According to head coach Eric Mangini, he would like to announce the team's plans at starting quarterback when he meets with the media on Thursday. The reason for the delay is that he wants to evaluate how Colt McCoy does in Wednesday's practice. McCoy is expected to see some first team reps Wednesday, so unless something seriously goes wrong during practice, it sounds like the rookie is in line to reclaim the starting role at the Browns close out the season with three division games.
Mangini also mentioned that regardless of who starts at quarterback, Seneca Wallace would probably be the No. 2 quarterback due to the special offensive packages they have available for him. That doesn't mean they will use him more in my opinion, but rather that it's better to have the option of using him. If he was the inactive third quarterback, Cleveland loses that luxury.
Players missing Wednesday's practice include DL Shaun Rogers, LB Scott Fujita, LB David Bowens, and TE Evan Moore. The Browns made a transaction yesterday, promoting CB Coye Francies to the 53-man roster. To make room for Francies, the team waived CB Eric King.

It´s kind of sad Colt McCoy is culled back up for the cheap games of non contention. But what the heck. He needs to keep showing “how” he intends to play quarterback.
The other priority is maintaining the roster. Upon viewing it, I had to realize it´s pretty thick. Nary an incapable guy on it. You know what I think about the behemoth linebackers, but I know you consider them roadblocks other teams must run to, due to some kind of magical agreement. We need to shuffle it up with greater and greater talent.

The more experience/playing time he gets the better. (as long as he is absolutely 100% healthy).
Thaaaat’s what she said
johnnyphoenix - December 15, 2010
Games against Baltimore and Pittsburgh are hardly “cheap”. Especially when the last 3 games could determine Mangini’s fate.
Spidey - December 15, 2010 via mobile
People keep saying this about the last three games, and I have to say it again, I would hope that our PFO is smarter than to judge the fate of our HC on a whim like like 3 games at the end of a lost season.
North Coast Flea - December 16, 2010
No, he won’t be judged entirely on the last three games of the season, but those three games will be considered along with the rest of the season. Winning 2 of those 3 games makes the season look much different than losing all three.
After all, people made a big deal of the Browns winning their last 4 games under Mangini last season and used that as an indication that the team was headed in the right direction, so by the same logic wouldn’t losing the last 4 games of this season (if it were to happen) indicate that we might be headed in the wrong direction?
Buckeye Brad - December 16, 2010
Right, that’s the reality of the situation.
Western Reserve - December 16, 2010
This is true. 3 games have a big impact on the overall W-L record. 6-10 or 9-7, big difference.
rufio - December 16, 2010
Except we have 8 losses.
SpecialBrownie - December 16, 2010
I used that 3 game swing because it illustrated a difference between potentially being in the playoffs and having a winning record and having no shot at the playoffs and having a pretty poor record. Not because that was where we could end up.
Similar things could be said about 5-11 and 8-8 but I feel the perception difference is greater between 6-10 and 9-7.
rufio - December 18, 2010
That´s what I was saying above, why don´t we hang onto good people for a change.
mooncamping - December 16, 2010
Has there been any reports as to when Fujita is expected back. Our defense is really missing his presence it seems. Also to moon above…I REALLY hope we pick up a speedy, strong, OLB this offseason. I know that would make your day.
Kimble_79 - December 15, 2010
Fujita – not looking promising for this week
burntorangeandbrown - December 15, 2010
Thanks, we need him back ASAP
Kimble_79 - December 15, 2010
Ah, that’s depressing.
Simmsinns - December 15, 2010
sounds like a good chance next week againts the ravens, steelers……we will need all the help we can get AND eric wright out of the lineup to win those.
allsides - December 15, 2010
Yayyyy!
emily522 - December 15, 2010
Happy to see Francies back in the fold.
elsandito - December 15, 2010
“special” offensive packages
I can hardly wait.
johnnyphoenix - December 15, 2010
Sounds promising for Colt. Hurrah!
