100% certainty that one of those QBs is Ratliff.

No, he mentioned Ratliff. That’s where the 4 QB talk came from.

He has a Manginirection over Ratliff.

smokescreeen

It could be graham Harrell…or that could be a smokescreen in of itself.

If Harrell was any good, he would have earned a contract for training camp last year.

I agree. however, it isn’t out of the question with our QB situation.

This PIC is gonna make Jordan Shipley Jealous
I couldn't resist

Knowing he’s a Bengal makes this even funnier.

Wait, here's another

its amazing how widespread these are….although I just cranked the previous one out myself.

LINK COLTBACK MOUNTAIN

Lane Kiffin should be the other face.

Oh, God. haha.

Looks like he had a stiff neck to work out.

Story of Graham Harrell:

browns tryout player. Doesn’t make the team. Worked out for a UFL team. Didn’t make that team. Signed a 2 year contract in 2009 with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Is hired as the Ok. St. QB coach. Then it is announced he will only coach in the offseason and will play in the CFL too. then a couple months later he is released by his CFL team. then, his career comes full circle when he tries out for the browns in 2010.

The next Kurt Warner!

There is a difference. Kurt Warner was good….. Harrell, eh not so much.

I was kidding. Just reading that reminded me of the Warner story… a great QB coming out of the middle of nowhere. I’m not suggesting Harrell would be.

possibly…except that Kurt Warner got passed over b/c

a) he was from FCS D-1AA school Northern Iowa

b) He only had one year of starting experience

he is a guy who was extremely raw but had the physical skills and potential. Harrell really isn’t a high ceiling guy.

i’m beginning to think that if i practiced for a year i could throw for 50 TDs a texas tech

Harrell knew

he still had a shot in Cleveland. He asked for and received his release

Saskatchewan Roughriders release Graham Harrell and Eric Morris

Harrell knew he still had a shot in Cleveland

how do you know this from the article? it says his GOAL was to play in the NFL. There is also a difference between a player thinking he has a shot and a team thinking he has a shot.

Why spending 2009 not playing football increase his chances at making the team? Harrell played in their rookie camp but most don’t make the team. Look at the article posted. the browns have 53 guys in rookie camp and 35 tryout players. I would be surprised if much mre than 15 guys from rookie camp make the browns 53 man roster. it can happen. However, the chances for one guy out of the 35 that are tryout players to make the team is extremely slim. Being in rookie cam is no indication of any sort of chance to make the team.

and Mangini, the guy who liked Harrell enough to invite him to camp before, does not have the personnel control that he did last year.

I would say that Harrell’s chances of making the browns are at least 100 to 1 IMO.

Sounds like the Browns are still very interested in Harrell:

“We just wanted to see where he was and give him another opportunity,” Mangini said. “We liked the things that he did last year and have kept tabs on him over the course of the year. This is a good opportunity for us to gauge where he is.”

Link.

I wonder if they’re thinking of cutting Ratliff in favor of Harrell?

They’re looking to improve at every position. If they think Harrell has more to offer than Ratliff, they’ll keep Harrell.

Cut from the UFL, sounds like a winner

He was never on a team. He had a tryout but wasn’t good enough to make the team…then he was a 4th stringer on a CFL team.

Surprise! It’s papa walrus!

Harrell: “STRETCH HARDER! MAYBE THE MAGICAL WALRUS WILL SNEAK UP ON ME!”

Holmgren: “duck…duck…duck..duck…GOOSE!”

I know this isn’t a Cavs blog, but honestly I don’t like going over to FTS because it seems like there aren’t many people there. But I’m curious as to what everyone thinks of LeBron’s “No matter what happens, I’ll still have a home in Cleveland” comment. Is it a sign he’s leaving or is he just drawing attention to himself? I hope it’s the latter.

Oh and Mo needs to dunk to give us a spark haha.

I think he honestly hasn’t made up his mind, so he doesn’t want to say anything too committal one way or another.

Well, what a piss poor performance this has been. Hopefully they react to it like they did after game 2 vs. the Bulls.

