DBN Picks Contest -- Week 9

I'm pretty satisfied with my first week of picks, finishing with a record of 9-4.  The winner for the week was BrutalMovement at 11-2 with two others at 10-3, so I'm fourth right now (tied with emily).  Since this is all just for fun I'm just going to let everyone keep track of their own scores, so feel free to post your record from last week along with your picks this week.  And if you didn't make any picks this week then you can start this week.

You can also use this thread to discuss any of the other NFL games this weekend.  I would say the two biggest games are Chiefs-Raiders and Bucs-Falcons, which nobody could have predicted before the season.

Star-divide

New England Patriots (6-1) at Cleveland Browns (2-5)

The Browns are coming off of their big upset of the Saints and hopefully well-rested after the bye.  Colt McCoy will be starting again and he gets another tough test against the team with the best record in the NFL.  I think the Browns can keep it close but we just don't have the weapons to keep up with their offense.  Let's say 27-16 New England.

PICK:  Patriots

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-2) at Atlanta Falcons (5-2)

The surprising Bucs think they're the best team in the NFC but they have yet to beat a team with a winning record.  A win in Atlanta would be huge, but I don't see that happening.  In case you hadn't noticed, though, Josh Freeman is pretty good.

PICK:  Falcons

Miami Dolphins (4-3) at Baltimore Ravens (5-2)

Miami tries to stay perfect on the road in Baltimore.  The Dolphins are an underrated team but I don't think they can beat the Ravens coming off their bye at home.

PICK:  Ravens

Chicago Bears (4-3) at Buffalo Bills (0-7) in Toronto

The NFL travels out of the country again this weekend, but this time it's only a short drive to Toronto.  The Bills have lost close games against good teams the past two weeks so I see them getting their first victory in Canada.  And if that happens, Lovie Smith will be feeling the heat in Chicago next week.

PICK:  Bills

New Orleans Saints (5-3) at Carolina Panthers (1-6)

This one won't be close.

PICK:  Saints

New York Jets (5-2) at Detroit Lions (2-5)

The Jets are coming off a bad 9-0 loss to the Packers and the Lions are getting pressure on the QB led by Suh so this may be a trendy upset pick.  But I see the Jets getting the running game going to keep the pressure off Sanchez and their defense shutting down the Lions, so I think the Jets leave Detroit with a win.

PICK:  Jets

San Diego Chargers (3-5) at Houston Texans (4-3)

San Diego is 0-4 on the road so far this year facing a Houston team on a short week of rest after losing to the Colts Monday night.  This is the time when the Chargers usually begin their second-half surge to win the AFC West, but Houston needs this win to keep up with Indy and Tennessee in the South.  This is a very tough game to call and I could see it going either way, but I'll take Houston at home.

PICK:  Texans

Arizona Cardinals (3-4) at Minnesota Vikings (2-5)

The Moss-less Vikings host an Arizona team who have also been struggling this season.  The Cardinals are going back to Derek Anderson at QB after Max Hall has been ineffective, so that's enough for me to give this win to the Vikings.  Just give Peterson the ball 25 times.

PICK:  Vikings

New York Giants (5-2) at Seattle Seahawks (4-3)

Many people are saying that the Giants may be the best team in the NFC right now, but they are going to a tough place to play in Seattle.  The surprising Seahawks lead the NFC West and are 3-0 at home, but they'll be without Matt Hasselback so Charlie Whitehurst is starting his first game at QB against a very tough Giants defense.  If Hasselback was playing I might pick the upset, but I've got to go with the Giants here.

PICK:  Giants

Indianapolis Colts (5-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (4-3)

This could be another very interesting game, with Michael Vick coming back to start for the Eagles against a Colts team who have won three in a row (all of them coming against good teams).  Manning and the Colts keep scoring points no matter who is on the field, and I don't see them letting down against Philly.  This should be a high scoring game, but I'll take Indy.

PICK:  Colts

Kansas City Chiefs (5-2) at Oakland Raiders (4-4)

Who would have thought that Chiefs-Raiders game in November would be one of the best games of the day?  Both of these surprising teams are fighting for the lead in the AFC West and they need to keep winning to hold of the Chargers who usually surge late in the season.  Oakland has been dominating the past two weeks so I don't see how I can pick against them at home.  Expect to see a lot of running in this game, since these two teams are ranked first and second in rushing yards this season.

PICK:  Raiders

Dallas Cowboys (1-6) at Green Bay Packers (5-3)

Dallas seems to have given up on the season while the Packers are fighting to stay on top of their division, so I don't see any reason to pick the Cowboys to win.

PICK:  Packers

Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2) at Cincinnati Bengals (2-5)

What a crappy game for Monday night.  The Bengals were expected to be much better than this but are on a 4-game losing streak and now tied with the Browns in the basement of the AFC North.  The Steelers want to get revenge from last year's loss in Cincy and are coming off a loss to the Saints, so they'll be taking out frustration on the Bengals.  Unless Carson Palmer starts throwing better I don't think this will be close.

PICK:  Steelers

Anyone else think the Chiefs are like the Broncos last season?

Not with their remaining schedule. I think they win at least five more games.

Most likely this. They’ll have a very rude awakening in the first round of the playoffs though.

and for my flyer pick: Our own Cleveland Browns

I just realized I put down AD, instead if SD. I picked the chargers, and had a perfect week. Thank you Brownies!

I’ll give you credit for that. Obviously you weren’t picking Houston, so you’re 13-0. Congrats!

The deadline is 12:00 right? So just in time.

5-7 last week.

Actually I was 6-7.

8-4 so far this week, so 14-11 total.

Final: 9-4, 15-11.

It looks like I’m 7-4 going in to the Sunday night game. Thankfully I got a few OT games to go my way (Raiders, Jets, Vikings) or else my record would be terrible. I missed the Browns, Chargers, Bears, and Eagles.

Just a suggestion, a link somewhere in the article to the previous weeks’ so people can check their record a bit faster.

Good idea. Thanks.

I finished the week 9-4 again, same record as last week. That puts me at 18-8 so far.
