With the 92nd pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns selected OG Shawn Lauvao from Arizona State. With the departures of offensive guards Rex Hadnot and Hank Fraley in the offseason, adding to the depth of our tremendous offensive line sounds fine.
It's impossible to project whether Lauvao is starting material one day, but many teams end up finding some solid linemen in the middle rounds. If Lauvao ends up panning out at right guard in the future, maybe we go after a right tackle in next year's draft.

Why wait till next year? If Bruce Cambell falls to the fifth round, I say we take him!
BrownDawg1409 - April 23, 2010
Good pick but Campbell would have been better
TheRealSlimShady - April 23, 2010
Have you watched any tape on Campbell. He was a combine monster but not a very good football player. I like this pick. RSS aren’t you a Carolina Panter’s fan now?
BrownsFanRegina - April 23, 2010
Read my comment before you wanna be an A-hole. I said this was a good pick.
TheRealSlimShady - April 23, 2010
Are you saying this because all of the mock drafts on the internet said so? I am curious why 32 NFL teams have let him slip so far, perhaps they know something we don’t.
Roger Dorn - April 23, 2010
Bingo.
Simmsinns - April 23, 2010

gentryholdem - April 24, 2010
Sorry, I forgot I wasn’t allowed to share an opinion.
TheRealSlimShady - April 23, 2010
You are allowed to have your own opinion. I was just wondering what during his three years at Maryland what made you think Bruce Campbell was any good? Or was it his performance at the combine? Also I was serious, aren’t you going to become a Carolina Panther’s fan now?
BrownsFanRegina - April 23, 2010
I don’t know much about him, but I assume people think he’s good because he was projected to go in the top 10 in some mocks.
Brownie's Year - April 23, 2010
I think that was based on his performance at the combine rather than his play during actual football games. I am happy with our pick in this spot.
BrownsFanRegina - April 23, 2010
this
bross09 - April 24, 2010
Maybe he only becomes fans of the teams AFTER (or if they were winning already) they start winning with the ND players, you know, ever since the Quinn fallout.
Simmsinns - April 23, 2010
He was good in the regular season and he has a very high ceiling. I know his injuries drop him, but people seem to be blasting him for doing well at the combine, which makes no sense.
TheRealSlimShady - April 24, 2010
If he had such a good regular season than why did “Most if not all teams have applied a round-four grade to the former Terp.”
BrownsFanRegina - April 24, 2010
Of course you are allowed your opinion. But yet again, the Browns Scouting staff locked onto an explosive athlete who can play multiple rolls. This kid can play on either the left or right guard spots and he can certainly fill in at Right tackle if we need him there. We solidified our line with this pick. And our line was already pretty strong beforehand. Now we have the potential to absolutely dominate for the next 5-7 years with Thomas, Mack, and Lauvao as our anchors.
gentryholdem - April 24, 2010
I wouldn’t call Lauvao an anchor. At least not yet.
TheRealSlimShady - April 24, 2010
this is what I want from my lineman. Play those Rolls!!
bross09 - April 24, 2010
Hey, at 6’3 315 he certainly looks the part of an NFL guard. Lets hope this kid can learn from our veteran offensive lineman and become a solid starter. Also, hes polynesian, so you know Mangini likes him.
jaws. - April 23, 2010
