Browns: Quotes and Nuggets - 8/25

It's always fun to see what Sports Illustrated's Peter King has to say about the Cleveland Browns, right? He had four bullet points dedicated to us, but unfortunately only one of them was positive:

g. Brady Quinn: six series, six points. Not a good first NFL start.

h. The Browns, all 75 of them left in camp, need to Google "sense of urgency.''

i. Except maybe Shaun Rogers. He stuffed Detroit's running game throughout the first quarter. Not that he was out for any kind of revenge or anything like that.

o. If you think Terrell Owens and Tony Romo aren't drooling at the thought of playing that Cleveland secondary Sept. 7, you're nuts.

-Peter King, MMQB

You really can't debate any of those points. As an optimist, I'd like to believe that we can bend and not break too bad against Owens. For me to have some confidence though, we'll need to make sure both of our starting safeties are back in the lineup. Still, it looks as though we're set to see a quarterback shootout on opening day.

Also, a reminder that the first roster cuts are due in by Tuesday, August 26th, at 4:00 PM. That doesn't mean teams can't start the process early though -- in fact, several teams have already made their cuts as of this posting. Those cuts can be seen here.

If the Browns announce their cuts today, I'll try to have the headline up as soon as possible.

Also, the Rams, perhaps in desperation mode, have brought in free agent center LeCharles Bentley to take a physical. If he goes to the Rams, he won't be facing us this year unless we miraculously meet in the Super Bowl.

I just am surprised that King puts that much into the preseason when a good number of our best players weren’t even playing.

LeCharles Bentley

Watch the Rams sign him to a huge deal and then get hurt. Currently watching Charlie Frye on TV for the Seahawks.

Browns Tickets for the fan who needs odd #’s of tickets!

Pete King is an asshole. Seriously. The only things he ever talks about are Starbucks, Favre, Romo, Starbucks, Favre and Starbucks. Then he talks a little more about Brett Favre.

Peter King is a no talent fraud. I wouldn’t read into anything that guy has to say. I’d be surprised if he could name more than five Browns.

I have to run a poll on this soon and see the results, because historically on this site (and other message boards), the love / hate for Peter King seems to be close to even, but particularly strong on the hate side. I’m on the side who likes King, because I feel he tries to be as objective as possible to all 32 NFL teams.

At least he doesn’t talk about Favre more than John Madden does ;)

If you do a poll, one of the options should read “Likes reading him, but thinks he says some incredibly stupid things”

Good point; sort of like “Enjoys reading, but understands what they’re getting into”.

Everyone in the media talks about Favre, it’s not just Peter King. And, yeah, he writes a lot about Starbucks and other non-football topics, but I just skip those parts of his articles. I think it’s really hard to complain about the topic of someone’s writing when you’re reading it for free. If you don’t want to read it, nobody is forcing you and you’re not paying for it.

I would disagree strongly with the assessment that he cannot name more than five Browns. He talks about all the teams in the NFL, not just the “big” teams like the Cowboys and Patriots. He visited Berea earlier this month and wrote a nice article about the Browns team, and I’m sure he could name most of the players. Considering the amount of words he writes each year about the NFL and the number of people he talks to, I would bet he could name about 80% of the players on every team. And that’s a hell of a lot of players.

He writes about Favre, Romo, the Patriots, and other overhyped topics because that is what most people want to hear about (sadly). His last MMQB was mostly about Seattle and how they’re the most unknown good team in the league. I’m not saying he’s perfect (I’ve mentioned before that he should stay away from talking baseball because he sounds like an idiot) but I learn a lot about the league reading his articles.

Here is the link to King’s training camp report of the Browns. I counted him naming 18 Browns players. Of course, he probably forgot most of them while he was dreaming about Brett Favre drinking Starbucks coffee in a crowded airport.

I don’t know, what King said is sadly true. Yeah its only preaseason, blah, blah blah.
But that is his observation, and so far the Browns suck.
