Gameball of the Week: Peyton Hillis, and the Need for a Backup RB

This post is sponsored by Sprint.

After the Browns' 34-14 victory over the Patriots, I don't think there is any doubt that running back Peyton Hillis deserves the game ball again. In all three Cleveland victories, he has been instrumental in closing out the game with punishing runs. More than any other game this season though, his impact was evident against the Patriots. He registered career highs across the board in carries (29), rushing yards (184), and touchdowns (2). He also added 3 catches for 36 yards.

He also helped the efficiency of rookie quarterback Colt McCoy, who completed 73.6% of his passes. Many of those completions came off of playaction. On NBC's Football Night in America on Sunday Night, analyst Tony Dungy showed a play in which linebacker Jared Mayo came up on a playaction. As soon as McCoy set, he was able to fire to Mayo's vacated coverage position, netting an easy 24-yard completion to tight end Ben Watson.

The Browns are a hot football team right now, but it looks more and more like the threat of Hillis must be present. In that case, that places extra emphasis on the most important postion the team is lacking right now: a good backup running back.

Star-divide

Before the bye week, Hillis was a little banged up. He seemed fine after carrying the load against New England, but when the Browns were up by 20, who cringed a little at still seeing Hillis in the game? Eventually, the team did end up giving the last couple of carries to fullback Lawrence Vickers, but it still stood out in my mind: would we be able to do anything without Hillis?

Earlier this year, for whatever reason, Jerome Harrison just didn't work out. He was shipped away, so we can't worry about him anymore. His replacement, Mike Bell, has not been productive any time he has come into the game to give Hillis a breather. That was seen in the first drive of the game against New England -- after two big plays, Bell was given the ball two times in a row. His first carry went for two yards, and his second carry went for one yard. In both instances, there appeared to be plenty of room to run but Bell couldn't capitalize. He finished the game with 6 carries for 7 yards, and ended up leaving with an injury.

The only other running back on the roster is Thomas Clayton, a player with no experience in regular season games. James Davis was waived a couple of weeks ago.

I think the Browns need to invite a couple of free agent running backs in, perhaps even former Brown Chris Jennings, for tryouts to offer a threat when Hillis isn't in the game. Right now, Bell isn't cutting it, and Hillis has proven to be too valuable. If the Browns keep playing as physical as they are, wouldn't it be great to have another back who can split some time with Hillis against lesser teams (i.e. Buffalo and Carolina), so that Hillis will still be near 100% when the Browns play three divisional games to finish off the season? What do you think?

Yes, yes, and yes! Imagine how our backfield could look had Hardesty not been injured. Thunder & Lightning? It’s a little early to say how Hardesty would have done though. Back to the point though, we absolutely need another back to give Hillis a breather. He may be fine, but we are really using him to the max right now. It would be nice if Bell would step up, but every time I see him in the game, I almost expect a 1-2yd run.

You know who could be had on the cheap? Cadillac Williams. Playing behind our line, he could do more than just spell Hillis against bad teams. Same with Ernest Graham. Either one would be better than any of the options available via FA. If we can pry one loose for a sixth or seventh rounder, I say go for it.

We can’t trade for anyone. The trade deadline is long past.

Holy shit. That was a category 5 brainfart.

Well understood amidst the improbability and afterglow of Browns´ wins over the Saints and Pats.

Cadillac and Graham are both done, much as it pains me to say it. I’m a big Bucs fan and have seen a lot of those guys.

i have an idea for a backup running back. his name is jerome harrison. dumb trade

Jerome Harrison wasn’t playing any better than Mike Bell.

This has been covered quite a bit in other topics but I don’t think Harrison was going to try anymore for the Browns. Drafting Hardesty and picking up Hillis made Harrison vulnerable to an attitude crisis. It came and he went. And he isn’t exactly tearing things up over with the Eagles. Only 2 carries for 6 yards.

