Browns Sign Six Tryout Players, Roth Requests Trade

The Cleveland Browns signed six of their tryout players to contracts today. The six players are listed below:

  • TE Ryan Moya (UCLA) - 6-1, 230 pounds
  • DL Kwaku Danso (East Carolina) - 6-5, 336 pounds
  • DL Brian Sanford (Temple) - 6-2, 280 pounds
  • DL Martin Tavaseu (Nevada-Las Vegas) - 6-1, 310 pounds
  • DB Matthew Harris (Arkansas) - 6-2, 193 pounds
  • K Leigh Tiffin (Alabama) - 6-0, 209 pounds

Tiffin seems interesting, since he connected on 30 of his 35 field goals last season.

As some of you started discussing earlier, LB Matt Roth has asked for a trade if he doesn't receive a new contract. Is this an effect of so many players taking the front office's handling of the Joshua Cribbs situation as a gesture that they will be handing out new deals left and right?

This seems like a rehash of what's been said on D'Qwell Jackson and Abram Elam already, but some of these guys need to start facing reality. They are playing on a team that has not had a winning culture for awhile, and none of them were even close to being above average players last year. Jackson missed most of the season and you could argue that the linebacker unit got better without him. Elam was healthy throughout the season, but the Browns' secondary was still vulnerable. Roth is probably the highest on my list of our defensive RFA's because he was a monster when the Browns signed him late in the season, but that's all he had -- a few games in a down season.

All of this talk is probably pointless anyway. It would almost be a shock if all of our RFA's did not sign before June 15. Sure, they will have missed out on OTA's, but they aren't going to forfeit the money that is already on the table considering few teams are probably ringing our bell about them anyway.

Awe, Graham Harrell got sent home again.

Boo.

Moya is very tiny, plus he only had like 150 yds his senior year

he might have been signed to get reps at fullback

I’m a fan of Leigh Tiffin and anyone named Kwaku.

Kahlua?

mmmm…Kahlua…tastes like liquid candy.

Never drank it so wouldn’t know.

Any alcoholic beverage that combines well with coffee cannot be underestimated.

Depending on your tastes, that could be a rather large field of candidates. Eliminate ouzo (it’s not bad, but has no business getting near my coffee) and the list is still pretty extensive.

Right you are. The world is my wet bar!

it basically tastes like a mocha frap with a shot of vodka…at least to me. it is a cofee liquor but is very chocolatey too.

Never tasted any of that so still wouldn’t know.

You’ve never had a mocha frap?

Nope. Coffee’s disgusting.

you probably wouldn’t like it then…although to me it is more chocolatey than coffee-like

Yeah, still not the slightest bit interested.

thats perfectly fine. to each, his own.

You’re 19?

I don’t think SB drinks alcohol, at all

Yes but the point remains I don’t drink regardless.

I do give you props for that my man. Not many can go through college w/out atleast getting wasted one night.

I commute which makes the process even easier.

The dude does not abide.

be careful man, there’s a beverage here.

I think it’s players realizing that they are on a less than stellar team that quite possibly might be lining itself up for a bright future. I think they are hoping that they can get a good contract due to the lower talent level on the team. I think Delhomme’s contract is more to blame than Cribbs.

Delhomme’s contract is not a whole lot for a starting QB.

I’m referring to the fact that we gave him a deal and a starting position after his recent performances. I think some of the guys are looking to get good contracts based off of their perceptions of Delhomme’s deal. While some might see it as a hope that a once competent QB can return to some measure of his past, I think the players see it as a signing of a less than stellar replacement player, which in my opinion is how the team probably views alot of those guys.

I just don’t think they’re sitting at home realistically comparing themselves and what they did last year to what Cribbs did.

Also, on some level I think these guys have an idea that they could be replaceable and are looking to test the FO and see just how replaceable they are. I guess we’ll all find out soon enough.

Look at the money Derek Anderson signed for the Cardinals with to come in and be a backup.

I think these guys’ desire for a long-term deal has less to do with the “we’ve earned it” and more to do with “I should have already hit free agency and received a $5million signing bonus”

Delhomme took a pay cut to stop playing with the Panthers and start playing with us.

Plus, they can. It doesn’t cost them anything to ask and none of them are likely to get cut before the 15 June deadline, so why not? It doesn’t hurt to ask.

And they can have an excuse to sit out OTAs as well.

