Transactions: LB Leon Williams Waived, Two Additions to Roster

The Cleveland Browns made several transactions Tuesday, releasing two players and signing two players to fill their spots.
Players Released
- LB Leon Williams: Phil Savage now has two fourth-round linebackers that didn't end up amounting to much in Williams and Beau Bell. When Williams, a "veteran", was inactive in Week 1 instead of rookies Kaluka Maiava and David Veikune, it was a sign of things to come. Looking back, you wish the Browns could've kept Bret Lockett over Williams.
- DB DeAngelo Smith: Here's another player who ended up being of no use to the Browns. We hardly knew you, Mr. Smith.
Players Signed
- WR/S Ray Ventrone: Ventrone has been in the league since 2005, having ties to two teams. If you guessed that those teams would be the Patriots and the Jets, then you are correct. Ventrone is primarily a safety, but the Patriots worked him out as a backup receiver last year in the preseason. Ventrone is mainly a contributor on special teams.
- OT Billy Yates: We now have another veteran offensive lineman in Yates, who has been in the league since 2003. He spent his first year with the Miami Dolphins, but played for the Patriots from 2004-2008. Yates ended up starting a few games during his span with New England, filling in for injured players.
ventron is interesting to me. Hopefully he can be valuable for us.

as a cowboys fan,,,,
you guys are looking good, keep your heads up. your defence and st are looking real good, but my opinion is anderson has a huge gun and it will open up the run, but brady does play a little more ball control……i think you guys are headed for big things, maybe not this year but they have play-makers……

Thank you. You are one of the nicer cowboy fans I’ve seen.

I like the Yates signing. Maybe we can cut Fraley now
BradyQuinnisBeast - September 16, 2009
Why would we cut a guy, Fraley, that anchored the Philadelphia Eagles, in their most successful time, 2002-2004 to include three NFC championship appearances and one Super Bowl game. In his final year there, 2005, when he was lost to injury after eight games, they went 6-10 (total coincidence?). I say he keeps starting at guard until we can draft a better one in next years first round.
Mack is also a guard, so what we really need is a real center. But I might as well be telling that to a wall. How Mack was determined to be a better center than Unger and Wood is still a big mystery to me. If it turns out we aptly drafted him at center, knowing he´s a ProBowl caliber guard, kudos to someone. But until that twist of reality is unraveled, good luck.

I thought you sent in your resignation post a few weeks ago? Quit pulling Farve’s!
SpecialBrownie - September 17, 2009
Nicely done.

Montana used to be pretty good too. Why not sign him
BradyQuinnisBeast - September 17, 2009
I’m guessing we’ll see Ventron just on ST and Yates is just there to plug into holes created by injury, yes?
JustBob - September 16, 2009
Any word on Hadnot?
rufio - September 17, 2009
Is every team in the NFL now obligated, to take Patriots discards along for the ride, if they intend to win?
mooncamping - September 17, 2009
By the way here is the difference between guard and center proportions.
The ideal center has short legs and a long strong torso,

like for example:
Eric Steinbach
the ideal guard is evenly proportioned and a little bit fat in the gut and but areas,

such as:
Alex Mack
By the way he won the Morris trophy twice, which is awarded to the best college offensive lineman or defensive lineman, and not the Rimington trophy, awarded to the best center in the nation.
The differentiation in proportions suited to a certain position is of course a matter of choice, and subject to discussion.
Like I said, I think we have a ProBowl caliber guard, in Alex Mack. I hope he isn´t made to fail, because of the insistance he has to be a center.

Just Maybe
the coaching staff that does Football for living has an idea what to do. Just saying.
Grockcubs - September 17, 2009
If you told us WHY the ideal guard has such and such proportions and the center has such and such proportions then maybe we have some discussion.
skipkirk - September 17, 2009
I notice from your photos that the center is also MUCH, MUCH taller (and wider) than the guard. Is that part of the ideal proportions also?
drjeo - September 17, 2009
So the kid that has played center at a very high level in college can’t play center in the NFL because his torso isn’t long enough and his butt is too big?
Also, are you claiming to know exactly what % of the volume of Alex Mack’s hindquarters is muscle and what % is fat?
rufio - September 17, 2009
There are some doors man was never meant to open. I’m putting Mack’s butt on that list.
JustBob - September 17, 2009
That kid can play, but his team will lose.
mooncamping - September 18, 2009
Because his butt is too big? Can you explain why he’s not a natural center? Why does his butt and short torso affect what you think his position should be?

Physiognomy is to faces as mooncampology is to offensive linemen?
rufio - September 18, 2009
Holy Buhjezus, I’m changing my major!
SpecialBrownie - September 24, 2009
See that picture of Mack? There is a ball between his legs. The guy played center in college for 4 years. He was pretty good too. Just quit mooncamping, again, just quit.
Ryan Kelsey - September 18, 2009
do we know if eric steinbach, in 6 years, has ever taken a pro snap at center?
DontCallMeJoey - September 18, 2009
I don’t think he has. He has played some OT, though (which is where he fits better based on his ability, regardless of his proportions).
rufio - September 18, 2009
(*where he fits better if he can’t play guard for some reason.)
rufio - September 18, 2009
Since when did Mack pull a Lance Armstrong? Ha!
…Too Much?
SpecialBrownie - September 24, 2009
You have never said a single thing on this website that makes any sense at all. Not one thing.
