The Cleveland Browns might have been on the bye in Week 8, but that didn't prevent them from gaining ground on the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North. Sure, being three games behind as opposed to three and a half games behind isn't something to get overly giddy about, but seeing the rest of the AFC North teams fall in defeat was the best thing the Browns could have hoped for during their time off.
After beating the Cincinnati Bengals earlier in the season too, check out where the Browns now rank in the AFC North (pictured right). The Browns have been a better football team this year than the Bengals, so it's good to see it pay off in the standings.
Since there isn't a Browns game to review this week, here are some notes and nuggets I have from Week 8 around the NFL:

- Overall, I thought the quality of many of the NFL games on Sunday was pretty low. Maybe it was just due to the games shown on local television here in Cleveland; every time I flipped the channel, receivers were dropping wide open passes, teams couldn't convert third-and-short rushing situations, timeouts were being burned unnecessarily, etc. I was particularly disappointed in the Jets' receivers dropping so many passes, and it wasn't even Braylon Edwards' fault.
- I started Jon Kitna over Tom Brady in my fantasy league this week because I felt the Cowboys would be in a shootout with the Jaguars. I didn't get to see the Cowboys game live, so when I kept seeing the interceptions pile up for Kitna after seemingly being able to move the ball well enough, I was surprised -- Kitna isn't "great," but I don't think of him as being careless with the football. Upon seeing the highlights of the game, I saw the receivers hang him out to dry with dropped passes that then deflected into the arms of a defender. Kitna's poor statistical day didn't hurt me out too bad fantasy wise -- he only had one less point that Brady would've gotten me.
- Speaking of fantasy football, I need Neil Rackers to score more than four points this week. If he does, I'll end my losing streak and pick up a much-needed win. I'll be kicking myself if he gets shutout or something, because I dropped Garrett Hartley heading into this week, and he would've already secured the win for me.
- I don't remember the last time I've seen (or rather heard about) sheer dominance in the NFL like I have the past two weeks with the Oakland Raiders. They destroyed the Denver Broncos two weeks ago 59-14. They did the same thing to the Seattle Seahawks 33-3 on Sunday. Neither of those opponents are great football teams, but in a league that is full of upsets these days, you don't see any football teams just dominate games the way they have. Is this a sign of things to come for Oakland? If I'm CBS, I'd put Oakland vs. Kansas City as my featured game next week. I bet they won't though.
- I still like seeing Derek Anderson play, but Cardinals fans are 100% starting to experience what Cleveland fans had to deal with. He had the Cardinals in position to at least tie the game against Tampa Bay on Sunday, and then fired a pass into triple coverage that got picked off. After the interception, he threw his hands on top of his head like he did so often here.
- Holy crap. As I'm writing this article, it says that the Minnesota Vikings just waived Randy Moss.
- When Mike Shanahan pulled Donovan McNabb for Rex Grossman, I think it was a terrible decision because Grossman is a turnover machine and not the type of guy who is going to spark that team suddenly. Now, when McNabb was in Philadelphia, I did always notice that the Eagles always did a horrible job in the two minute offense in terms of managing the clock. I never knew whether to blame that on Andy Reid or McNabb. Nonetheless, you can't pull McNabb in that situation -- this is a veteran quarterback who is trying to lead a decent Washington team to the playoffs.
- The Saints struggled in the first half much like they did to the Browns, but they seemed to get things together in the second half, much to the delight of Cleveland fans. The bigger key was the fact that their defense, which has been playing well, finally started forcing turnovers.
- I'm going to have a hard time dissecting the New England Patriots this week. Much like the past, they don't have a flashy or "dominant" looking team on paper, but the guys they have always combine together for a well-executed gameplan. Right now, they have the best record in the AFC. Tom Brady is getting more time to throw the football, and they are finding a little bit more success on the ground. I think their defense can be broken down with a physical running back. I think this is a really compelling matchup this week, even when you don't figure in the whole Mangini vs. Belichick storyline.
- Buffalo keeps playing hard and Ryan Fitzpatrick is much better than Trent Edwards ever was. I hope they pick up a victory before they face Cleveland though -- I'm always weary of facing desperate teams who fight hard.