Thanks for posting the numbers, was curious. Looks like a solid enough build. Knowing our staff, I imagine he is better at run blocking than pass blocking.
Roger Dorn - April 23, 2010
Someone posted vid of him on the draft thread. He’s looks big, but not fat.
Brownie's Year - April 23, 2010
I’ve always thought of Luavao as being a better pass blocker.
TheRealSlimShady - April 24, 2010
I’ve heard the opposite from a couple places, but i certainly don’t know any better than anyone else.
notthatnoise - April 24, 2010
he is a solid pass blocker in technique but a better run blocker. he is just a pure mauler with a mean streak that can dominate. he isn’t very athletic which is why he is an interior guy, but also limits his effectiveness on pulls.
bross09 - April 24, 2010
The real question is: Does he have the Steinbach ass Mooncamping cherishes so much?
North Coast Flea - April 24, 2010
Mooncamping penciled in him as one of the guys he wanted.
skipkirk - April 24, 2010
… you know the Polynesians always make good stuff.
rolub - April 24, 2010
I think it is a good move bringin in a guy who can be a good STARTING gaurd over time. Lauvao was great at Arizona State
deibson84 - April 23, 2010
TRSS, just let me know what you want my sig to say for three months. I’ll start the bet as soon as you know what you want it to say.
gahnki - April 23, 2010
K, I will but I need to wright my fanpost for Brad first.
Anyone got any ideas for gahnki’s signature?
P.S. Thanks for being a good sport.
TheRealSlimShady - April 24, 2010
I’ve got a few suggetions:
“Hail to the Victors!”
“Why can’t I be a Ben Roethlisberger victim?”
“I’m in love with Polamalu’s hair!”
“Art Modell for Hall of Fame!”
“Clausen makes for a sexy Avatar!” (Regular ESPN Mag readers will get this one.)
“Brady Quinn is Beast”
Oh, and sorry gahnki.
Simmsinns - April 24, 2010
danvail - April 27, 2010
That should read “Number two all the way”.
danvail - April 27, 2010
How about “She said no Ben.”
BrownsFanRegina - April 24, 2010
How about:
“Man enough to pay up when he loses a bet.”
golanbatrac - April 24, 2010
this is my choice
notthatnoise - April 24, 2010
This.
SpecialBrownie - April 24, 2010
I replied earlier to this, but I dont know where it went, but I will pay back Brad before I make Gahnki do anything
TheRealSlimShady - April 27, 2010
What was the bet on?
skipkirk - April 24, 2010
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t big on this draft until the McCoy pick. Now I’m pumped.
gahnki - April 23, 2010
For me it relies heavily on how the safety turns out. I don’t know much about him, but I really wanted a safety in round 2.
Roger Dorn - April 23, 2010
Very physical. I’ve looked at the OSU Rose Bowl game 1,000 times (slight exaggeration) and he sticks out as a hitter. He will be the future Abe Elam.
gahnki - April 23, 2010
Future Abe Elam is a problem as we needed a FS not a SS
deibson84 - April 23, 2010
Elam is not even signed for next season. We need safeties, period.
Roger Dorn - April 23, 2010
Sheldon Brown can play free safety if need be. I like T.J. Ward a lot as a player; not sure about in the 2nd round, though.
gahnki - April 23, 2010
I hate Oregon’s defense.
rufio - April 24, 2010
The scheme, that is.
rufio - April 24, 2010
They gamble a lot. Loose man coverage seems to be the only thing they practice. But they do have a fantastic history of defensive backs recently.
gahnki - April 24, 2010
True about their DBs. I was speaking to the Open Plus front that I dislike. I just never thought they had the personnel to run it. Not recently, at least.
rufio - April 24, 2010
Durability… :(

