Two more rumors related to the Cleveland Browns were just floated around. First, let's start with former Browns safety Brodney Pool. Pool was not one of the players to receive a tender from the Browns before Friday, so he became a free agent. According to Pro Football Talk, Pool might be scheduled to meet with the St. Louis Rams on Monday.
I didn't mind Pool as a player, but he never really reached the level of being an above average safety. With his history of concussions, I'm more than willing to address the safety position in the draft. The free agent pool has thinned out, with Antrel Rolle signing with the Giants and Kerry Rhodes being dealt to the Arizona Cardinals.
The other news is that RT Tony Pashos is on his way to visit with the Cleveland Browns, according to the National Football Post:
Veteran offensive tackle Tony Pashos is on his way to Cleveland to visit the Browns, a league source with knowledge of the situation confirmed tonight. Pashos completed a visit with the Washington Redskins, but no deal was completed and he's moving on to visit the Browns.
It's sort of surprising that we are getting the opportunity to meet with Pashos, because a few hours earlier there were reports that he had a done deal with the Redskins. Pashos, 29 years old, has started in 54 of his 69 career games. He played for the San Francisco 49ers last year but his season ended early after he broke his left shoulder blade.

I’m fine with losing Pool. I really don’t want to see a player die on the field.
gahnki - March 6, 2010
We need to be done with Pool.
johnnyphoenix - March 7, 2010
These are the kinds of splashes I want the Browns to make.
Don’t do a stupid splash and get the stuck up adults wet. Be smart; splash your sister.
That was a metaphor.
SpecialBrownie - March 6, 2010
I would like Pashos now that we have 0 Depth on the OL.
I would also like Pool because of zero depth in the secondary.
TheRealSlimShady - March 6, 2010
I liked Pool also, but I agree with gahnki, we don’t want to see the guy die on the field. He’ll probably not even know his own name when he gets another concusion. Shady’s also right, our secondary depth is getting close to “0”. I sure hope we get the holes filled with a couple FA’s & the Draft. So, it’s starting to look like the DB & OL getting the higher picks in this coming draft.
J. W. - March 6, 2010
I mean, we have two starters (if we keep Elam), and two nickel backs. Then an unproven guy in Coye.
TheRealSlimShady - March 6, 2010
We only have 2 servicable starters. That’s the problem, we need at least one great starter. We need to upgrade the DB’s 1st, the look at the OL.
J. W. - March 6, 2010
I think Wright can be great
TheRealSlimShady - March 7, 2010
right now Eric Wright is a pretty good #2 corner. We could use Eric Berry next year (yeah deep cover 1 guy) and a good man to man corner, those two things could make rob ryan a whole lot more aggressive on defense and change the way we play most teams.
jaws. - March 7, 2010
great?!?
johnnyphoenix - March 7, 2010
there are rumors about donte whitner not being kept in buffalo would anyone be interested in bringing him to cleveland? i know he is a local guy but he is also a former first rounder
scc2o4 - March 7, 2010
I’d be very interested. The Bills need a nose tackle for their new 3-4 scheme. Whitner + Pick(s) for Shaun Rodgers could work out well for everyone.
gahnki - March 7, 2010
To expand upon my post, it would fill the Browns need for a safety and add picks to this year’s draft. There are limited options at the nose position and the Bills may be induced to overpay.
gahnki - March 7, 2010
what about just offering draft picks for whitner? what round pick would you offer? if we acquired whitner would the browns still look at berry in the draft? and if you trade rogers do you look at a d lineman in the draft to take his place?