And then they take it to 10 and give everyone false hope. If we don’t win in Boston, we’re screwed. But I think we’ll be ok.

my day was already a terrible day. It is so terrible to the point that I made a list of over 40 thinks that have pissed me off or upset me today.

I thing you mean 40 things

41!

no…Its up to 43. It was over 40 things…the cavs pushed it over. that didn’t piss me off honestly…but the fact that my meal options for dinner today were between a hot pocket and frito’s, that pissed me off.

Quit bitching. Fritos rule.

they are good, but I would rather have maybe something more substantial for a meal (didn’t have anything substantial for lunch either.

brown some hamburger and mix in some taco seasoning, then in a baking dish line the bottom with frito’s, then a layer of the burger, and repeat for a couple layers. Then get some Colby cheese to melt over the top of it all in the oven for about 7min or so til the cheese is melted. We call it Taco Pie, quick, easy, and is absolutely great!

I don’t have the luxury of meat really…or going out and buying food. I am broke and on a meal plan.

What’s the meal plan like at Buffalo?

good…except for finals week…then every eatery shuts down.

I am not a fan of meal plans…they have set times, set places you can eat (though this has significantly changed) and there is no rollover…

i don’t know about your set times and places, but where i go to school you can go whenever the place is open, which i think is like 8am to 9pm for the main dining halls and as late as 3am for a couple places, and there are at least 4 places on campus that i can think of off the top of my head that take meal swipes

yeah. Most places take meal swipes on campus but the meals are at set times…you can’t use lunch after 2:30, Breakfast after 10:30, or dinner after 8.

and finals week, everything closes down. like 2 places take meal swipes, only one for dinner, and that place (for dinner) is only open from 5-7.

It is usually not terrible, just my meal plan stinks and finals week sucks (my meal plan gives me every meal they offer…no rollover…and I waste like 7 a week…mostly breakfast)

Please I eat at dining facilities ran by KBR. Have you ever seen or ate Mexican food made by a person from India?

this made me laugh out loud for some reason

I have seen mexican food made by african-americans, indians making friend chicken and cole slaw, americans making chinese, hispanics making indian food…

yeah, the student union dining areas just played musical chairs with the ethnicities.

Hispanics make cheeseburgers and fries.

friend chicken

this sounds very warm and fuzzy. the friendliest chicken around.

In Columbus we have a very small Italian restaurant run by people from India and they have some of the best Italian food I’ve ever had.

Udipi Cafe is run by what appear to be Indian people and it is delicious.

Where is the Italian restaurant?

It’s called Verdi Restaurant and it’s on 315 just north of I-270, when 315 goes down to 2 lanes. It’s on the right in a plaza with a few other shops and eating places. It’s very small — there are only 3 booths and 6 tables in whole place. But fantastic food.

Sorry, but Fritos disgust me. Just my opinion though.

Agreed. Doritos in a taco salad on the other hand. Hell to the yes.

FLAG

this…fritos are outstanding

ADDITIONAL FLAG

I’ll flagh if he’s talking about the barbeque twist kind.

Holy shit I love the bbq Twist kind!

I drunkenly ate a whole bag of those like an hour ago.

don’t diss hot pockets.

DIARRHEA POCKET. or…

CALIENTE… POCKET.

this definitely went through my mind at least once last night.

You have no clue where I got this from do you?

Oh, wow.

I got the joke right away…

You don’t see what I did

no, i did. I meant that he would be mad that he did that.

Any chance we flip Reinders or other OLs over to DT/DE? We’ve got some hefty OLs (I was thinking of Jason Capizzi as well) on the roster now. It seems a long shot, but I couldn’t help wondering.

Reinders has only played OL in 8 games his entire career. The man can’t suddenly do a position swap.

Well, it’s not like he’s exactly settled in at OL. At this point there might not be that much of a difference in the learning curve for him either way. As to whether he possesses the talent/skills/whatever to work the other side of the line is a different question.

Well put. I don’t know much about the difference in requirements for OL versus DL. The big attraction to Reinders was his athleticism, which would seem to be attractive on both sides. He’s a project, in any event. Anybody want to offer some opinions on the differences between OL talent and DL talent?