TheRealSlimShady - April 27, 2010

golanbatrac - April 28, 2010
Hahahaha.
emily522 - April 29, 2010
A little off subject, but I’ve watched the game several times as well. (Probably about 4-5.) The entire thing was available for streaming on ESPN for a while. Such a great game.
Back on subject, I’ve very high hopes for our secondary. I also really really like Rob Ryan as our DC.
Simmsinns - April 23, 2010
I also really really like Rob Ryan as our DC especially with some potential talent.
danvail - April 27, 2010
Yes, Ryan with talent makes me smile. He has some great defensive schemes.
Kimble_79 - April 27, 2010
TJ can play SS, CB, or free safety. He’s smart and hard working. We can rotate him.
gentryholdem - April 24, 2010
Same. But after further research of our other picks, I like it.
emily522 - April 24, 2010
Also why draft a RT next year when we just added Tony Pashos at RT. This guy is very good
deibson84 - April 23, 2010
Depth is never a bad thing.
Simmsinns - April 23, 2010
Can never have enough offensive linemen.
gentryholdem - April 24, 2010
Pashos isn’t getting younger.
rufio - April 24, 2010
Is RT the only position Luavao can play?
woodsmeister - April 24, 2010
He projects as a guard. Not quite long limbed enough for tackle at this level.
golanbatrac - April 24, 2010
Yes, probably RG, potentially LG.
rufio - April 24, 2010
whats the difference in responsibilities between LG and RG? i really don’t know and I would rather have him replace a floyd womack than Steinbach.
bross09 - April 24, 2010
Usually, LG is more mobile while RG is more of an in-line run blocker.
Depends on scheme, depends on a lot of things. LGs are usually better than RGs. Similar to OTs but to a lesser extent.
rufio - April 24, 2010
yeah. thanks. that makes sense since Steinbach is fairly mobile for a guard. I can see Luavao being RG more anyways from what I have heard. he sounds like he is a nice run blocker and mauler who isn’t as mobile
bross09 - April 24, 2010
Very good? Try serviceable to solid.
TheRealSlimShady - April 24, 2010
I would love to know why Bruce Campbell has fallen. He was being looked at as a top ten pick a month ago.
gahnki - April 23, 2010
jimmy clausen was being looked at as a top ten pick yesterday. sometimes nfl teams are much smarter than TV personalities.
notthatnoise - April 23, 2010
Yep, but I’m really wondering what’s up with Campbell. You would think an athletic freak would at least notch a project pick in the third round.
gahnki - April 23, 2010
Sometimes there are drug tests or something else that could cause a player to fall that just aren’t circulated to the public right away.
Roger Dorn - April 23, 2010
Or a health issue. Something might have turned up with his knees which would be a common rejection at this stage.
gentryholdem - April 24, 2010
I asked this in the live game thread. Rufio mentioned that while he has awesome raw athletic ability, he lacks the actual skill to play the position well.
Simmsinns - April 23, 2010
There is something to be said for “raw athletic freak” vs “football player.”
gentryholdem - April 24, 2010
taylor mays…
ricky sapp…
jacoby ford…
there is a reason these guys drop…and there is a reason the raiders always take them (to stop the drop)…they took both campbell and ford…not a surprise.
bross09 - April 24, 2010
I’m not saying he is terrible in terms of technique, etc., just that the way he played didn’t match up with his freak athleticism.
rufio - April 24, 2010
That’s what I meant to express in the comment. Sorry if I misquoted you.
Simmsinns - April 24, 2010
Nah, you didn’t. Just clarifying.
rufio - April 24, 2010
They showed him live before the draft started and he was wearing an “A shirt”.
Dude is freaking stacked.
Bernie19Kosar - April 24, 2010
Maybe the guy is an idiot.
Sometimes it is that simple.
Bernie19Kosar - April 24, 2010
In which case, we end up with the best o-line in the NFL. I really like the direction our organization is going in.
Simmsinns - April 24, 2010
An argument can be made, if Lauvao ends up starting at guard next to Mack, that we are the best offensive line in football. Especially considering the last four games of last year. They are doubling down on that dominance.
gentryholdem - April 24, 2010
And will be for years and years and years to come.
gentryholdem - April 24, 2010
He doesn’t even to be dominate. Just solid Along side Mack and Thomas. Next year we pick up a young solid tackle and our line is set for a long time.
LiveandDiefortheDawgPound - April 24, 2010 via mobile
Not what we quite wanted or expected. But , that’s every draft in every city every year.
There’s a reason we’re not paid the big bucks. This is purely for our entertainment.
I’ll start by taking my hat off to H2M! It takes pros to get two other solid players prior to their favorite.
Joe Haden: The best and safest pick that could’ve been made under the circimstances. We now have a secondary that should be able to compete with any one in the division.
T.J. Ward: Don’t know much about him so I’ll remain alittle skeptical until we see him at game speed. Thought Major Wright or Reshad Jones may have been better options. But, if this kid comes on as advertised , no one will care much for comjng up the middle of the field on us.
Montario Hardesty: I’ve watched every game this kid played this year and I’ll tell y’all that Tennessee wins only 4 games tops without him! This kid’s a game changer and as about as humble as they come. Y’all gonna love him! We should now have a 2,000 total yard backfield with 80 or so receptions to boot.
Colt McCoy: Again , thought there was larger needs and better choices at other need positions but if the guru likes him and has this much faith in him, I digress! The kid’s a proven winner that played behind a mediocre line for three years running and still was in the trophy race all three years. And he’ll be learning the pro game from one of finest overachievers in the game of the last decade.
Shawn Luavao: The top rated off guard in the draft. This pick may have to be the most crucial of all the picks so far in my mind. H2M seems to have nailed it! We now should have the best OL in the division and maybe the conference!
With god’s grace over these kids and they all come to work as expected , we’ll be having fun in December again! We cannot base this draft only on the kids we got but also the moves H2M made prior to set them up for success. There’s a game plan and their sticking to it!
Man , it feels good to have some pro’s running the show again! Haven’t had this since maybe 1990. Rejoice and hold your breath Browns fans , got a feeling this is gonna be a real nice ride!
theotherJimBrown - April 24, 2010
Luavao wasn’t the top rated guard
The Licensed Pessimist - April 24, 2010
he was on many people’s boards, the top rated guard left.
bross09 - April 24, 2010
Iupati was the consensus top guard. I don’t know where you have been.
TheRealSlimShady - April 24, 2010
Bross said “left” meaning available at that particular pick.
Roger Dorn - April 24, 2010
no need for insults man, but seriously please read what I say.
yeah. I know Iupati was the best guard in the draft. however, Luavao was high on the list for most draft analysts of the best available guards LEFT.
bross09 - April 25, 2010
Being the best guard left in the third and the best guard are very different statements. Rocland was commenting on the latter, why inject the former?
danvail - April 27, 2010
just trying to counter negativity with positivity I guess.