- Don't you hate inconsistent football teams? That's what defines teams like the Jaguars and the Seahawks, particularly the Jaguars. How can you have such drastic hot and cold performances? I can't explain it.
- Is it going to be a recurring trend each week that Vince Young plays, gets hurt, and then has to be replaced by Kerry Collins?
- I know the Browns' fake punt run by Reggie Hodges went for 68 yards last week, but it's pretty odd for the Jets to fake a punt in a 4th-and-18 situation, backed up as far as they were, when you have a defense that is excellent. It backfired, as they didn't convert and Green Bay managed a field goal.
- I'm happy to hear that Troy Smith picked up the win in London for the 49ers and played fairly well, even if he did connect on a lucky Hail Mary heave at one point. Despite the 49ers' poor record and how the Rams have played better than expected, Mike Singletary is right -- his team still has a great shot at winning the NFC West. As it stands right now, his team should have the best chance at getting back on track and seizing the division.
- Brett Favre remains tough as nails. Was there really ever any doubt that his streak would end? I thought he managed the game pretty well in the first half with shorter throws that were along the types he made last year.
- How about the Saints and the Patriots coming up with goal line stands? Those stands are the difference between those teams winning this weekend.
- Tonight, I like the Colts to beat the Texans, even without Dallas Clark and Austin Collie. Why? Because they still have Peyton Manning. It's almost like you could plug in a guy off the street in that offense at receiver and have them look great with Manning.
Rex Grossman, my god. I was in disbelief yesterday when I saw this and then confirmed that Donovan was not injured.
Shanahan must be going senile.
Monsters of the Midway - November 1, 2010
Jon Kitna… really? Over Tom Brady… yikes.
As much as I hate Bill, he’s freaking brilliant sometimes. He got Moss off the books just in time and a free third round pick?
As for Moss… the guy just doesn’t care at all. I don’t know where he’ll end up, but I really hope no team is stupid enough to claim him, unless it’s the Steelers or Ravens, or Cinci, that would be awesome.
I’m going the other way, I think Houston wins again. Colts still can’t stop the run and their taking on the back that is capable of torching them… again. Even if they sell out to stop the run (not that it would matter with the Colts) but you have Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson to account for.
Simmsinns - November 1, 2010
Yes, you can imagine how stupid I felt after each pick piled on for Kitna. I feared I was going to then watch Brady tear it up for 30+ fantasy points. It’s the first time I’ve ever made such a drastic move like that at the QB position when it wasn’t a bye. My projections for the week were that Jacksonville would be terrible defensively on the road, Kitna would freely air it out and watch his receivers make plays after the catch since the ground game is gone, and New England would continue putting rushing touchdowns on the board in the red zone vs. passing touchdowns. Most of that worked out, except I didn’t expect Dallas’ receivers to drop the ball and result in picks at least 2-3 times.
At least Brady vs. Cleveland is an easier decision this week :p
Chris Pokorny - November 1, 2010
Classic case of overthinking. I once started Hasselbeck over Brees — it made a lot of sense at the time in my overanalytical mind. Didn’t pay off.
TheDriveStillHurts - November 1, 2010
Ok, you were right. Manning is a god. The Colts still can’t stop the run though.
Simmsinns - November 1, 2010
Those Cardinal jersey’s are pretty sick.
notthatnoise - November 1, 2010
I agree, they look cool. They remind me of Atlanta’s jersey’s though.
Chris Pokorny - November 1, 2010
I was too bothered by the fact that they were Cardinals wearing black. I’ve always associated that bird with red and I don’t think they had any red anywhere on their uniforms. But I suppose the color was fitting given that DA was bound to lead them to a period of mourning.
JustBob - November 1, 2010
This is hilariously awesome.
Simmsinns - November 1, 2010
I like how he’s such a tech-snob that he makes 720p HD sound like the snowy black and white TV I used to tune in to Saturday a.m. cartoons with as a kid.
On another note, parity. The NFL’s got it, MLB and the NBA don’t.
Monsters of the Midway - November 1, 2010
This sounds familiar. I think the nature of football creates a better situation for parity over the NBA. With having to field two separate units of players in a game and a one win elimination playoff format. Baseball on the other hand, I don’t think they care about parity it just wants it’s traditions.
Villeslgr - November 1, 2010
I really prefer 720p over 1080i for football. The interlacing leads to blocky-ness sometimes. Still, there is really no point to complaining that you HD isn’t quite H enough.