I know that skip had two good D Lineman down at ECU but I haven’t heard anything about this one.

He is 336 lbs. and an undrafted rookie.

Not trying to sound rude, but so?

That’s what I’ve heard about him. Huge, undrafted, rookie.

he is also a 28 year old undrafted rookie.

I really don’t like the stance some people seem to be taking with these RFAs. “Who needs ’em?” Well considering they are some of our best LBs, I’d say the Browns need them.

The general attitude is more: they have no leverage whatsoever so just wait until June 15 and they’ll have to sign their tenders. The worst that can happen is they sit out the year in which case they’re right back to where they started. They can either sign a tender or retire. Not much of a choice.

Wait, don’t they get to hit FA if they sit out the year?

I’m pretty sure it’s like the year never happened and the contract is unaffected right?

Unpaid and a year isn’t taken off their contract.

If they don’t play by November 1, then there years accumulated is void and it’s as if the year never happened.

*their

So these guys have absolutely no leverage.

Just because they might be our best linebackers, does that mean we should overpay them when they have no leverage?

I think Tiffin has a real shot at being this teams kicker.

He certainly looked good in college. Great accuracy

Oh, swing and a miss buddy.

You suck at predictions.

I believe this will be Dawson’s second hold-out.

Add in that he missed 5 games last season with that, and I have no issue with bringing in a new kicker.

Not what I meant.

I think Tiffin has a real shot at being this teams kicker.

He just got cut.

they signed him only to immediately cut him? why?

Because the Browns have signed Shaun Suisham.

Suisham is terrible though

I would prefer a youngster, like Tiffin, myself.

I am willing to trust the coach’s judgment with kickers.

terrible? he isn’t particularly great but I would say he is at least decent. why is he so terrible (though I do prefer tiffin)

we shoulda signed Nooge.

seriously???

what has Nugent EVER done. Look at the kicking stats. Suisham has been a better kicker throughout his career. Noodge had one solid season (his second) then fell off the map.

I bet you, if Nugent wasn’t an OSU guy, you wouldn’t be saying this…Neither one is that superior over the other, though suisham has a bit better stats in every kicking category. The only thing Noodge is good at doing is the easy kicks. after 40 yards, he is pretty bad and after 50 yards, just close your eyes and pray. He is phil dawson without the accuracy.

Not true.

He was a great singer/songwriter
He has a great show on the outdoor channel
He is very entertaining to watch as well

THAT nugent? yeah, he is awesome. It is hard to have a bad thing to say about him…

i dunno, he’s a pretty racist, sexist bigot. he also threatened to shoot the president over health care.

thats true…

I doubt he was being serious about the healthcare thing, but still…

really? about the president? suprised the secret service didn’t take him out. that is not something to joke about when your as big a celebrity as he is. (not to mention knows how to hunt)

I was wrong, it wasn’t about health care. it was before the election. he told obama to “suck on [his] machine gun,” while holding an actual machine gun on stage.

http://www.prefixmag.com/news/ted-nugent-threatens-hilary-clinton-barack-obama/11416/

I thought he was a little “off”, but that just proves my point. You can’t say stuff like that.

Eh, I wouldn’t lose sleep over it. I think I have seen some outrageous political commentary of this sort at almost every concert I have ever attended. I am seeing Pearl Jam tomorrow and I expect something of this sort from Vedder.

I seriously doubt Vedder threatens violence against anyone though.

From wiki:
“The band made news when it was reported that several fans left after Vedder had “impaled” the Bush mask on his mic stand at the band’s Denver, Colorado show."

While not a direct threat, I think Pearl Jam and many other bands have probably done similar things.

the message there is “I would like to see george bush dead.” not “I am going to use this machine gun that I am holding right now to murder the president myself.” there is a big difference between wishingharm on someone and threatening harm on someone.

It’s the same thing. Trying to get a reaction out of a crowd. Neither is a big deal.

I’m not saying its a big deal, just trying to show it isn’t particularly hard to find a bad thing to say about him, as was originally posited.

I understand what you mean. I wasn’t implying that he doesn’t have his faults, which he definitely does. I was more just saying it in a joking manner that he is a cool dude who plays good music.

Let us know how the PJ show is.

Will do, pretty pumped for it.

There are people at my school who think this guy’s awesome.

Welcome to South Carolina!

Nugent is very funny and has some really good songs.

I had a roommate freshman year who LOVED ted nugent.