RelapsingDawgCatcher - December 15, 2010
Dude. Love the beard.
SpecialBrownie - December 15, 2010
Just cut Delhomme now.
Boomhauer - December 15, 2010
McCoy is back so long Delhomme
Kimble_79 - December 15, 2010
So long DENNAL PLAN!
Simmsinns - December 15, 2010
Do the Browns trade up to get a high draft pick like A.J. Green?
champion64 - December 15, 2010
Hell no. No. No. No.
We fired Savage years ago. We don’t do dumb stuff like that anymore.
SpecialBrownie - December 15, 2010
Good call
Roger Dorn - December 15, 2010
Absolutely not. We don’t trade up and we don’t reach for positions, we pick the best available player. Heckert is pretty damn good at this too!
Kimble_79 - December 15, 2010
Love that we have this guy drafting.
Simmsinns - December 15, 2010
See also LeSean McCoy.
TheDriveStillHurts - December 15, 2010
Indeed.
Simmsinns - December 15, 2010
While Phil Savage was with the baltimore ravens, they drafted Jonathan Ogden, Ray Lewis, Chris McAllister, Peter Boulware, Jamal Lewis, Todd Heap, Ed Reed and Terrell Suggs.
sww2109 - December 15, 2010
Was Phil Savage in charge of the draft?
TheDriveStillHurts - December 15, 2010
And your point is… that Heckert will now suck because Savage did? No?
Then what the heck is your point?
Simmsinns - December 15, 2010
Odgen and Lewis was the first Ravens draft. I do not believe Savage was with the team then. Ozzie draft I think.
Grockcubs - December 15, 2010
They were all Ozzie drafts, Savage just helped a little with some of them. Ozzie runs that whole shebang.
rufio - December 16, 2010
Savage was a scout not the GM.
North Coast Flea - December 16, 2010
I rec’ed the shit out of this, pardon my French
Roger Dorn - December 15, 2010
i just have to say that i love the fact that the first player listed above is the kicker. the freaking kicker.
“among his many player acquisition successes in cleveland, heckert brought in punter reggie hodges, drafted quarterback colt mccoy…”
DontCallMeJoey - December 16, 2010
Haha, nice. I hadn’t even noticed.
Simmsinns - December 16, 2010
I think Hodges was brought in under Mangini, but I think the fact that he got a legit shot here this year is a credit to both him and heckert. Hodges played in Philly early in his career, and played in NY during mangini’s time there.
bross09 - December 16, 2010
Trent Cole sucks and was a product of Johnson.
rufio - December 16, 2010
But I love Heckert.
rufio - December 16, 2010
I don’t see how you can say he was just a product of Johnson when he already has 9 sacks this year (5th year in a row with 8+ sacks). Yeah, McDermott is the successor…but can’t you say anyone who is successful is just a “product of the D” until they leave that D? Its very difficult to make the distinction until they leave that team. I guess I don’t buy into someone being a “system guy” or a “product of ____” when the guy has 51 sacks in the last 4-5 years (plus, 8 passes defended and 10 forced fumbles)
bross09 - December 16, 2010
He just isn’t pro-bowl level. Maybe “sucks” is a little harsh, I’m just bitter that announcers still thought he “beat” JT repeatedly when we last played them.
Still, to some extent the Eagles are very good at getting to the QB, and he just happens to be the beneficiary. You won’t see him straight dominate the best LTs in the league like a guy like Freeney.
rufio - December 16, 2010
thats fair. He definitely gets some boost by the system. I guess I did take a little bit of offense to saying he “sucks”. Maybe his numbers might not be as great in another system, but its hard to suck and get as many sacks as he does. I am of the belief that he would still be a very productive player in another system (still getting 8-9 sacks a year on average).
bross09 - December 16, 2010
I am not of that belief.
rufio - December 18, 2010
I’m hoping Heckert sees something in Julio Jones.