Hey, moon! I like your new name!

NM stands for New Mooncamping

If he makes the team I’ll run naked around town.

Sharks up 3-0.

AHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

Pavelski.... The lesser of my two favorite Joe's.

Man, I have no idea why his heart just exploded.

Is it just me or does Heckert look like he’s been cuffed?

he looks like he’s the lookout while mangini and ryan make a drug deal.

the only deal those two would be making is who is buying lunch

mangini: I got the double down you got the money?
ryan: yeah, yeah, just give it to me!

rec. the double down would be like drugs to rob ryan.

The Double Down would be like drugs to ANY food loving American… if it weren’t so damned expensive!

yeah. I thought it would only be like 2-3 dollars at most. I looked it up…Its like over 5 dollars!

but it fills you up. you don’t need to buy anything else.

thats true…

And its not as terrible as one would think. Its not great for you, but when you consider Cheese, Bacon, Mayo and Fried Chicken, it is surprisingly low in fat.

still better for you than a Big Mac

Not really. Basically the same, except the Double Down has a hell of a lot more salt.

thats true…the salt…

I was thinking calories and fat, and it was a bit better if I remember. I could be wrong…but it definitely has more sodium content.

I fuckin love double downs!

lol…I saw you just admitted to eating cheetos drunk recently…would you still happen to be in this state?

you should make that your signature

Just a reminder . . . please stay away from the cuss words on this blog. You can say the same thing without using the f-word.

:( sorry, wasn’t thinking.

IT AIN'T EASY BEIN' CHEESY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCl5uyn5K7k

I just learned 2 things about him.

1. He was a football player (I am surprised I never knew this)

2. He got an art scholarship to school.

And he’s 41. That shape, age 41.

He’s also the new crazy dude old spice guy.

Those commercials are killing me.

Building kick!

BUH BUH BUH BUH BUH BUH POWER!!!!

I know…he is freakin’ ripped…and he is hilarious.

he killed me in “White Girls” with the Wayan Bros

hhhmmmm…I personally do not want this to happen.

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/colleges/topstories/stories/050510dnspocollutmccoy.168ea5d5.html

If we are 3-10 (something that I think is well in our reach) and McCoy has shown in practice that he has a good grasp on the offense, then why not?

Let him get some idea of the speed of the game.

Seemed to me more like, “I don’t expect Delhomme and Wallace to both be injured/benched, but sure it could happen.”

Maybe he means, he hopes we are not 3-10 and in a position where the season is already a wash and we just playing him to play him.

Or, as Danvail mentions, he’s hoping we are not injury ridden at the QB position, and forced to play McCoy.

I can agree with both of those. And I’d see less than 5 wins without signs of progress as a failure.

Lastly, I hope, personally, that if Delhomme is throwing as bad as he did last year, that their isn’t another controversy about who’s going to start the remaining games, blah blah blah, and hearing “COLT COLT COLT!” every time the starter throws a pick.

If Delhomme is horrible, I will be all for Seneca.

I’ve got no problem with playing Seneca if Delhomme is garbage.

What I won’t like is another dumb “QB controversy” where we end up juggling starting QBs among the 3-4 we have.

I have no problem with him coming in for a few series later in the year. I just prefer for him to sit this year and sponge up information from Delhomme and the coach’s.

How am I going to make it through the offseason?

I wish i could hibernate.

More conversations about steroid use and baseball’s competitive topology?

Nah, me neither.

Basketball playoffs fill a some of that void, but come July….. sad times. Worst part of the year.

July will be a sad time if a certain someone is gone :-/

Sebastian Telfair?

Playoffs were sad Monday. Cavs didn’t even look like they were trying. They better start taking Boston seriously.

Cavs didn’t even look like they were trying. They better start taking Boston seriously.

done and done.

If Boston wins next game, Cavies are done.

not really. the series would be 2-2 and the cavs would still have one more game at home…

now, if CLEVELAND wins the next game, the Cs are done.

unless, you were talking about the current game where they won, and I would still see them having a chance.