The Browns ARE THIRD AND NOT FOURTH.
SpecialBrownie - November 1, 2010

SpecialBrownie - November 1, 2010
According to the official waiver wire release (and Jay Glazer), the move wasn’t made today. I’m guessing Childress is arguing with his bosses (including Brett Favre) over it.
Michael Jay - November 1, 2010
Ha! To me, the stuff with Farve the last season and a half makes Childress look really bad. E.g., Who really runs that team? What kind of a coach lets a man who can’t decide if he wants to play football be the starting QB? And not show up at training camp?
9James - November 1, 2010
Brad Childress is a joke.
He is a complete moron that should be fired. Watch how fast that team will quit on him.
Bernie19Kosar - November 1, 2010
almost as fast as the cowboys quit on wade phillips.
notthatnoise - November 1, 2010

SpecialBrownie - November 1, 2010

Simmsinns - November 1, 2010
Mangini has become amazing with all his coach speak. He’s made it seem like he can do no wrong by playing either Wallace or McCoy, and honestly, I no longer care who we play. I think we can win either way, and if Mangini feels one gives us a better chance than the other, so be it.
Go Browns.
StuckInPa - November 1, 2010
I’ll respect his decision for sure, understanding that he’s a better football decision maker than I’ll ever be, but I still think that McCoy is the no-brain-er and I don’t think this should be a “qb-controversy” at all.
Simmsinns - November 2, 2010
Agreed.
emily522 - November 2, 2010
Its rough though because you dont want colt to throw 4 picks because the patriots have the LOLICHICK mojo. Bill must be cheating still because he turns so many mediocre players out of nowhere into stars. Its like Jimmy Johnson in nascar: he just defies explanation.
jaws. - November 2, 2010
Nascar? Did you just use a reference to Nascar? I’m not sure… But I think I can speak for a majority of us here when I say… What the hell does that even mean? :)
shep615 - November 2, 2010
You do not speak for me.
Kevin Harvick is gonna win it this year!
SpecialBrownie - November 2, 2010
what is this nas-car you speak of?
Dawg Nuts - November 3, 2010
I couldn’t believe DA threw that pick into 8 Cardinal defenders. Seriously, at some point in time don’t you stop yourself and say “OK, I’ve lost 2 starting jobs because I make inexplicably horrible decisions at times” and do something to fix the problem? It is totally under his control.
New England is very good at stopping the run, but I don’t know if I have seen a team really try to wear them down over 4 quarters. Their rookie CB McCourty is very good for a rookie. Cunningham, the rookie OLB, is also solid. I don’t expect him to give JT problems, but he’s looked good in a few games that I’ve seen.
rufio - November 2, 2010
I think DA completely lacks the ability to throw to anyone but his first read. I’m sure he goes through his progressions, but if the play call is a slant to Larry Fitzgerald, he’ll glance at Steve Breaston & Early Doucet, then throw to Larry no matter what the coverage on him (or whoever the first option is).
We hardly saw him tossing picks when throwing to guys like Steve Heiden. Always the first read.
And speaking of people quitting on teams, could you blame Fitz right now? First you trade the guy that opened everything up for him (Boldin) and give him these crappy options at QB?
I bet Fitz is a Viking sooner rather than later (next season maybe). He grew up there and would love nothing more than to play for the home team.
Michael Jay - November 2, 2010
Yes, I can blame Fitz if he really is quitting on his team. You never quit.
rufio - November 2, 2010
Is Fitz really giving up on his team? I honestly don’t know. I haven’t heard anything from the media about him being a problem because he wants out. Certainly not to the extent we’ve seen with many actual problem-child WRs.
Simmsinns - November 2, 2010
I think Fitz is allowed to though. They ruined him.
SpecialBrownie - November 2, 2010
They are hurting his stats for 2 seasons, it’s not like all of his skill disappeared.
Simmsinns - November 2, 2010
Exactly.
SpecialBrownie - November 2, 2010
This.
Sorry, but I hate this whole “quitting on the team” thing and how some people (not specifically referring to you Michael Jay) act like it’s acceptable. These people are athletes playing a sport for a living while making millions. I get it, it’s still work to be a professional athlete, but you know what happens at a normal job when you quit or slack off? You get fired. It’s just irritating.
Rant over.
emily522 - November 2, 2010

