The Browns signed former Buffalo Bills LB Blake Costanzo yesterday after waiving DB Bryan Williams a few days ago. Costanzo spent his first year in the league trying out with the New York Jets and Eric Mangini before catching on with Buffalo. Last year with the Bills, he led the team with 26 special teams tackles. The Bills waived him on June 11. On May 18, when our Bills blogger did an early roster projection for the team, he listed Costanza as a player to be cut. Here's what fans had to say about Costanzo then, and after the release...
"I really have no issue with any of this, with the lone exception being Blake Costanzo’s departure. The guy is a demon on special teams and I would hate to see him go. Not saying it won’t happen, just that he is the only guy on your cut list that I would really miss."
"Entirely agree on Costanzo. I know that a few of our LB’s will be cut before the start of the year, but I really hope that ne makes it on the final roster. He’s a beast."
"Kinda surprised by the early release of Costanzo, especially since the team seems to value special teams play. As was pointed out though, it was most likely inevitable w/ the influx of young talent at the LB position."
The Cleveland Scene has a pretty funny article about Browns QB Derek Anderson visiting Kiddie Park and declaring it "Derek Anderson Day" to oppose Brady Quinn's "Brady Quinn Day" at Cedar Point.
"We were just having a normal weekend," said manger Steven Wright. "There were about two dozen families here playing on the mini-slides and mini-roller coasters, then suddenly this really tall guy shows up in full football uniform. We were on the verge of calling the cops until we realized it was really Derek Anderson. None of us even knew what he looked like until today."
Have a little chuckle at it.
As Bernie19Kosar pointed out, ProFootballTalk, a website recently acquired by NBC, reported a rumor of a Brandon Marshall deal occurring between the Browns and the Broncos. The deal would send Joshua Cribbs and a draft pick to Denver in exchange for Marshall. While the trade would seem to upgrade our receiving group, would it be a necessary one? I don't think so. Cribbs can be a game-changer -- you can't find those gems. We've already invested two high draft picks in Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi.
Cornwell [one of Stallworth's attorny representatives] said Stallworth has been working out to assure he'll be physically ready to go when cleared to return to the field.
"Yesterday at dinner he was complaining that his hamstring was too tight because he was out running hills with Frank Gore, Fred Taylor and Plax [Plaxico Burress]. So he's been working out," Cornwell said.
For those of you considering the possibility of him returning this year, the italicized part says it all. There's a reason fans didn't want him back prior to his unfortunate accident, and it's pretty funny to hear it almost bragged about. "I'm working so hard, I pulled my hamstring AGAIN! Put me in, coach!"

Trading away Josh Cribbs and a draft pick for Brandon Marshall would be a BIG mistake in my opinion!
- Not only that, but we still have Braylon Edwards! I think, after last season, he has a lot of room for improvement and we could see him bounce back into an elite WR once again.
One last note: Brandon Marshall often has off the field issues. ESPN’s Outside the Lines did an entire report on these issues. The report didn’t seem to be very sympathetic toward Marshall. He allegedly had several physical altercations with his ex-girlfriend over their long relationship. These kinds of characteristics don’t seem to meet what Mangini looks for in a player.
Simmsinns - June 17, 2009
Not necessarily disagreeing with you, but Braylon is a free agent after this season. It is not a given that he will be with the team next year
Brandon’s off-field questions are certainly a concern
Roger Dorn - June 17, 2009
It’s a given if the Browns want it to be. They can Franchise him, right?
kwoog - June 17, 2009
Yes
Roger Dorn - June 17, 2009
i could see robiskie or massaquoi helping in the return game if they don’t show an ability to make an immediate impact on offense…
BLAZER_FAN_199 - June 17, 2009
I don’t think Robiskie could be a return man in the NFL.
rufio - June 17, 2009
indeed, Robiskie is a guy who is going to make his name on running precise routes and having sticky fingers. The anti-Braylon.