Cavs should have whooped the aging Celtics. They can’t play at the level they’ve been playing and expect to win the series against more experienced playoff players..
This is from someone who doesn’t like either team.

the Celtics are not a terrible team. in the season series, the cavs only split. the Cavs are up 2-1. I don’t see a problem.

They aren’t terrible but they’re far from the best.

The regular season record mattering, along with experience mattering (which you have recently mentioned) are two things Hollinger just listed in his “playoff myths” article. Hollinger is pretty smart for an ESPN writer, so I am going to trust him over you.

yeah. I agree hollinger is smart. I do agree too that regular season record really doesn’t matter a ton.

Experience I read actually does matter. one of the biggest factors in determining teams that would win a playoff series is previous playoff experience… I cannot remember the exact article I read it on. It was on an E-Mail from my father that got deleted at some point.

I don’t know as much about basketball as I do about football.

But I get the opinion that Hollinger knows his stuff:

Myth 2: Experience matters. Young teams are at an extreme disadvantage when they wade into the playoffs against a battle-tested crew. Or so we’re told. Veteran teams do have an edge. But it has nothing to do with players’ ages.

We tend to get cause and effect backward. When the Bobcats lost to the Magic in this year’s first round, what mattered more — that they were making their first run as a group or that they were the No. 7 seed facing a 59-game winner? Teams with less playoff experience are usually not as talented as their opponents; that’s why they lose.

I agree with you about hollinger. I want to see if I can also find out the article about playoff experience.

what mattered more — that they were making their first run as a group or that they were the No. 7 seed facing a 59-game winner? Teams with less playoff experience are usually not as talented as their opponents; that’s why they lose.

at the same time, this is a generalization. what happens when lets say 2 teams with similar records face…like the spurs and mavs this year.

Talent definitely is the main thing. I think from what I remember, the article actually said it was talking about matchups between similar teams talentwise.

It is a generalization just like you provided above in saying that experience matters.

You are now arguing against Hollinger using points which go against every point you have made up to now. This is the sort of BS thing that makes people on this blog very angry.

I definitely agree though with a lot of what hollinger says though and I will say he knows more than me…and he has a good point about better teams in general winning.

Case in point: Suns / Spurs this year. Spurs have the experience and the rings. Suns have been a first round exit team.

The cavs have plenty of playoff experience, between the deep runs last year and in 08, and the finals appearance in 07. This team has been there just as much as the celtics, but Haven’t actually won the big one, unlike the lakers and celts. Therefore the Cavs ought to have something more to play for.

No rings though. They need to step up and be the best team. They’re playing ike crap now.

They’re playing ike crap now.

how much cavs basketball have you watched?

lets see, they had 4 great games and one close loss against Miami.

then against the Cs, they won game one handily, then had a terrible game…but then bounced back to deliver the Cs their WORST PLAYOFF LOSS IN THEIR HISTORY…

Hey, I’m routing for the Cavs. Mark Price was my favorite player when I was a kid. I want to see a Clev-LA Final and Clev winning it all to shut these LA buttholes up.

thats nice to here. Maybe you have been looking at it a little pessimistically, and as someone who roots for a cleveland team, I do not blame you. Realistically, the cavs have not played bad though. Yeah, I hope we whoop LA too.

I’m not a Cavs fan. They’re the best team and they need that ring. The Warriors aren’t in the mix and I hate LA, so I have to rout for someone, right?

Today’s game could’ve gone to anyone. That 12-0 run in the 4th screwed them over.

I think we win in 7.

I thought the officiating throughout most of the game was bad. Very bad.

I don’t like to blame the refs, but there were definitely some BS calls.

I thought it was poor for both sides. I was screaming at my TV about some of the anti-Cavs calls, but then I would find myself saying “yeah, that was terrible” about some pro-Cavs calls.

I found the game unwatchable from a quality of play and reffing point of view.

that was one of the most poorly officiated games i’ve seen in the playoffs, and you are 100% right that it was bad for both teams. It wasn’t even bad in the sense that they missed calls or called to much, it was bad in the sense that they weren’t consistent. sometimes they were letting a lot of the physical stuff go and sometimes they were calling silly little touch fouls.

Bingo.