Simmsinns - December 15, 2010
Some see Jones as the 2nd best receiver in this draft and some still predict the Browns able to get Green.
SBP - December 15, 2010
I hope he doesn’t. We don’t need another half-motivated receiver who has a case of the dropsises.
jaws. - December 15, 2010
If that’s the case Heckert won’t take him. If Heckert thinks he is worth taking, than Julio Jones isn’t a half-motivated receiver who has a case of the dropsises. Personally, I’ve only read things about how hard Julio Jones works.
Simmsinns - December 15, 2010
How do you know he’s half-motivated?
Buckeye Brad - December 15, 2010
!?!
He’s playing with a broken hand and loves to pave the way for his RBs. Care to explain?
rufio - December 16, 2010
I love Julio Jones.
I know he’s got question marks, but the kid loves to play and he’s pretty damn good at Alabama.
rufio - December 16, 2010
I also think he will not fare well in the draft “preseason”, I don’t know if he will drop on every draft board, but I don’t think he will look as good in shorts.
rufio - December 16, 2010
I agree – I think Julio Jones is an excellent prospect.
I’ve seen him play a couple of times and he is impressive in just about every aspect.
I saw him drop one ball he should have caught in the Auburn game, but he does not have the ‘dropsies’ by any stretch as far as I can tell.
Jones is a great athlete, fast, very physical, great blocking WR and works his tail off from all accounts.
burntorangeandbrown - December 16, 2010
They are available….. Daboll does not know what they are, but they are available. Wait, we used one of those special packages in the Bills game… Yes that’s right the very effective Cyclone formation of Wallace handing it off to Hillis….. ONCE! Outstanding formation. We had the defense fooled at that one!
SBP - December 15, 2010
Let’s be fair… it was twice.
TKilbane - December 15, 2010
I stand corrected. Thank you.
SBP - December 15, 2010
My fingers are crossed SO HARD right now.
Adrock2099 - December 15, 2010
That reads surprisingly dirty.
Adrock2099 - December 15, 2010
Haha, now I read it like the raging clue guys from SP.

Simmsinns - December 16, 2010
C’mon dude, It’s the Hardy Boys.
Brownie's Year - December 16, 2010
Get well, Colt. I, and many others are more than tired of watching the barren, scorched Earth that is the twilight of Jake Delhomme’s career.
ouched - December 15, 2010
Delhomme is just what he was last year, a washed-out, indecisive interception-thrower. Colt needs these last games to prepare for next year, if he’s healthy.
Displaced Dawg - December 15, 2010
I’m so excited to see Colt back out there! Hopefully it will bring back the variety on offense that we’ve been lacking for a while. I also hope that this means we’re not as reliant on Hillis, because I really worry about overworking him to the point that he’s not as effective next season.
Legoman0721 - December 15, 2010 via mobile
how sad would it be if Colt played well enough for Daballs to keep his job?
discoinferno083 - December 15, 2010
Tom Brady himself may not be able to do this…
Browns town - December 16, 2010
Jake played horribly against Buffalo.
He stopped doing all of the things he had done well previously. I don’t think I have ever been so frustrated.
At this point, I am hoping Colt has done enough weekly M-Sat. to truly earn the starting job, and I hope we play him the rest of the way. I hope he stays healthy, I hope Holmgren and Heckert get a good look at him, and I hope he learns some things about pre-snap reads, the hard count, etc. from the veterans.
Good lord that Buffalo game was ugly. Credit to them for getting a W, but we looked BAD.
rufio - December 16, 2010
Colt needs to play. I need something to be excited about for this game.
Brownie's Year - December 16, 2010
I totally agree with Colt needing to play these last few games. Nothing would please me more than for him to drive the final stake into the bungles heart this Sunday.
I’m also glad we finally have a QB the city can be excited about.
GO BROWNS!!
WilliamL - December 16, 2010
McCoy has now officially been named the starter for the rest of the season.