BrownDawg1409 - November 2, 2010
For the record, I don’t think MJ is saying Fitz has quit on his team and I haven’t heard that anywhere either. I think he was just asking if you could blame Fitz if he were to quit.
Villeslgr - November 2, 2010
In which case I’d say yes, you can still blame him. Fans, the only real reason they get their paycheck, expect players at least to try.
EvenEspecially great players on bad teams.Simmsinns - November 3, 2010
Same answer.
rufio - November 3, 2010
Yeah I figured you would have the same answer, it just seemed that some of the comments were made as if Fitz had actually done the deed. This goes to simmsinns above as well. I would have the same answer if Fitz quit on his team, I just was thinking it would be best not to start a big thread over a rumor that’s not even a rumor yet.
Villeslgr - November 3, 2010
I like your fantasy football anecdote. fun fact: this week i had forte and cutler and peyton hillis on bye and my backup is alex smith so i had to start RB Mike Hart and QB josh Freeman straight off of free agency about 10 minutes after the 1:00 PM kickoffs. Lucky for me most of my players were playing at 4 or later. Still won my game against a solid team.
jaws. - November 2, 2010
After 7, Lets go 9&0
At least The Browns don’t stink like last year at this time. They’ve played every team they’ve faced tough and have outplayed a few in a couple losses. Do we still have like 11 linebackers on the squad? I’m hoping “The Colt” starts at home against the Pats & Jets. I like Seneca Wallace but " The Colt" looks like the real deal.
Thumpin96 - November 2, 2010
Enjoy fantasy football even when you lose. I am working out of Mexico City and soccer is on 24/7. Now, I am not a soccer hater, but with soccer in every time zone on earth it is overbearing. So I am watching a thrilling 0-0 match where the most exciting thing that happened is a failed corner kick, and they show an advertisement for fantasy soccer. Can you effing imagine that? Having to say – my team is hot we are 1-0-7 and have a lock on first place! Or how bout, my team is in a slump, I have not got a fantasy goal in the last 3 weeks. So even when in a bad week, relish the fact that your team scores every week and there usually is a time when you have a chance to win.