Just a couple of names that could be thrown out there, in no particular order:

1. Ryan Moats – Former Eagle, a third round pick, who was with the organization during Heckert’s time.

2. Larry Johnson – Probably not worth the trouble attitude-wise and salary-cap wise, but he was ready to accept smaller roles in Cincy and Washington.

3. Jamal Lewis – Heh, funny that he is a “physical” back who is available. I’m not interested in him though, just mentioning his availability.

4. Justin Fargas – This one sounds compelling. I always thought he performed “well enough” for Oakland when they had a long stretch of being a bad football team. He has surgery in March, but was in Denver during camp. The Giants also worked him out a couple of weeks ago.

5. Aaron Stecker – He’s a veteran utility player who would offer a nice rush/pass combo. He was on the same team with Scott Fujita in New Orleans for a couple of years too. The Packers worked him out in early October.

Wouldn’t mind Fargas. I also checked all the practice squads, and it’s pretty slim pickings. I think Chris Henry on the Seahawks practice squad is one player that might be decent.

Is there an easy way to check everyone’s practice squads quickly?

I googled it. It had updated practice squads as of 11/2.

Link

If Steve Slaton would be moved to the practice squad for Texas, we should snag him up.

He has far surpassed his eligibility for a practice squad by virtue of the number of games he’s played in.

No on 2 and 3. I would not object to Moats, Fargas, and Stecker. they are the most useful IMO.

I think Stecker and Lewis have nothing left in the tank Physically so I would go after Fargas or Moats. Fargas may be better if he still has it, but he may not have it anymore either.

I remember Fargas running well when I bothered to look at Oakland, so I’d take him in a heartbeat. Don’t recall how he was on catching and blocking though.

Did anybody notice the Belicheck/Hillis sumit after the game?
Being sarcastic here, not more than 5/6 seconds at most but for Bill that’s kinda long after getting stomped on.

I can understand the very short coach to coach handshake but did you watch long enough to see Bill looking for & finding Hillis?
I’m pretty sure it was just a “Hey nice job kid, hell of a game” from Bill but it kinda looked more like it could have gone “Hey Peyton great game, how many years left on your contract”? " LOL
Peyton almost had that deer in headlights look while Bill spoke, would be interesting to hear what had been said.

Forgot where I read it, but Hillis said that Bill just told him he had a great game. Bill probably called McDaniels yesterday and gave him an earful for trading him . . . and trading him for Brady Quinn . . . and for giving us two draft picks as well. Ouch.

As much as I don’t care for Belichick, I think he respected how well Hillis played.

And unlike that asshat Ray Lewis, I think Belichick was paying his respect to Hillis for owning them.

They asked Peyton about it in the postgame press conference, he said that Bellicheat said “I am impressed by you” or something like that.

I think Jennings makes a lot sense.

Fargas is intriguing, as is Jennings. I still don’t understand the whole James Davis ordeal.

If all we needed in a back is one that can deliver a blow, we have Vickers. There’s more to it than that. Hillis has other qualities that separate him from other bruisers. And you aren’t going to find most of those qualities in backs that other teams would not also covet. So, Bell is as good a sub as can be had. I did like Jennings’ work when he was given pre season reps.

Chauncey Washington (USC) is a free agent. He spent most of this year on the Jets PS before being signed by the Rams and then cut a few weeks later. The Jets kept him over Danny Woodhead.

Just a thought

on when you said “a player with no experience in regular season games.” Hillis was once that guy. He wasn’t drafted in the 1st round or anything. Not that you can bank on a guy being a Peyton Hillis, but unknown guys can have talent.

Congratulations on the win. Your team outplayed us for 60 minutes and whooped our butts good.

Could you do us a favor and beat the Jets next week, too? Thanks.

We’ll do our best. Please take care of the Steelers in kind

Sounds like a deal. We beat the Jets and you beat the Steelers. Where do we sign?