Les Fleurs Du Mal - June 18, 2009
A healthy Brandon Marshall is sooo much better than Joshua Cribbs and draft pick.
Brandon Marshall is one of the five best WR’s in the NFL and would give the Browns a great WR duo.
Bernie19Kosar - June 17, 2009
Are we supposed to ignore the fact that he beat up his girlfriend, pretend it never happened like the Denver organization, leading to allowing it to happen several more times while he was signed with them. Even after they were made aware of it, repeatedly. Watch this clip.
Ignoring the off-field issues leads to more off-field issues.
Simmsinns - June 17, 2009
First of all, I detest people who abuse women. I think it is the lowest act a man can commit.
But I do think that Brandon Marshall has a beef with the OTL report. ESPN excluded a lot of info that in some cases could clear Marshall. I do not believe that Marshall is perfect and has some problems that need to be addressed. But when some media outlets only hear one side and declare it as truth, it can prove to be a sticky situation. (Duke Lacrosse, anyone?) It wouldn’t be the first time that ESPN has had an agenda.
Mike Florio (I know a lot here don’t like him, but he gets a lot more right than he does wrong) points out that Watley wrote a letter to Roger Godell amongst many other things;
Once again, I do not think that Brandon Marshall is a choir boy, but I do think that he should be allowed to tell his side of the Watley issue before he is proven guilty.
Fact is Brandon Marshall makes the Browns a better team.
Bernie19Kosar - June 17, 2009
The fact that Rasheedah Watley often defended her abuser while still in the relationship is a very well documented phenomenon. You can read more about it here.
Simmsinns - June 17, 2009
I’m not here to defend Marshall. All I am saying is that Watley has a lot of holes in her story, and I’m not willing to hang Marshall. ESPN has had agendas for stories before.
Bernie19Kosar - June 18, 2009
Yeah, but in this sitation she was NOT still in the relationship.
It’s probably still not uncommon for an abusee to defend the abuser even when the relationship is over, though.
I still don’t think all the facts are out here. Unfortunately, once all the facts are out any chance of getting Marshall might be gone. I still don’t think Denver can afford to trade him.
rufio - June 18, 2009
never underestimate the stupidity of mcdaniels.
BradyQuinnisBeast - June 18, 2009
I wish I could rec this comment 30 times.
Bernie19Kosar - June 18, 2009
I’ll second the rec so that BQB doesn’t need to ask for it again
Roger Dorn - June 18, 2009
The beggar…
Bernie19Kosar - June 18, 2009
I only did that once and I’m done doing that, but thanks for the recs.
BradyQuinnisBeast - June 18, 2009
Haha, I am just messing with you. If you ever want to be subtle about getting your post green, feel free to rec yourself.
(I have not attempted this yet)
Roger Dorn - June 18, 2009
You cant rec yourself
BradyQuinnisBeast - June 18, 2009
you are right. i am pretty sure you used to be able to. they must have fixed that glitch
Roger Dorn - June 18, 2009
Malor it, create a new username, and then rec yourself.
rufio - June 19, 2009
But really, McDaniels will be worse than Crennel because at least Romeo didnt trade away our franchise guy, but then again we never had a real franchise guy before Romeo.
BradyQuinnisBeast - June 18, 2009
You win.
rufio - June 19, 2009
What is Brady Quinn Day?
BradyQuinnisBeast - June 17, 2009
Sundays!
Bernie19Kosar - June 17, 2009
Better yet. Everyday!
tjk_doc - June 18, 2009
Who would return Kickoffs if Cribbs was gone?
BradyQuinnisBeast - June 17, 2009
rex hadnot?