scc2o4 - March 7, 2010
kerry rhodes sets the market. Whitner hasn’t been as effective as Rhodes and rhodes was traded for a 4th and a 2011 7th. If the bills want to trade him the price is probably a 5th and next years 6 (conditional on stats or somthing maybe)
jaws. - March 7, 2010
I would give one of our fifth rd picks for whitner and I believe we have two sixth rd picks as well for whitner and then look at berry or haden in the first rd and a linebacker or runningback in the second
scc2o4 - March 7, 2010 via mobile
ok i love the idea of bringing in donte whitner, as long as it only costs a 4th round pick or lower. a 5th and 2011 sixth (conditional) would be a nice trade. Dude is a downhill run defender and if paired with a dynamic free safety (read: Eric Berry) whitner could add about 10 lbs this offeseason and be at his best. Plus hes only 24. Go get him.
jaws. - March 7, 2010
Not saying it’s a problem but would you prefer to do with Elam if we were to get Whitner and Berry? Trade? Back-up role?
Villeslgr - March 7, 2010
damn i can’t type today
“what would you prefer”
Villeslgr - March 7, 2010
Why not keep him we need 2 safeties
TheRealSlimShady - March 7, 2010
yes.
Dawg Nuts - March 7, 2010
I wouldn’t mind keeping him along with mike adams in a backup role. Like heckert said you can never have to many dbs. I also wouldn’t mind taking a look at the rams safety Atogwe, Oshiomogho if he is at the right price if we can’t get whitner
scc2o4 - March 7, 2010 via mobile
Elam is a borderline NFL starter quality player. The kind of guy who adds great depth to your roster and can contribute in different nickel and dime schemes and such but really is out of place starting. I wouldn’t mind keeping him and using him on special teams and other situations or to spell our starters. Brandon McDonald is the guy who needs shown the door.
jaws. - March 7, 2010
Elam is good enough to start but shouldn’t isn’t someone who will win you games or you build around. McDonald is fine as a nickel or dime guy.
TheRealSlimShady - March 7, 2010
What tender did Atogwe get?
TheRealSlimShady - March 7, 2010
I think he got the lowest tender. I don’t think signing him would even cost us a draft pick. And he was their franchise player last year.
scc2o4 - March 7, 2010 via mobile
Correct.
The Rams have the chance to match his contract, but would receive nothing if they decided to pass.
In other words, add in a poison pill and you can have him free and easy.
Bernie19Kosar - March 7, 2010
Is he a free agent you would throw a lot of money at? I sure would (not Rolle money but I would still give him a large contract.)
TheRealSlimShady - March 7, 2010
I’d rather bring Donte Witner here in trade (no other teams competing on bids) but Atogwe is a nice player.
jaws. - March 7, 2010
Atogwe is much better than Whitner.
Bernie19Kosar - March 7, 2010
I would be happy to have either but I think Whitner is more in line with the SS position.
Atogwe is better against the pass but Whitner is younger and more instinctive filling against the run.
jaws. - March 7, 2010
I would be very happy to have Atogwe. he is a 28 YO that makes plays all over the field.
If he played on a good team he would get much more recognition.
Bernie19Kosar - March 7, 2010
What kind of money would you pay him though? Top 5 Safety money?
TheRealSlimShady - March 7, 2010
Yes, because he is a top five safety.
Bernie19Kosar - March 7, 2010
Top3 or 2?
TheRealSlimShady - March 8, 2010
I would be cool with 5 years 25-30 million.
Locks him up until he is 32-33 and we get a safety that makes plays all over the field.
This being said, I haven’t heard a peep about Atogwe coming to Cleveland.
Atogwe is better than Rolle, just older.
Bernie19Kosar - March 8, 2010
Interesting idea there.
Wouldn’t hate that.
Bernie19Kosar - March 7, 2010
Love Pashos at the right price. Could be a really nice RT.
Bernie19Kosar - March 7, 2010
He is a classy guy
But I think he is a backup nothing more. In ‘09 training camp he was beaten out from his job by 2nd round selection rookie Eben Britton at my Jaguars.
San Fransisco didn’t want to resign him either …
But if he ends up in Cleveland I’m glad he got a shot. As I said he is a great person; good to have in the locker room.