You all should just draft Bilal Powell

Do you ever say anything that is not ridiculously lame anymore? I have no problem with you continuing to come here, but if all you add are silly comments asking whether we shaved last week — or this one — you should go hang out at the Notre Dame board or with the Broncos and Panthers. Thanks.

This is honestly a kind of serioius suggestion. He is a good running back. I don’t think I’m hurting anybody by saying that.

I’ve got Hillis and Hardesty. Drafting a RB should be the last priority.

I’m not sure we can count on Hardesty for anything right now. I certainly wouldn’t mind picking a RB in the 4th round or so next year.

Again, last priority. If we’ve addressed all our other needs by the 4th round, than maybe…

I’m not sure why it’s our last priority. Right now we have one good RB. We need more than that, and Hardesty is a big question mark.

Personally, I think we have much more pressing needs elsewhere.

Agree to disagree on that.

I think if we start to develop a consistent offense outside of Hillis then the RB position is less of a issue, but just based on where we stand now I think we really need to get some viable depth there.

Hardesty has proven nothing and has a scary injury history. I’m not saying you guys should draft one early, but a mid/late round pick isn’t a bad idea.

Powell would most likely be a late round pick. Maybe the conditional from the Quinn trade.

You think Powell will last through two drafts huh?

I thought the conditional was 2011? Chit, got me again.

Browns get Denver’s 6th round pick in this years (2011) draft.

We don’t have a 7th this season because of the Seneca Wallace trade.

the problem is

a) it didn’t come off as 100% serious

b) many of your comments here in the last month haven’t been really serious in nature.

I thought he was serious. I know TRSS lives near Louisville and Powell plays there so it seemed a logical comment for him to make.

I was mostly serious. I was kind of just throwing it out there though.

But I seriously think he could be a big sleeper for someone. He runs similar to Arian Foster.

Its clear multiple people here didn’t (I thought it came off as not serious)

Is there anything really that wrong with #2? It’s not like I’ve been trolling outside of maybe one comment.

its not that there is nothing wrong with B (I am assuming #2 means B). However it makes people more inclined to think that you aren’t going to be serious. I guess you could call it the “boy who cried wolf syndrome”.

Point is: if you want to be truly taken seriously by everyone, making non-serious remarks as a habit isn’t a good way of establishing that integrity to be taken seriously.

Well no one was a big fan of the sarcasm font…

Use /sarc.

exactly. the sarcasm font is annoying and in a lot of places, the use of sarcasm was stupid and/or unnecessary.

Ok this is my last use

*/sarc to the sarc font

thank you…

and that was just an example of when it was unnecessary…plus, I don’t think everyone understood the concept of it.

/sarc is much better

Powell doesn’t play for Notre Dame.

I heard Maurice Clarett is available.

Chris Jennings is in the UFL or something I believe, and probably couldn’t get out of his contract.

Before we faced the Steelers a few weeks ago, I know he said he would love to come back to the Browns. Did he sign with the UFL since then?

jdudas posted this in the post-game thread

Chris Jennings is now playing for the Hartford UFL squad, coached by none other than Chris Palmer. I’m not sure about this, but I think that the UFL has been refusing to allow players out of their contracts to go to the NFL.

Mike Bell does look horrid. What is his long run like 3 yards? I am for giving Clayton a shot. We obviously prefer him to Jennings – so let us see what he has got.

He just runs straight at the line. it’s weird.

Bell or Clayton?

Bell’s stats are pretty bad right now: 13 carries for 7 yards. That’s about a foot and a half a carry. Harrison has only carried twice for the Eagles for 6 yards… a better average but not all that exciting either. I don’t think either will be a starter or feature anytime soon. I’m sure the front office is anxiously searching the practice squads and watching the waiver wire. We need a viable backup in case of injury to Hillis.

Funniest thing I’ve heard all week. Mike Terrico yelling “LOOK OUTTTT!!!!”

I don’t know if anyone else is watching MNF, but Pouncey cannot block Demetko Peko. At all.

