The Cleveland Browns have signed their first 2009 draft pick. According to Pro Football Talk, sixth-round running back and Clemson product James Davis has agreed to a four-year deal worth $1.85 million, including a signing bonus of $99,250. This should be a sign that more of our draft picks will be signing on the dotted line soon, with training camp just three weeks away.
You can find out more about what type of player Davis is by checking out our 2009 Training Camp Preview for the running back position, where Davis' chances of making the 53-man roster and/or the practice squad are discussed.

Hopefully this means something good…

i really think this guy is going to produce. good potential, i think he fell because of a drop off from the 2007 season; but i think part of that was injury related. he should be better than jason wright immediately.

I thought his drop-off was due to the O-line in front of him graduating and being replaced by some less-polished guys. Again, just something I recall reading somewhere.

Clemson’s O-line was atrocious last year. Easily one of the worst in the nation.

If this kid can play, that’s an awesome contract.

Until he decides that he’s playing better than his contract is paying. How resistant is this regime likely to be to reworking contracts like this down the road if the situation warrants?

If he turns out to be our feature back, I think he could get a raise as long as he went about it the right way. Those are pretty long odds for a 6th round pick, though. If he’s only a decent back then we can probably replace him later without much of a problem.

I can’t wait to see this kid in August! I have high hopes.