This is what makes NBA so crazy.

If you are going to call touch fouls from the opening whistle, call them all damn game.

I am glad I am not the only one who feels like the NBA is often officiated like the WWE.

In fairness, it has to be impossible to ref Lebron James. The guy is so strong that the other team almost has to foul to stop him from getting to the rim, but who really wants to see a foul called every single play?

But you can’t just ignore the rules because a guy is a freak.

I don’t mind if they want to let them play, just let them play the whole game through. NBA officials seem to ebb and flow with foul calls.

It drives me nuts that officials think that they need to “control” a game by whistling fouls.

This is exactly the problem with basketball. The officials have too many decisions and too much influence. I think the game is basically flawed at its core. The problem is that the NFL is trending a bit too far into the same territory in terms of rules constraining the defense. Lets just hope it doesn’t go any further than it already has. Football has to remain football.

I wasn’t saying ignore the rules, I was saying it is difficult to ref Lebron. If I had it my way I would change some of the NBA rules outright.

I’m not a Lebron fan, but I think it’s ridiculous sometimes how teams can get away with trying to guard him, this goes with shaq when he was a strong threat as well.

In my opinion, if there’s a foul you have to call it. If not then you’re giving the opposing team an unfair advantage and you take away a part of the game that should be available to a guy like Lebron, getting to the free throw line and putting the opposing team into foul trouble.

Honestly I don’t it will slow down the average time of game because the guys fouling will be out of the game quickly. It’s not fair to make a strength of Lebron into a weakness for fear of slowing down a game, especially in the playoffs.

Hell, if anyone in Cleveland is complaining about the month of July, just reminisce back to last February and enjoy the weather.

I don’t actually live in Cleveland, what happened last February that you’re referring to?

pretty sure he means something like this

I heard this quote from mangini before. I think all he is saying is it is a possibility but he is no at all a frontrunner.

If Colt looks like he can handle the job in practice, why not send him out there for the last 2 or 3 games. Eli Manning started the last few contests of his rookie year. As long as Colt sits at least 8 games and holmgren actually says he is ready. The key is to not just play him to sate the idiotic fans.

We need to sign JaMarcus Russel pronto. He can mentor Colt McCoy.

/sarc? if so haha, if not I just don’t have a response.

Russell can show him what not to do?

lead by bad example

JaMarcus Russell, big guy, big presence.
Accrued awards in college:
Awards and honors
Columbus Touchdown Club SEC Player of the Year (2005)
4x SEC Offensive Player of the Week (1 in 2005, 3 in 2006)
First-team All-SEC by the Associated Press and SEC coaches (2006)
Manning Award (2006)
Davey O’Brien Award semifinalist (2006)
Redshirted 2003 National Championship season at LSU
And in a pinch he just might be the better offensive tackle in a pinch, joking.

those are all good and well moon, but I don’t want a guy who lets himself go and is reportedly lazy and lethargic during practice anywhere around my rookies.

Alright, makes sense.
He may be the type of guy that would reward you with spectacular performance for the merit of a second chance. Since we should be dedicated to Colt McCoy, that may indeed, not be a good idea. I just thought he could hang out, after all he comes from winning programs.

it will be interesting to see where he ends up

Yeah, if they even let him extend his career. He lost a lot, makes most people question his talent.

Do as I say, not as I do?

and people say our trophy case is empty

Where are those Steeler and Raven trolls now!?

Championship!

Hey notthatnoise

To the Western Conference Finals.

I think i’ve come a full 180 on this. now i’d almost like to see them win the whole thing, just to avenge the playoff meltdowns of previous seasons.

also props to the people who threw a shark on the ice.

Someone really thought outside the box on that one.

Lol Thanks for routing for us. I’m a little worried about the Blackhawks though. They owned us this season. If we lost, I wouldn’t see it as a complete meltdown.

I seriously would have rather seen chum thrown out there than a shark. It’s our mascot! It seemed in poor taste to me. It would be like if a Browns fan threw out a dead dog on the field, sort of. Just doesn’t seem right.

Octopus chum?

but they threw the shark with an octopus in its mouth.