Hey Chris
Here’s a news flash for you DA is no longer a part of the Cleveland Browns, there is absolutely no way he can either hurt or help this team any more, get over it. This crap of you insisting on pointing out how DA is failing his new team is not only old but also very childish. Grow up!!
Steve n NC - November 2, 2010
I, for one, appreciate a good Derek Anderson FAIL recap. Especially during a bye week.
golanbatrac - November 2, 2010
Why? are you so naive to believe that DA was the only reason the Browns sucked in 08 and most of 09. Would you be saying the same thing if it was Quinn instead of DA, oh wait, Quinn hasn’t even been good enough to even see the field this year!
Steve n NC - November 2, 2010
Uh, no.
He is saying he enjoys hearing how DA is still bad, especially after his comments on the way out of town. It isn’t like there is any Browns news, it’s the bye week. It is of interest to some of us to hear how our former players are doing.
rufio - November 2, 2010
we aren’t arguing Quinn vs. DA. Both sucked and this argument is irrelevant. what is relevant is the fact that DA’s play was the biggest variable from ’07 to ’08. now that he is on a team with elite WRs (so the argument that his weapons suck is irrelevant) and a coach who knows how to call a passing game, he still sucks.
bross09 - November 2, 2010
You must be new.
Roger Dorn - November 2, 2010
new to what, the forum or the Browns, I’ve been a Browns fan since the mid 60’s and I may make a comment every blue moon or so but I read it pretty much every day.
Steve n NC - November 2, 2010
you don’t read the comments much then. most of us are firmly of the opinion that Quinn sucks pretty badly and may be out of the league soon.
no one ever said DA was the only reason the browns sucked those years, but having a QB who couldn’t complete half of his passes sure didn’t make things easier.
notthatnoise - November 2, 2010
There’s nothing wrong with covering recently former Browns. And Chris’ approach was not at all childish, he’s just being honest.
Simmsinns - November 2, 2010
So why not comment on other former Browns players
Steve n NC - November 2, 2010
We comment on Edwards all the time (check fanshots). We’d probably comment on Quinn if he wasn’t behind Tim freakin’ Tebow on that depth chart, wait.. I just did.
Simmsinns - November 2, 2010
Thanks for the comment on Quinn, however it would have been more scathing if there was a photo of him standing on the side line with his helmet in his hand looking over Tebow’s shoulder!
Steve n NC - November 2, 2010
You’re whining because of the picture he chose?
Oh yeah, Chris is the one who needs to grow up.
SpecialBrownie - November 2, 2010
Whoa chief. You should take all this into context for a moment. We like to cover all former browns players quite often actually. DA is of particular significance due to his comments on the way out. Are you having a bad day or something and are incapable of a joke or what? Lighten up man.
Kimble_79 - November 3, 2010
Hm, Brady isn’t playing, we say crap about Edwards all the time, DA sucks and we point it out objectively when it happens, Davis is doing crap in Buffalo so there’s nothing to speak of there. Every other former Brown is probably a backup, so…
SpecialBrownie - November 2, 2010
Why are you so defensive about DA?
rufio - November 2, 2010

BrownDawg1409 - November 4, 2010

SpecialBrownie - November 4, 2010
hahahahaha! I found this hilarious!
Kimble_79 - November 4, 2010
chill dude. just because he isn’t on the team anymore, doesn’t mean that we can’t still say that he sucks.
davus - November 2, 2010
There’s nothing wrong with saying a player still sucks, but when the focus seems to be on only one player, to me that just doesn’t seem to be right.
To be perfectly honest I could really give a rip what people think or say about DA or any other former Brown for that matter, interseting comments though!!!
Steve n NC - November 2, 2010
Then shut the f*ck up about it.
SpecialBrownie - November 2, 2010

BrownDawg1409 - November 2, 2010

notthatnoise - November 2, 2010
In my comments, I’ve always openly admitted that I root for Anderson to do well, but of course he looks no different than he did in Cleveland. I do cover him more than other Browns, but quarterback is such an important position on the field that when he plays, I see nothing wrong with pointing out how he performed.
Chris Pokorny - November 2, 2010
I don’t see the problem either.
Bernie19Kosar - November 2, 2010
Don’t get me wrong, I have absolutely no problem with the photo or anything else you might say about DA and to be perfectly honest with you I too root for DA to do well and it still ticks me off when he makes those bone headed mistakes like that last throw against the Bucks. I meant no ill will towards you and being a Browns fan I’m sure you have pretty thick skin and my comment to you probably didn’t go very deep but it seems to have touched a nerve in some folks. I do enjoy stirring the pot sometimes…
I think you’re doing a great job with this forum, keep up the good work!