I have been watching because I wanted to see what the fuss was about.

Maybe he is having a bad game, but he is getting owned.

WHAT???? HE’S THE BEST CENTER EVER APPARENTLY.

I am legitimately shocked. Like extremely.

And now he’s injured. Haha.

I don’t wish injury on people. Not cool.

Eh, he’s fine now. I was more laughing at the fact that this game has shown how this kid should not be on the pedestal he’s been put on, not that he got injured.

I am not. however this is not surprising.

I don’t remember how he did against Tuba and Rogers, but there were some questions coming out how he can handle the big DTs/NTs. Supposedly he just got destroyed by Ngata.

Even though Peko isn’t a NT, he is huge for a DT. He is listed at 320 and may be even bigger. He is bigger than some NTs.

The guy is like Jeff Faine. the problem with him when we drafted him was that he wasn’t good at blocking the NTs and from what I heard, thats why we shipped him out.

The MNF crew just spent five whole minutes apologizing for James Harrison. I was sickened.

Markice Pouncey (sp?) just hobbled off the field favoring his right side.

I dislike T.O. but I like good endzone celebrations. His mime rendition was very nice.

In other news, everyone is now starting to realize Palmer blows hard.

Finally.

Totaly OT, but I just got accepted to the University of Toledo. Combined w/the browns win, I have had an amazing week!

Get ready for the SUUUUCK BUS!

Wow, way to betray KSU. But congrats nonetheless.

SB, I live less then a mile from campus, why would I want to go to a place less then a mile from my house.

Free food, free board. Super short commute. Commuter’s tuition. Ability to have a job. Ability to have your car in your driveway all the time and not thrown into a huge room and board parking lot.

What do you think I’m doing?

Sounds nice. I forgot Commuters also get slightly less tution at some schools. Its the same thing I am doing with Tri-C.

Its a B***h to park on campus there, then again its a B***h to park on any college campus and THAT is the advantage.

The trick is to get early classes. You may bitch waking up early, but it’s always nice to have the first parking spot in the commuter lot everyday.

Online courses = win. I only go to class 1 day a week, but I’m taking 9 credit hours.

EDIT: 10 credit hours.

Scheduling two days ahead of every other sophomore and being a semester ahead=win. I go Tues- Thurs and I still have 15 credit hours.

I had to go 5 days a week my freshmen year… and hated it. I was there by 7 am and didn’t leave until 10:30 pm. It was freaking awful. I also missed the first half of MNF throughout 2009.

Since then I have not over loaded my credit hours, and I really don’t care at all if it takes me longer.

Same. I got started early in High school so I pace myself at an average of 15 per semester. I’ll still get out a semester early, so booyah!

I go to 2 classes a week, 2 days a week and I have 14 credits. Baller!

Then again, I had to go to a 3 hour class once a week, but that was an 8 weeker. now, I just have my 2 hybrid classes and my one online class.

thats true. I can never wake up early. Even then, it goes without saying that the parking situation on a campus sucks…unless you go to a small private school. I have been trying to decide which state school I eventually want to go to and have used college prowler and all the big state schools have bad parking situations

Laundry.

Oh and no goddamn obnoxious roommate who brings his white trash back with him everynight and keeps you up.

well for me it wasn’t white trash…but long Island Guidettes

case just made all laundry free. I live off campus, but that doesn’t stop me from taking advantage.

That’s sweet.

I love free laundry. I had it last year and now I am home again and have free laundry.

Congrats! What are you going for?

Political science is my major, pre-law as my pre-professional program, and maybe jounalism as my minor.

Wow, nice. Congratulations and good luck!

Thanks!

Wait, James Davis was WAIVED???

When did this happen, and where did he go? I kept expecting him to make an entrance yesterday but figured he was inactive.

Bout two weeks ago and I don’t think anyone has signed him.

Redskins practice squad.