DontCallMeJoey - June 17, 2009
shaun rogers and pork chop. They’d switch it up.
tjk_doc - June 17, 2009
rogers can play wherever he wants as far as i’m concerned after seeing this…
BLAZER_FAN_199 - June 17, 2009
I think were gonna draft Terrence Cody to return kicks
BradyQuinnisBeast - June 17, 2009
That would be awesome. That guy is a monster.
tjk_doc - June 22, 2009
In all seriousness, I’m pretty sure Syndric Steptoe would be returning kicks for us if we lost Cribbs somehow. He showed a lot of potential for that in the 2008 pre-season games, then again he was primarily returning against opposing second-string special teams.
One of our rookies might turn out to be quite a returner as well, you never know.
Simmsinns - June 17, 2009
I wish we wouldnt have cut Bryan Williams. He was good at kick returning
BradyQuinnisBeast - June 17, 2009
In all seriousnes, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t.
kwoog - June 17, 2009
Any reason you feel that way? I’m just curious.
By the way, the only reason I said that I was being serious was because a couple people were joking about Hadnot and Rogers returning kicks.
Simmsinns - June 17, 2009
Right, wasn’t trying to be snarky, but I guess it came off that way. The reason I feel that way is because I don’t think Steptoe will be on this roster, under any circumstance. Perhaps that’s hope.
kwoog - June 17, 2009
We should convert him to RB
BradyQuinnisBeast - June 17, 2009
Seriously.
BradyQuinnisBeast - June 17, 2009
I tend to agree, and I am really not all that encouraged by Steptoe having a couple good returns last year in the second half of a few preseason games. From what I saw in the regular season with Cribbs hurt, he was not good
Roger Dorn - June 17, 2009
I’d think Harrison could fill that role. He can quickly establish himself as the new Leon.
Not that Leon, but this Leon.
rolub - June 17, 2009
Thats a good idea. I think Steptoe might be worth looking into as well. Just please, please keep him out of the recieving rotation I beg of you.
tjk_doc - June 17, 2009
By the way, I love Leon.
Bernie19Kosar - June 17, 2009
Guys who I think could potentially do it:
Brandon McDonald
Eric Wright
Jerome Harrison
James Davis
Stallworth-pending league/team clearance
Paul Hubbard
I think Wright, Harrison and Stallworth would be the best return men out of that group. Stallworth is a mess right now. I’d be worried about losing Wright to injury, but slightly less worried than in the past because of Rod Hood, Ivy, and Poteat. I’d be worried about losing Harrison to injury, too.
If Cribbs was gone, Hubbard might have a better shot at making the roster if he can return kickoffs. He’s huge and fast. I have no clue how good he would be at fielding the ball.
rufio - June 17, 2009
if harrison and davis are both options, whoever finishes lower on the depth chart should be switched to that role and work intensively on it. i’d see it being davis.
better yet, let’s not be foolish enough to trade cribbs…
Dawg Nuts - June 17, 2009
Corey Ivy has limited experience returning kicks. Very limited.
Bernie19Kosar - June 17, 2009
I don’t want him doing it for us.
rufio - June 17, 2009
Kick returners are easier to find then WR’s who go for 100+ catches and 1,300 yards.
Bernie19Kosar - June 17, 2009
yes, and what are we giving up by losing a kickoff returner. 2-3 TDs and at most 5 yds/kickoff, compared to what you gain from a guy who could score 10 TDs and gain 1000 yards at least
Roger Dorn - June 17, 2009
wait a second...
anyone else notice that we signed yet another player with ties to the jets…i hope i’m not the only one here who isn’t a cleveland jets fan
BLAZER_FAN_199 - June 17, 2009
I have no idea what the obsession is w/ this “Cleveland Jets” angle… It’s meaningless. Of course he’s going to want some of “his guys”, but by the same token they’re all depth/cheap players, they’re not difference makers.
The 2008 Jets were deeper than the 2008 Browns. I’m fine w/ raiding their role players.
kwoog - June 17, 2009
Eric Barton is good
BradyQuinnisBeast - June 17, 2009
Better than Andra Davis, but he was relatively cheap too.
kwoog’s point (I think) is that we aren’t sacrificing much to pick up former Jets, we are just raiding the clearance bin for their non-star players.