He was really conservative, he used the N word all the time (after checking to make sure no dark people were around, of course), and he was really in to “being a man” and “hot chicks”. He was bigoted in every way imaginable.

But he had never lifted weights in his life, he hated football and almost all sports, I am pretty sure he got his nails done routinely, he giggled like a schoolgirl, and he wouldn’t drink beer so he drank wine coolers (because of course, being a man means getting drunk). He also refused to stand up and fight me “like a man” after he called me a jap.

That’s my Ted Nugent fan experience.

That’s a pretty good summary of most all Nugent fans.

Oh, you’re of Asian decent?

He seems pretty decent to me. Not sure what that has to do with being Asian though?

he was probably referencing how rufio’s roommate called him a “jap”

bross, just don’t respond to golanbatrac anymore. His subtle jokes are killing you.

I get it now that I gave it a second look. I thought golan was questioning whether rufio was asian and why it was relevant…I think I misunderstood what he said completely (whether serious or a joke)

The word decent is not descent. Go back and look at the series of posts now, starting with SB’s.

Don’t clue him in, I like watching golan dangle the thread over his head.

That’s cruel, RD. And, I agree, sometimes quite entertaining.

gahnki…no need to be a dick.

I get it now that I gave it a second look

did this clue you in as to my understanding of the joke? well if not, I guess I have to say again, I read it again and I understood it.

The word decent is not descent

this is either

a) irrelevant

b) you being a condescending dick.

Dude he was explaining it to you.

Relax. No need to fly off the handle at the one person who was helping you.

Seriously.

well…I already told him I understood it and the way he said it, it sounded kinda condescending..

Ahh… as the World of DBN turns.

i think the most hilarious thing about all of this is that you claimed at one point that you were attempting to become an improv comedian, yet you are often the very last person, literally, to get the jokes on here.

that, my friend, is comedy gold.

As a comedian, they want you to do other things besides comedy. Write us a script. Act in this sitcom." They want me to do shit that’s related to comedy, but it’s not comedy, man. It’s as though if I was a cook, and I worked my ass off to become a really good cook, and they said "alright you’re a cook… can you farm?

getting a joke on the internet and performing and learning improvisational comedy are pretty unrelated and do not take similar skills.

I get jokes face to face, I just understand a lot and learn a lot from people by their facial expressions and tone, which plays a big factor into improv…

and people also misconstrue improv as “whose line” where they are just constantly making jokes. that is one type, short form, because the scenes are short. I personally like long form which lets you develop a story, characters, and more emotions. it relies less on the (albeit fun) “cheap gags” and more on developing characters on the spot and truly creating scenes out of nothing.

So what you’re saying is throughout this thread you’ve been developing a story?

good one…

but not really.

I am not as honed as some other people I know. I am not always in improv mode and am rarely in that mode when posting on here.

I was not trying to be a “dick” at all. I was trying to explain it to you because I inferred that you still did not understand after this statement:

I think I misunderstood what he said completely (whether serious or a joke)

The joke had nothing to do with his manner of saying it, it was just a word play.

yeah…sorry…it felt like the way you said it was condescending. maybe I saw stuff that wasn’t there.

Sounds like a good one. I feel for you and your freshman year.

Two Words: Damn Yankees.

Have you ever watched him?

he isn’t bad. He has some consistency issues but he is not a “terrible” kicker. I would consider him maybe a bit below league average.

I know this isn’t Browns related, but has anybody here looked at the WVU blog on here (Smoking Musket)? I am very disappointed. Nobody really posts on it and just about every front page image is just beer and scantily clothed women. Doesn’t say much for our fans.

just about every front page image is just beer and scantily clothed women

do you realize what you just complained about?

Sorry momentarily lapse of judgment there

Bet you’re going to the beer free zone in the stadium next year!

There are many times in morgantown that I don’t even make into the game. Man, I love tailgating

I would love to go to a WVU-Louisville game, my only fear is that I wouldn’t make it out alive

You would be good coming into Motown, we don’t mess with Louisville fans too much. (If that’s what your referring to) Its the PITT fans we hate

You would also be good coming to Motown if you are meaning that you may not have any memory of what transpired while you were there. The flashes in between are always fun that you can remember. Good stories to tell anyways.

it took me a minute to sort out which “Motown” you were talking about. I’m feeling slow today.

didn’t really think about people out of the area…pretty much what everyone calls it here in WV