Zoltan from Budapest - March 7, 2010
pashos is ryan tucker and Hank Fraley’s replacement i think. Veteran depth. I think the browns will add at least 2 offensive linemen in the draft this year, probably in the third and fourth rounds.
jaws. - March 7, 2010
I’m down with getting two in the draft.
Brownie's Year - March 7, 2010
So you´re actually safe with trading Brodney Pool, because he is a concussion liability?
mooncamping - March 7, 2010
Pool is a free agent.
Chris Pokorny - March 7, 2010 via mobile
Everyone is a concussion liability; Pool is a death by concussion liability.
gahnki - March 7, 2010
Wow, you´re painting a pretty nasty reality.
mooncamping - March 8, 2010
I am on my phone so I don’t have a link but Schefter is reporting that Pashos is a done deal. 3 years for 10 million.
I really like the signing. Won’t be surprised to see St Clair cut soon.
Bernie19Kosar - March 7, 2010 via mobile
Link
gahnki - March 7, 2010
we got somebody at least. Huzzah.
In all seriousness I’m glad the Browns brass has set its sights on shoring up the offensive line.
jaws. - March 7, 2010
He sounds like a decent tackle, any news about him? Is he an upgrade over St. Clair?
Skov17 - March 7, 2010
I think so but my opinion of St. Clair is pretty low.
Here is a quick scouting report I found:
Assets
Huge, physical blocker with a long wingspan. Aggressive, intense player who also makes good decisions. Gets a good pop and drive when run blocking. Plays with good leverage.
Flaws
Not a super athlete. Not quick out of his stance. Has slow feet, and footwork and technique needs refining.
Bernie19Kosar - March 7, 2010
Thanks Bro!!! Gotta love his size, and the mauler personality.
Skov17 - March 7, 2010
Clair is cheap, I think we should hold onto him just as a backup since he also has experience playing LT.
Roger Dorn - March 7, 2010
Just read that we acquired QB Tyler Palko?
Here near the bottom.
Brownie's Year - March 7, 2010
I did some looking and I can’t find anything where we acquired him. Maybe it is a Yahoo mistake.
Bernie19Kosar - March 7, 2010
Wikipedia says Chiefs.
Matt Y. - March 7, 2010
Yeah, I saw that the Cheifs got him on the 3rd.
Brownie's Year - March 7, 2010
I bet it’s a glitch in their system. Could be that Pashos is right after Palko in the list of free agents they have on their database, and be it human or technological error, it filled in the wrong one for the Browns team report.
rolub - March 7, 2010
This sounds right.
Bernie19Kosar - March 7, 2010
Just curious, does anyone know the exact difference between a 3-technique Dt and a 5-technique? And why is one better for a 3-4 then the other?
Skov17 - March 7, 2010
3 tech and 5 tech are just positions on the line. 3 tech is outside eye of a guard and 5 tech is outside eye of a tackle.
gahnki - March 7, 2010
Just think of the holes on the line (starting with the center/guard hole) as 1-3-5.
Brownie's Year - March 7, 2010
Thanks for the clarification guys.
Skov17 - March 7, 2010
So a 3-4 would be two 5-techs and a Nose tackle?
Skov17 - March 7, 2010
Yes, although they usually play the 4 tech spot (directly on the guards.)
gahnki - March 7, 2010
generally the 3-4 defense has one nose tackle (a 0 technique) who plays heads up on the center and two Defensive ends who play in the so-called 5 technique most often line up heads up on the offensive tackle or just shaded inside of him in the base 3-4 (two gap)
However the lineups vary based on numerous factors and over / under fronts and things like that. Rex and Rob Ryan often like to use the “Bear” front where you bring your DEs in to play 3-technique (inside number exactly aligned with the guards outside number)
jaws. - March 7, 2010
Great explanations, thanks again guys.
Skov17 - March 7, 2010
If you want some further info, Rufio did an awesome write up before the season.