If the choice is special teams player X who knows and is comfortable with Mangini and might be able to help smooth the transition here, is cheap, and won’t play much anyway – OR – special teams player Y who was already on the team, is cheap, and won’t play much anyway, there’s no reason not to grab player Y.
Its not like we traded for Mangold, Kris Jenkins, Calvin Pace, and Darrelle Revis.
rufio - June 17, 2009
I agree completely
Roger Dorn - June 17, 2009
i don’t see one player mangini and kotknus(sp) brought over from NYJ that aren’t better backups/roleplayers than what we would have had otherwise.
Dawg Nuts - June 17, 2009
This, especially the last sentence (I almost wrote something verbatim).
kwoog - June 17, 2009
i don’t understand your point. are you concerned that these former jets will have allegiances to the jets over the browns? they won’t try as hard b/c they’ve never played for cleveland before? maybe they aren’t good b/c they’re former jets?
what you’re missing is that having players who understand a coach’s rhythms and habits and, most importantly, system smooths the transition to that new system for everyone. who knows a new coach better than anyone? his former players.
get over it.
DontCallMeJoey - June 17, 2009
Really pumped about the last season of Lost.
They should have condensed things so that this past season was the last one, but I’ll take it.
Is that blog you linked to worth reading? Convince me I should spend some time there rather than here ;)
rufio - June 17, 2009
I also love Lost. Thought the season 5 finale was great
Roger Dorn - June 17, 2009
One of my favorites, too. It’s been especially good since they abandoned all the stories of the “Others” and focused more on the core group. They’ve set it up to have a boffo final season. (Am I the only person who uses the word ‘boffo’ any more? Just wondering.)
drjeo - June 17, 2009
Don’t know what boffo means.
I think we disagree a bit as well because my favorite season was S3 which focused a lot on the others
Roger Dorn - June 17, 2009
Definition search yields: Boffo = Extremely successful; great.
With the way Season 5 ended, I don’t think the people at ABC should show ANY new footage in promo packages this year (when December/January arrive). The biggest cliffhanger is where everyone ends up after the closing screen; if I catch a preview where the Losties are in the jungle (thereby spoiling it), I’ll be kind of ticked. I hope they stick with recycled footage with a background voice saying “what will happen next?”
Chris Pokorny - June 17, 2009
I might write someone at ABC, Lost, etc to suggest this
Roger Dorn - June 17, 2009
Also, with S1 and S2 DVDs out on Blu Ray now, I have the first 4 seasons at my disposal
Roger Dorn - June 17, 2009
The blogs have been OK, but are not the greatest. Have you ever checked out Lostpedia.com in general? During LOST season, I am on there sometimes hours each day. There are better recappers after episodes though, like Ryan from ZapitTv and some of the guys at DarkUFO.
Chris Pokorny - June 17, 2009
I have checked out some of the lostpedia stuff, but mostly a long time ago when they were writing books by fake authors and had the commercials for fake companies with websites where you could go to get “clues”.
A lot of it was over my head, and I tend to just watch the episodes to relax, not getting too worked up over all of the potential clues and that sort of thing.
I did hear something about an early cancellation plan the writers had where they taped a chimpanzee “talking” and “explaining the secrets of the island”. I am very interested in that.
rufio - June 17, 2009
I don’t like reading forums on Lost, it gets very tiresome and can ruin some of the surprise. A lot of the fun is figuring out something on your own. I have a kickass theory on what will happen in season 6 that I basically came up with on my own after watching the season 5 finale. I feel pretty confident about it
Roger Dorn - June 17, 2009
Stalled Worth
his hamstring woes should come as no surprise, especially to Fantasy football owners who have owned him in the past like myself. The man is the walking injured. When those hamstrings go, the season follows for Dante.