Irrelevant information.
danvail - April 27, 2010

TheRealSlimShady - April 26, 2010
jerry was gone and I had Lauvao a bit higher than petrus. granted, a lot of teams mus have had lauvao lower b/c he lasted till the 5th.
bross09 - April 26, 2010
???
Did you mean something else?
TheRealSlimShady - April 26, 2010
yeah…I meant petrus…its not that hard to figure out…plus you can always google petrus and find out when he was drafted…but that requires thought and effort…and sometimes that is hard.
bross09 - April 26, 2010
Dude, don’t be a jerk. Just admit you screwed up; no reason to be rude to him because he was confused by your mistake.
Buckeye Brad - April 27, 2010

Kimble_79 - April 27, 2010
Just saying, you shouldn’t be critiquing me, when you yourself automatically calls Steeler fans rapists.
SpecialBrownie - April 27, 2010
I didn’t call anyone a rapist except for their players. I said you could chat about your players at “familywatchdog” I didn’t say he was anything. Maybe you should read that again.
Kimble_79 - April 28, 2010
Not trying to start anything with you, I’m just asking a question. You do tend to jump in head first anytime people are having a disagreement. And again, maybe there is a joke there I missed. But please make note that I did NOT call a Steeler fan a rapist. I was clearly talking about his players. Yeah, I probably shouldn’t have even wrote that. Regardless, not trying to start anything, I was just sayin you tend to do that quite a bit.
Kimble_79 - April 28, 2010
It’s who I am on here and I just try to add comedy to an otherwise dull situation. BB gets in many arguments due to his knowledge and mod position, why not add comedy to it? Also, it’s fun to take shots at Bross.