Hahahaha, Domatah (sp?) just totally schooled Troy Polymolou (sp?)!

We need a gif

Jeff Reed is a fat ass.

Janikowski is still the fattest kicker alive.

He’s allowed to be because he has a freaking monster foot. May lack the accuracy, but he has the strongest leg in the NFL.

yeah. imo, it’s a shame if he doesn’t retire holding the nfl record for longest field goal. that guy can freaking kick the football.

Hey, read above. We need a .gif made my friend.

If I’m guessing his method correctly, he’ll need it to be in highlights somewhere first.

Good point. Unless he has his tv hooked up through his tower. That’d be convenient.

TV tuner card, you can buy those on Newegg.

If you’re actually interested, check them out here.

If you saw my comment, I do not need one. Already have satellite tv through my tower.

Yeah, I posted this just before I saw it.

Right. I have a dish receiver in my home tower.

While I hate the Steelers, I want the Bengals to lose so we can officially not be in the cellar of the AFC North.

Boooooo! F*** Pittsburgh! I’d only ever want them to win if it meant us getting a wildcard spot in the playoffs.

Yeah, I’d rather see the Steelers lose.

Well, since the didn’t lose… no reason we can’t celebrate being a better team than the Bengals! Because we totally are!

Woooooooo!

It is a GREAT week to be a Browns fan :)

I wonder if they’ve considered this over in The Jungle… Being behind “the lowly Browns”… Gotta be a humbling experience.

On an ironic note: It takes awesome fans to celebrate being in 3rd place :p
BUT, I called this at the beginning of the year and I’m sticking to it: At the end of the year, we’ll be celebrating being ahead of the Steelers in the division. Lord, haste the day.

Here’s the video Davus. It’s cammed but it should be good enough for a .gif.

Highlight of the night right there.

look at all that hair flying around

Believe it or not, I saw some power rankings that put the bungles in front of us. More proof that all writers hate the Browns.

More proof that all writers hate the Browns.

Cue BB in 5, 4, 3….

Don’t hold out on us. Give us some links.

More proof that all writers hate the Browns

Ugh. Florio at PFT had us ranked way high (probably too high, ahead of a ton of teams with better records) — he must hate us as well? I am sure only a biased writer would not put us in the top 10.

Damn straight. Glad you agree!

Wow. Proof that these power rankings mean absolutely nothing. I love our team, but c’mon now.

Wow I thought he was Browns hater. Good to see some respect. Let’s hope we can live up to it and even move up.

this was a joke right?

Sigh.

Best comment without commenting, and starting a fifty comment argument,,, ever!

Floyd Womack. He played right tackle when the Browns won games last year, and he was back at tackle for the past two games. Should he just stay at right tackle?

This is an interesting point.

Yates has impressed me as well. Pork Chop has been our best RT in awhile.

The was rock solid yesterday, I was quite surprised.

Absolutely, we dominated the right side yesterday (as well as the left)

Absolutely, we dominated the right side yesterday (as well as the left)

Maurice Clarett has seemed to get his shit together, maybe he would be an asset. You cannot deny his game day motivation- the guy played hard all the time.

No. No thank you. Never for me please. I coached here in Trumbull County when he went to High School and he was a snot head then, and he only got worse. I can’t imagine prison, or any amount of counseling has changed his stripes. His 15 minutes are over and done.

He’s a 3rd string running back in the UFL. No thanks.

he also doesn’t run a sub-5 40 anymore.

not unless there’s a box of donuts at the 41 yard mark

I know there was some talk that Mangini was trying hard not to smile after the win… But you guys should head over to clevelandbrowns.com and watch the ATT Locker Room Report. It shows some footage in the locker room after the game… Mangini looked pretty giddy in the locker room. It was nice :)

I saw that too

I think it’s funny how in 3 weeks, most fans I know have changed their Mangina tune to Mangenius. Winning does a number on your reputation. It was kind of neat to see the players award the coach with the game ball.
